REPORT :
The Central Coast Rugby Union competition has reached the halfway point of the season. It is certainly developing into a very interesting second half of the season with the struggle for Semi-final spots now being hotly contested. After the washout from the previous Saturday, Round 9 went ahead on Saturday with some very interesting results.
The Match of the Day at Woy Woy Oval saw Ourimbah defeat Woy Woy by 32 points to 22. In a hard fought clash it was Ourimbah who came out on top. There was not too much between the two teams for much of the match but it was the visitors who were in front on the scoreboard for almost the entire game. Ourimbah got away to a very good start and in the first 40 minutes took control. They went to the halftime break leading by 20 points to 10. The second half was a far more even affair but it was Ourimbah who maintained that 10 point lead. Best players for Ourimbah were prop Brett Cunningham, lock Steven Pike and flanker Jarrod Grange. Grange had a most effective match, totalling 17 personal points through his goal kicking. Both teams scored three tries but it was the goal kicking of Jarrod Grange that was the difference on the day. Woy Woy attacked towards the end and had their chances but Ourimbah held on for the win. Best players for Woy Woy were flanker Lapana Vitale and No.8 Chris Paseka who both crossed for a try each. The win sees Woy Woy drop out of the Top Four and Ourimbah jump in, in what is proving an interesting tussle for semi-final spots at the midway point of the season.
Kariong continued their great form with a pleasing win over Gosford by 33 points to 20 at Kariong Oval. Kariong totally dominated the first half and were on continual attack. Gosford simply could not break out of their own territory. The Kariong defence was a feature of their victory. This dominance on the paddock by Kariong saw them go to a 13 points to nil lead at the halftime break, and then early in the second half were able to double that scoreline. Kariong led by 26 points to nil and the match was all but over even at that stage. To Gosford’s great credit they did fight back in the last quarter of the match. In fact they crossed for four very good tries, but it was all too late. Kariong sealed the win with a late converted try. Kariong are now in second spot on the competition ladder and their success this year so far has been one of the main talking points of the year. Best players for Kariong were Brent Bovis, who crossed for two tries, prop Cory Holwill, and back Mitch Clay. Others to play well were No.8 Phil Brown, hooker Justin Walker, and flanker Josh Bottero. Several players from Gosford put in very good efforts. These included winger Chris Heap, who scored two tries, winger Adam Howe, and hooker Vince Stewart. The win sees Kariong travelling along very well and will be most keen to maintain that form for the second half of the season. Gosford will need to record some big wins from now on if they are to make the Top Four. The win also sees Kariong hold on to the Challenge Shield.
The other two matches saw very big wins. Terrigal defeated Warnervale at The Haven Oval by 50 points to 7, while Avoca Beach piled on the points to defeat Hornsby by 67 points to 5 at Heazlett Park. However both losing sides put in very good efforts early on and forced the two home teams to fight for the victory. But later in both matches the home team took control on the scoreboard and recorded very comfortable victories.
Terrigal led by 22 points to 7 at the halftime break so at that stage the match was still quite even. However Terrigal were able to go on and score a total of 7 tries to one. Best players for Terrigal were five eight Alec Herridge, hooker Ethan McInnes, and lock Phil Heard. However it was an excellent team effort and the result sees Terrigal being the only undefeated team in the competition at the halfway point of the season. Best for Warnervale were centre Francis Sui, halfback Brenton Acreman, and five-eight Sione Ala.
Avoca Beach crossed for a total of 11 tries in their win over Hornsby. They dominated from the start to the finish and they led by 28 points to 5 at the halftime break. Avoca Beach were best served by prop Luke Sheridan, fullback Nathan Brown and centre Matt Anderson. Hornsby never gave up and were best served by Tim Graham-Robertson and Sam White. The win by Avoca Beach sees them back on the winners list after a couple of losses, and cements their position in the Top Four at the midway point of the season.
In President’s Cup at Joseph Banks Oval, The Lakes defeated The Entrance by 22 points to 12. The match, played under lights last Friday week, was contested in wintery conditions but once again in front of a pleasing crowd.
