REPORT :
There were some crucial and very exciting matches on the Central Coast this weekend, but the race to the Final Series is still unclear.
The clash at Kariong Oval saw Ourimbah play their best rugby of the season to defeat Kariong by 37 points to 3. The result was probably not a surprise, but certainly the size of the win to the visitors was certainly not expected. Ourimbah started the match very well and then continued to dominate the entire first half. They opened the scoring in the very first minute of the match with a converted try to lead 7 points to nil, and then continued to control proceedings. This dominance of possession and territory saw Ourimbah in Kariong territory for much of the first 40 minutes. During this period they were able to kick three penalty goals to increase their lead to 16 points to nil late into the first half. Kariong had their chances on occasions to reduce the lead but dropped ball and some wrong options prevented them from scoring. Kariong were missing several key players on the day, and they had no answer to Ourimbah’s control. This 16 nil score line was the halftime score. Best players for Ourimbah were inside centre Owen Turner, No.8 Sam Kearney, halfback Toby Carver and lock Josefa Biu. It was a very good all round performance by the visitors and they deserved the lead at the break. Kariong opened the scoring at the start of second half with a penalty goal to Scott Hanley. The home crowd were hoping this was to be the start of a resurgence by their team. Kariong did play well in the opening period of the second half but unfortunately for them no more points were forthcoming and there was no real resurgence on the scoreboard. The second half was a far more even battle on the paddock but it was always Ourimbah in control on the scoreboard. After the Kariong penalty goal Ourimbah quickly responded with a chip and chase try to Jack Stonestreet, and then followed this up with two further tries in either side of the field following two very good backline movements. A feature of the match was the excellent goal kicking of Jarrod Grange, who kicked 7 from 7 and several of these from near the sideline. Kariong never gave up, and players such as flanker Josh Bottero, prop Shannon Beavan and No.8 Phil Brown simply did not give up. The bonus point win to Ourimbah makes the race for positions 2 to 4 in the semi-finals very tight with still 5 teams fighting for those 3 positions. The win also sees Ourimbah regain for Challenge Shield from Kariong, and this Shield will be up for grabs next Saturday when Ourimbah are at home to Woy Woy.
Terrigal secured the Minor Premiership for this year with a 23 points to 7 victory over arch rivals Avoca Beach at The Haven Oval. It was a titanic struggle throughout and even though Terrigal edged ahead on the scoreboard late in the first half and were never headed, Avoca Beach were always close enough to get back into the match and to even claim the win. Terrigal grabbed the lead late in the first half and they led by 13 points to 7 at the halftime break. There was absolutely nothing between the two teams in the opening 40 minutes. Both teams had crossed for a try apiece in the first half. Terrigal had several very good players in the first half, and for the remainder of the match. These players included No.8 Josh Vainikolo, winger Dylan Calabria, fullback Frankie Webber, while back Aaron Tait kicked a total of 13 points to be the real difference between the two teams. Terrigal scored 10 points in the second half to the visitors nil, and thus were able to hang for a very significant victory. The match saw Terrigal only score two tries to one, and in some ways that probably indicated the difference between the two sides. However the goal kicking of Aaron Tait gained those vital extra points and ensured victory for the home team. Avoca Beach has several very effective players. These included fullback Luke Wiseman, who had one of his best games of the season, No.8 Chad Martin, and prop Josh Meadham, who crossed for the visitor’s only try. The win by Terrigal, in front of a huge crowd, see them safe and sound into the Finals while Avoca Beach is in a desperate struggle with several teams for that elusive semi-final position.
Gosford defeated Warnervale at Gosford Showground by 29 points to 21 in what proved a see-sawing match from start to finish. Gosford and Warnervale put on a game of open rugby with 7 tries in total being scored. The result could have gone either way. Gosford scored early to lead before Warnervale crossed for a converted try to grab the lead by 7 points to 5. This score line remained the score at the halftime break. It was a very intense first half and both teams knew victory was certainly still up for grabs. The game opened up on the scoreboard in the second stanza and the lead changed several times. In fact the lead changed 5 times in the match and this kept the spectators on their feet. Gosford grabbed the lead early in the second half through two quick tries, and led by 19 points to 7. Then Warnervale did exactly the same thing. They scored two quick tries to retake the lead by 21 points to 19 with time running out. However a penalty goal and a late try saw Gosford take the lead to win the match in what proved a very close encounter from start to finish. Best players for Gosford were five-eight Josh McGlynn, and No.8 Jackson Steinbeck, who crossed for two individual tries. Warnervale were best served by centre Sam Hetterick and halfback Brenton Acreman. The win keeps Gosford in with a chance for the Finals but things will have to go well for them in other matches if they are to make the Finals. Warnervale are playing strong rugby and will trouble teams in their final two matches of the season.
Hornsby may have avoided the wooden spoon this year with a meritorious win over The Lakes at Mark Taylor Oval, running out winners by 33 points to 19. It was a hard fought game throughout however Hornsby always just had their noses in front on the scoreboard. They went to the halftime break leading by 18 points to 5, and continued in the same vein in the second half to score a further 15 points. The Lakes were also able to post 14 points in that period so it can be seen that the second half was a very even affair. Hornsby led well into the second half, and it was a try on fulltime that saw the home side cement the win. Best players for Hornsby were Ben Astley, Ed Mills and Harry Fox, who crossed for 2 tries, while for The Lakes, Adam Kea played well as did James McCombie. Both teams will take a lot from the match. Hornsby has had two very strong performances over the last two Saturdays, while The Lakes would be pleased to bounce back over the big loss the previous weekend.
