REPORT :
The 2017 Central Coast Rugby season got back into the swing of things this weekend with some high scoring games of rugby.
The Match of the day at Heazlett Park was won by Ourimbah, 29 points to 10, over the home side, Avoca Beach. Avoca Beach started the match well and scored an early try to go up 7-0 but this was the only time they were ahead on the scoreboard. Once they settled into their rhythm, Ourimbah scored five tries, all of which came about from the pace of their outside backs. It was these players, Jaydn Pearson, Caleb Pritchard and Oliver Dark, who were the difference between the two sides. The forward packs were evenly matched with Avoca dominating most scrums, but they did not have an answer when Ourimbah got the ball to their speedy backs. By half-time Ourimbah had hit the lead by 8 points to 7 and they were never troubled on the scoreboard in the second half. Avoca made too many mistakes and each time, Ourimbah capitalised on these errors, gaining needed field position and posting points. The Jacob connection, Mitch and Blake, both had strong games for Avoca Beach but it was Ourimbah who claimed the bonus point win to jump to the top of the CCRU Pointstable.
At The Haven, Terrigal were far too good for Gosford, claiming a 43 points to 8 win. Terrigal scored seven tries to one which clearly shows they were the better team on the paddock. Frankie Webber ran in three tries from fullback and the centre pairing of Mitch Hirst and Dylan Calabria were solid in both attack and defence for the home side. The first half was a quite even struggle with the home side only going to the halftime break leading by 12 points to 3. At that stage it seemed the match was still up for grabs. However things all went Terrigal’s way in the second half. For Gosford, Mitch Cornwell had his usual strong game scoring a second half try for his side.
Woy Woy claimed their first win of the season, defeating The Lakes 42 points to 24 at Slade Park. The visitors were able to cross for six tries to four in their victory, and they were up by 28 points to 12 at halftime. They continued their try scoring in the second half. The Lakes certainly gave it their all, scoring four tries to keep the scores close, only down 35-24 late in the second half but a try on full-time to Woy Woy sealed their win. Best for the home side was flanker Wiremu Pirini while forwards Matt Graham and Blake Arahill both had great games for the visitors.
Kariong moved into second place on the ladder with a convincing 36 points to 13 win over Hornsby at Kariong Oval. Justin Walker at hooker and flanker Lachlan Peruch both had a great game for the home side, while prop Angus McQueen was strong for Hornsby. Kariong were always in control of the match, up 24 points to 13 as the match went into half-time and finished strongly to claim a bonus point win.
In the President’s Cup, The Entrance travelled to Woongarrah Sports Field and were able to post a big win over Warnervale by 41 points to 5.
