REPORT :
The Premier 1 Preliminary Final saw Avoca Beach defeat Terrigal by 39 points to 19 at Woy Woy Oval. In what proved an enthralling match, and also played in very hot conditions, but it was Avoca Beach who outlasted Terrigal to achieve the victory. Avoca Beach opened the scoring in the 6th minute when they crossed for the opening try. It was the result of a strong Avoca Beach maul which resulted in hooker Bradd Sheridan charging over for the try. This try was the first for Sheridan who crossed for two tries in the match. However Terrigal were quick to respond. A great try wide out saw winger Brent Merritt finish off a great backline move. This score line of 7 points to 5 remained the score for the first quarter of the contest. The latter period of the first half saw Avoca Beach cement their lead, when they crossed for a further try and a penalty goal near halftime. This took them to a very handy lead at the break. It was Avoca Beach leading by 17 points to 5 at halftime. The very hot conditions were making for trying conditions and this 12 point lead was certainly a very handy one. The first 20 minutes of the second half certainly saw Avoca Beach take control on the scoreboard. They were able to cross for a further two tries and a penalty goal to go to a 32 points to 5 lead at the midway point of the second half. The match was all but over at that stage. To Terrigal’s great credit they fought back hard in the final quarter of the match. They went over for two late tries to reduce the lead to 32 – 19 but a final try close to fulltime sealed the victory for Avoca Beach. There were some star performers for both teams. Best for Avoca Beach were hooker Bradd Sheridan, centre Alex Halls, halfback Mitch Magrath and fullback Kye Tancred. Terrigal were best served by fullback Jayden Woolley, flanker same Kenney and prop Antonio Cunha. The win sees Avoca Beach progress to the Grand Final at Industree Group Stadium next Saturday where they meet the Razorbacks in what should prove a gripping Grand Final. The loss sees Terrigal unable to defend their Premiership this year.
The Razorbacks recorded a good win in the Premier 2 Preliminary Final when they defeated Avoca Beach by 30 points to 20. This was an intense and tight encounter throughout. There was absolutely nothing between these two teams. The scores were locked at 13 points apiece at halftime, and even at the midway point of the second half, the scores were still locked up, at 20 points all. It was only a late penalty goal and a converted try that sealed the victory for the Razorbacks. Both teams crossed for three tries, but the goal kicking of the Razorbacks’ fullback Edan Sirone proved the difference. This victory sees all three of the Razorback senior men’s sides into the Grand Final next week. The Razorback Premier 2 team now meet Terrigal in the grand Final next Saturday.
Terrigal was able to win the President’s Cup Preliminary Final defeating Gosford/Kariong by the narrow margin of 24 points to 23. Gosford had the better of the start and it was not long before they had jumped to a handy 15 points to nil lead. However, Terrigal gradually worked their way back into the contest. Two late tries to Terrigal in the first half made the halftime score Gosford/Kariong 15 Terrigal 12. The match was up for grabs at that stage. Terrigal took the lead early in the second half but Gosford/Kariong responded soon after to regain the lead. It was anybody’s match. With time running out, Terrigal once again took the lead by 24 points to 23, and despite Gosford/Kariong having chances to kick winning penalty goals late in the half, Terrigal were able to hang on for victory. Terrigal go straight to the Grand Final and meet the Razorbacks in a replay of the Major Semi-final.
The Women’s 10’s Preliminary Final saw Terrigal run out winners by 53 points to 12 over The Lakes. It was a convincing win to the Terrigal team but they did not have it all their own way in the first half. The score was only 15 points to 12 in Terrigal’s favour at the halftime break. However Terrigal piled on the points in the second half and were able to score 38 points to nil in that final 20 minutes. The Lakes played some very pleasing rugby but it was just not their day. The win holds them in good stead for next week’s Grand Final when they meet Avoca Beach at Industree Group Stadium in the seaside derby.
