REPORT :
Round 10 of Central Coast Rugby Union saw four very close Premier 1 fixtures, highlighting the closeness of the 2017 competition.
At Woongarrah Sports Field, Terrigal ran in eight tries to four to defeat Warnervale by 48 points to 24. It was a solid win but the match didn’t go all Terrigal’s way as Warnervale certainly played well but just couldn’t grab the lead at any stage of the match. The scores would close in but then ill discipline would let the Wildcats down and Terrigal would sneak ahead again. Terrigal did lead from start to finish and were the more consistent side on the park but Warnervale will hold their heads high after a much improved effort on Round 9. Terrigal’s backs showed their class with fullback Frankie Webber having a great game and he was well supported by his winger Pat Niurua who ran in three tries, and Mitch Hirst in the centres. NSW Country representative Kevin McNamara had a strong game for the home side at prop, with his fullback Scott Fitzpatrick also playing well behind his side. Terrigal remain undefeated and go further ahead on the Premier 1 pointstable, while Warnervale’s bonus point, from scoring four tries, keeps them in the Top Four in fourth spot.
Woy Woy held on by a single point at Woy Woy Oval, defeating Kariong by 20 points to 19. Both sides went into this fixture knowing how important a win was but also confident that they could get the win. It was a true battle from start to finish and neither team was able to gain any sort of real dominance on the scoreboard or the paddock. The first ten minutes saw the teams sizing each other up with Kariong having the majority of possession but they couldn’t score any points and then, against the run of play, Woy Woy made a break and scored through their fullback Ben Skinner who had a very strong game for the home side. The tussle then continued, both teams would create turnovers but neither could then use their set piece to assert any authority on the match, often losing lineouts against the throw. Kariong organised a good backline play late in the half for centre Steve McGrath to score and give Kariong the lead 7-5, but Woy Woy were quick to hit back with a try outwide to go into the halftime break up 10-7. Both sides knew they could win, as soon as either side was able to take advantage of the turnovers they were creating they would be able to gain the momentum needed to score the necessary points. However, the second half continued in much the same vain as the first with neither side able to get completely on top. An early penalty goal to Woy Woy’s Fokolulu Taumalolo kept the Lions on top, 13-7 and soon after Woy Woy were able to break through the Wanderers defence at the edge of the ruck and flanker Chris Hitch was rewarded with a try under the posts. The conversion had Woy Woy up by 20 points to 7. At that stage, Woy Woy finally gained some ascendancy and were able to starve Kariong of the ball but then from nowhere, Kariong obtained a loose ball and ran the length of the field to score and the conversion from near the sideline made the score 20-14. Kariong scored again soon after, closing the score to be 20-19 and this time the conversion from the sideline was unsuccessful. The last 10 minutes was an even affair, Kariong threw everything at their opposition but to no avail and Woy Woy hung on to win. Kariong did grab a vital bonus point elevating them into second spot while Woy Woy remain in equal fifth.
Another nail biter was played out at Gosford Rugby Field, with Avoca Beach kicking a late penalty goal to defeat Gosford by 20 points to 17. It was a very even match throughout, with both teams having every opportunity to claim a win but neither making the most of those opportunities. It was a crucial match for both teams to elevate themselves closer to the Top Four and the tension was evident on the field. For the Sharks, Pat Wheatley had a strong game on the wing and then at halfback while flanker Hugo Pike was, once again, everywhere for the home side.
The Lakes claimed their first win of 2017 with a 27 points to 21 victory over Hornsby at Slade Park. Hornsby were ahead by 21 points to 14 at halftime after Harry Fox scored three tries for the visitors, however a change of tactic in the second half by The Lakes saw them score the needed points to claim an exciting win. In the first half, The Lakes were throwing away too many loose balls which Hornsby were counter attacking brilliantly with and scoring tries, once this stopped The Lakes got on top and grabbed the win.
On Friday night, Ourimbah had a gritty 17-7 win over The Entrance in the President’s Cup competition.
