REPORT :
The Central Coast rugby competition entered the final 5 rounds of the competition and the race to the Finals is still very much up in the air.
The Match of the Day at Woy Woy Oval saw the Woy Woy team inflict upon Terrigal their first defeat of the season when the home side won by 20 points to 19. It was a great game of rugby with both sides throwing everything at each other and the result was not known until the very final minute of the match. The first half was a very even struggle with Woy Woy going to the halftime break leading by only 13 points to 10. At that stage it was obviously still anyone’s match. Terrigal fought back early on the second half and took the lead on the scoreboard. Just when it seemed they would hang on for the victory it was Woy Woy who scored right at the end of the match to take the victory. Terrigal did score three tries to two and probably feel on that basis they deserved to win the game but it was not to be. Woy Woy on the other hand did not take all their chances in the match but did fail to score some tries but these lost opportunities saw them fail to add to the scoreboard. It was a hard fought match and obviously there was nothing between the two teams both on the paddock and on the scoreboard. Best players for Woy Woy were No.8 Chris Paseka, halfback Zac Stride, five-eight Fokolulu Taumalolo, who capped off a very good game with a try. Best for the visitors were No. 8 Josh Vainikolo, fullback Dan Sargeant and forwards Dan Hilton and Ethan McInnes. Terrigal do lose the undefeated mantle for the season but they will take a lot from the match despite the loss. The win really does cement their Top Four position in what is such a tight race to the Finals.
Avoca Beach held on to score an important win over Gosford at the Gosford Showground by 30 points to 21. In another high quality match the result was not confirmed until the final minutes of the match. Avoca Beach got away to a great start. An early try to Avoca Beach fullback Nathan Brown, followed by another try through a Dan Reihana intercept, and the visitors had jumped to a very handy 12 points to nil lead. The match was proving an exciting one with play moving from one end of the field to the other. Gosford struck back when their five-eight Josh McGlynn scored a very good converted try to make the scoreline 12-7. A penalty goal to Avoca Beach through Nathan Brown took the visitors to a bigger lead of 15 points to 7 and that remained the score at the halftime break. Avoca Beach continued to dominate the scoreboard in the early stages of the second half and was able to further increase their lead. A try and another penalty goal saw the visitors go to a 25 points to 7 lead at the 20 minute mark of the seconf half. Avoca Beach had played some very good rugby and was dominating proceedings. Best players for the visitors were half back Damon Boxsell, centre Dan Reihana, and veteran forwards Emile Thomas and Peter Steele. At this point in the match it seemed it was an inevitable win for Avoca Beach. However it was at this stage that Gosford started to play their best rugby. They scored a good try through Jackson Steinbeck and then were rewarded with a penalty try after some excellent scrummaging. Suddenly the Avoca Beach lead had been reduced to 25 points to 21. It was also during this period of play that Gosford were disallowed a try under the posts and play was brought back 65 metres. It was certainly a turning point in the match. Gosford had several very good players but none were better than five-eight Josh McGlynn, loose forwards Hugo Pike and Vince Stewart, and centre Tim Hill. However Avoca Beach held on and scored a try on fulltime to secure the vital bonus point win by 30 points to 21. The win sees Avoca Beach hold on to a spot in the Top Four while the loss makes it very difficult for the Gosford team in terms of making the Final Series this year. They cannot afford another loss.
Ourimbah also confirmed their Top Four position with a pleasing win over Warnervale at Woongarrah Oval by 38 points to 17. Ourimbah did score 5 tries to three and that was a good indication of the flow of the match. The first half was a very even struggle and Ourimbah only led by a narrow 14 points to 10 at the halftime break. However the second half was dominated by Ourimbah and they were able to go on and post a further 24 points to secure the important victory. Ourimbah played good rugby and getting back to their 2015 form. Best players for the victors were lock Josefa Biu, on his return to the team, flanker Jack Sheean, who crossed for 2 individual tries, and back Alex Dark. Warnervale gave it their all and were best served by flanker Ethan Sant, and backs Sione Tonga and Scott Fitzpatrick.
Kariong continued their great form this season with an excellent win over The Lakes at Slade Park, running out winners by 32 points to 5. Kariong confirmed their second spot on the competition ladder and their bonus point win will certainly boost their chances of reaching the big one at the end of the year. Kariong played consistently throughout the match and went to the halftime break leading by 17 points to nil. They continued that form into the second half and were able to post a further 15 points in the second stanza. It was a very efficient win and this side is proving to everyone that are definite Premiership contenders this year. Kariong had several very good players but none were better than No.8 Phil Brown, who led from the front all day, flanker Brent Bovis, lock Stanley Mila, and winger Eric Hema, who crossed for another try. The Lakes competed for the whole match but it was not their day. They could only break through for the single try against the almost impenetrable Kariong defence. Best players for The Lakes were James McCombie, Ricky Walker and Glenn Stone.
