REPORT :
The Central Coast rugby competition continued this weekend with some interesting results, in a competition that is becoming more and more interesting as the season gets closer and closer to the Finals Series. The competition currently sees 5 teams, positioned from 2nd to 6th, spread over only 2 competition points. It is certainly the closest race for the Finals in many years, and with 5 weeks to go those positions are really up for grabs.
The Match of the Day saw Avoca Beach revive their season when they defeated Ourimbah by 26 points to 5 at Ourimbah Rugby Park. It has not been a good few weeks for Avoca Beach in terms of results but this result has definitely put them right back into the picture. Avoca Beach started well and had a great first 40 minutes. They dominated proceedings for much of the first 40 minutes and as a result went to the halftime break leading by 19 points to nil. They played good rugby during this period and dominated the set pieces and as a result controlled much of the action. They crossed for three tries in this half and generally did most of the attacking. The players out wide scored all these three tries and their pace certainly shone. Two tries to winger Joe Carroll and one to fullback Nathan Brown had placed Avoca Beach in control. Best players for Avoca Beach during this half were the two players mentioned above. They were well supported by prop Luke Sheridan, centre Mitch Jacob and forward Peter Steele. The second half was a far more even affair. In fact the scoreline in the second 40 minutes was only 7 points to 5 in favour of the visitors. The second half became a real arm wrestle but because of the visitor’s excellent first half the result had already been determined. Ourimbah were far stronger in the second half. They had several very good players in this period, however none were better than flanker Keegan Evans, who later moved to hooker, prop Brett Cunningham and No.8 Jarrod Grange. Avoca Beach was able to get the ‘four try bonus point’ in the second half, and the win sees Avoca Beach back in the mix. Both teams are among those fighting for those final places in the semi-finals over the coming 5 weeks.
Kariong hung on to defeat Warnervale by 17 points to 12 at Kariong Oval. Like Avoca Beach, Kariong totally dominated the first half and won the match in that period. Kariong got away to a whirlwind start and had put 17 points on the scoreboard in just the first 20 minutes of the start of the match. It was a great start. In fact Kariong went to the halftime break leading by that 17 points to nil, and it seemed they would go on with that form in the second half. But it was not to be. Warnervale fought really hard in the second stanza and made a real game of it. They kept Kariong scoreless and were able to post 12 points for themselves. Their second try came just before fulltime however and it was too late for them to have any chance to snatch the victory. Kariong had several very good players, but none were better than lock Stanley Mila, prop Richard Harvey, and No. 8 Phil Brown, who crossed for a good try early in the match. Warnervale were best served by flanker Ethan Sant, lock Matt Willmott, and winger Brendon Jaymz who crossed for a very good try. Kariong did win the match but the fact they scored no points for much of the final parts of the match will be a worry for the coaching staff. Warnervale will trouble all teams in the final 5 rounds of the competition, and although unable to make the Finals, will prove troublesome for all opposition in the final weeks of the competition.
Woy Woy returned to the winner’s list with a convincing win over The Lakes at Woy Woy Oval by 56 points to 14. Woy Woy also won the match in the first half and went to the halftime break leading by a massive 35 points to nil. They were everywhere in attack and defence in this period and proved almost unstoppable. The Lakes did make a far better effort in the second half and were most competitive. The final 40 minutes was only 21 points to 14 in favour of the home team, so it proved a far more even encounter during that period. However like the two matches described above, it was all but over at the halftime break because of a very good first half performance. Woy Woy had some very effective players. Their best was five-eight Sione Toki, who crossed for three personal tries, inside centre Jovesa Kunawave, flanker Lapana Vitale, and back Alex Moore, who also kicked eight conversions. Woy Woy needed this win and they certainly got it. The win puts them amongst those 6 teams fighting for the semi-finals in what is developing into a tightly fought contest. The Lakes, to their credit, made a great effort in the second half. This was mainly due to some very good play by five eight Tony Williams, flanker Alan Reid, and prop Michael Ferry. They, like Warnervale, will trouble all teams in the final rounds of the competition, especially if they play for the full 80 minutes like they did in this match.
Gosford continued on their wining way by defeating Hornsby at Gosford Showground by 31 points to 0. Gosford was the better team throughout and did enough to secure the important win. Gosford led by 19 points to nil at the halftime break and were able to continue in the same form the get the win. The best players for Gosford included five eight Josh McGlynn, halfback Joel Wagner and hooker Vince Stewart. Hornsby played well and gave their all. Best for Hornsby were lock Ed Mills, prop Cameron Ridett, and Sam White. Both teams had players who played their 100th club game in this match – Gosford centre Tim Hill and Hornsby Club president Tim Burns both achieved this honour during this match.
Terrigal defeated The Entrance by 25 point to 10 in the President’s Cup competition. In a pleasing game of rugby it was Terrigal who were able to outlast The Entrance at The Haven Oval.
