REPORT :
The last round of the first half of the season didn’t disappoint with some quality games of rugby. It sees a very bunched Premier 1 pointstable but at this stage Terrigal, Ourimbah, Kariong & Warnervale make up the Top Four.
In the Match of the Day at Woongarrah Sports Field, Ourimbah hit their straps to claim a resounding 42 points to 14 win over Warnervale. The game started with neither side giving an inch and it took until almost the 20th minute before any points were posted. These points were scored by Ourimbah who, after a tight start, ran in two quick tries to take a 14-0 lead. The game then opened up with some more free flowing rugby then what the crowd had seen initially, but it was certainly a very close contest at this stage of the match. Ourimbah kept gaining their ascendency slowly but surely throughout the half and went into the break up 21 points to 7. Keegan Evans at hooker was having a strong game for Ourimbah while their flanker Jarrod Grange was all over the park and converting tries from the sideline to keep the scoreboard ticking over. The second half saw Warnervale start strongly and their prop Haydon Smith was leading from the front to give his side some hope of a victory. But it was not to be, as Ourimbah’s fitness and pace started to show and this was the difference between the two sides as Ourimbah ran in a further three tries in the second half. The win jumps Ourimbah up into second place while Warnervale drop to fourth.
At Woy Woy Oval, Terrigal dominated proceedings to defeat the home side 27-19. Terrigal got off to a terrific start which would have been exactly what they wanted and this gave them the platform they needed to secure their eighth win of 2017. BY halftime the Trojans were up 22-0 and this was enough with just one extra try in the second half for them to win. Woy Woy were much stronger in the second half and were able to take advantage of an extra man on the field to run some late tries but it was not the Lions’ day. Second rower Joe Taylor had another strong game for the visitors while flanker Chris Hitch was best on field for Woy Woy.
Kariong were too strong for Gosford at Gosford Rugby Field, running out winners 24 points to 15. It was a fairly even match throughout, but Kariong was able to finish on top and run in three tries to two. Both sides had their chances to get on top but Kariong was the side who was able to take more advantage of their chances, despite being two players down for a crucial stage of the second half. Kariong were up 10-0 midway through the first half after a sneaky dart by prop Cory Holwill saw the first try of the match. Winger Shay Neist was able to score a good backline try for the Red Devils late in the half to make the half-time score 10 points to 5 in favour of Kariong. The start of the second half saw Kariong consistently posting points on the board to keep their side on top. 10 early points scored by halfback Scott Hanley kept the scoreboard ticking over and managed to make any chance of a win difficult for Gosford. Five-eight Josh McGlynn was able to run in a try for Gosford and with 15 minutes to go the score was 24-15 giving Gosford some hope, but Kariong managed to hold the home side out and claim a crucial win to put them into equal second spot on the ladder. Flanker Hugo Pike had his usual strong game for the home side while Kariong’s number 8, Blake Silvester, was instrumental in his side’s win.
In a high scoring match, Avoca Beach defeated The Lakes 49 points to 26 at Heazlett Park. In a free-flowing game, which saw eleven tries scored, Avoca led from start to finish. Until late in the game, The Lakes always had a chance of hitting the lead but each time they got close Avoca were able to hit back and eventually cement their win. The home side were up 28 points to 12 at halftime, claiming an early bonus point, and went on to score another three tries in the second half. Elliott Dawkins had a great game for the Sharks and was rewarded with a try on the full-time siren. Best for The Lakes were Wiremu Pirini and Peni Raulini.
The President’s Cup fixture at Mark Taylor Oval saw The Entrance claim a win away from home, defeating Hornsby 24 points to 17.
