REPORT :
In the Premier 1 Elimination Semi-final at Woy Woy Oval, Hornsby defeated Avoca Beach by 16 points to 6. In a match that was an arm wrestle from start to finish, the match developed into a war of attrition for large parts of the contest. After a quite even opening few minutes it was Avoca Beach who opened the scoring in the 18th minute of play with a penalty goal. It did take almost a quarter of the match before these points were scored so this alone shows the evenness of the first half. Play went from end of the field to the other with neither team able to post points. Hornsby were soon to square up the scoring when they kicked a penalty goal to make the score 3 all. It was proving to be a physical clash and great defence was the order of the day. The final 10 minutes of the first half saw Hornsby kick two further penalty goals so they went to the halftime break leading by 9 points to 3. It was still very much anyone’s match. Both teams hade several good players, but Avoca Beach’s centre Mitch Jacob, flanker Brad Sheridan and prop Jake McPhie were leading from the front. Hornsby was being best served by flanker Tevita Piukala, halfback Jack Woodrow and hooker Hosea Fotukava. The second half opened up in much the same vein as the first. Both teams were throwing everything at each other but great defence was dominating the proceedings. In the 12th minute of the second half Avoca Beach narrowed the gap to 9 points to 6 with their second penalty goal to five-eight Toby Marks. Both teams had their chances. Hornsby were proving that little bit stronger at the breakdown and were taking a lot of ball when Avoca Beach appeared to be on the attack. The only try in the match was scored in the 26th minute of the second half. Avoca Beach was on the attack when Hornsby winger Leone Naisorotab took an intercept and raced 70 metres to score adjacent to the posts. The conversion of this try saw Hornsby go to a handy lead of 16 points to 6. This was the final score in the match but not after Avoca Beach tried everything to post points to get back into the match. They were even denied a try late in the match due to a knock-on. Hornsby move on further into the Finals and will play Ourimbah in the Minor Semi-final next week. Avoca Beach would be most disappointed with the result but this match was simply not their day.
In the Premier 1 Qualifying Elimination Semi-final at Woy Woy Oval, The Lakes defeated Ourimbah in a cliff hanger by 23 points to 17. This match was also proving an arm wrestle early on but as the match developed it became a free flowing spectacle with plenty of action from one end of the field to the other. The Lakes posted the first points in the match. They kicked a penalty goal and then followed this up with a try to winger Laufiso Vaisagote. Ourimbah then responded with their own penalty goal to make the score 8-3. The Lakes were certainly having a great half. They were playing well and having the territorial advantage in the match. They were rewarded with their second try in the 29th minute when prop Tim Poese crashed over for a converted try. They were played the better rugby as this stage and were gaining the rewards on the scoreboard. The Lakes kicked a further penalty just prior to halftime and they went to the break holding a very handy 18 points to 3 lead. Best players for The Lakes were fullback Macui Raulini, No.8 Va Talaileva and prop Tim Poese. Ourimbah were best served by No.8 Rob Peden, and forwards Josefa Biu and Jordan Clarke. The Lakes continued to play well in the early stages of the second half. They probably failed to take all their opportunities and on numerous occasions wrong options and errors cost them further tries. The first 20 minutes of the second half remained scoreless for both teams. In the 23rd minute of this half The Lakes scored their final try to take them to 23 points and their 20 point lead over Ourimbah seemed to be the end for Ourimbah. But it was not to be. Ourimbah, in the final 15 minutes, suddenly cranked into gear and commenced playing some pleasing rugby. In this period of time Ourimbah were able to score two converted tries and suddenly had made the score The Lakes 23 Ourimbah 17. They were suddenly within a converted try from The Lakes with 5 minutes of the match remaining. Ourimbah continued to attack for that 5 minutes and went so close to scoring to snatch the victory. But the Lakes held on to move into the Major Semi-final next Saturday against Terrigal. It was a great match to watch. The final stages of the match were gripping. Ourimbah would rue their slow start but they do get another chance next week when they take on Hornsby in the elimination Minor Semi-final.
Avoca Beach recorded a tight win in the Premier 2 Minor Semi-final when they defeated Ourimbah by 29 points to 24. There was nothing in this match throughout. The match could have gone either way, with point scoring going hand in hand for the entire match. At halftime Ourimbah led by the single point, by 17 points to 16 so it was definitely anyone’s match at that stage. Ourimbah continued to lead late into the match, and led by 24 points to 19 with time running out. But a late try and penalty goal saw Avoca Beach take the lead and hang on for the win. Best for Avoca Beach was centre Josh Paris who scored both tries for his team but it was the goal kicking of their five-eight Matt Kiddle that saw them home. Ourimbah would be disappointed. They scored 3 tries to 2 on the day but it was just not enough. Best for Ourimbah were five-eight Jaydn Pearson and No.8 Sam Kearney. Avoca Beach continues on and will play in the Preliminary Final in 2 weeks time.
Terrigal was able to win the President’s Cup Minor Semi-final defeating Ourimbah by 23 points to 7. Terrigal scored early in the match with a penalty goal and a try and this lead of 8 points to nil early on held them in good stead for the remainder of the match. This lead was the situation at halftime. Terrigal went on to lead by 16 points to 7 at the midway point of the second half so they obviously were in control of the match. Terrigal scored a late try to five-eight Jono Small to see them continue on in the Finals while Ourimbah hang up their boots for another season. Terrigal will play in the Preliminary Final in 2 weeks time.
In what proved an exciting clash The Lakes Yellow defeated Gosford in the Under 19 Minor Semi-final by 27 points to 17. This match was played in two halves. Gosford had the far better of proceedings in the first half and went to the halftime break leading 14 points to 5. They were playing structured rugby and were definitely the better team. But for whatever reason this all changed in the second half. The Lakes Yellow started to play well and their confidence grew as the match went on. The Lakes Yellow were able to post 22 points to Gosford’s 3 in the second half and was getting stronger as the match went on. Gosford never stopped trying but it was all in vain. It is The Lakes Yellow who continues on to the Preliminary Final.
The Women’s 10’s Minor Semi-final saw Avoca Beach prove too strong for Woy Woy and they ran out winners by 30 points to 5. Avoca Beach ran in 5 tries to one and were the stronger team on the day. Best player for Avoca Beach was Taylah Welsh, who scored two tries, while Woy Woy was best served by Stacey Markham. It is Avoca Beach who move on into the Preliminary Final in 2 weeks time.
