REPORT :
Round 8 of Central Coast Rugby Union has seen the Terrigal Trojans jump to a 7 point lead in our competition ladder with a tough 18-9 win over Kariong. The Match of the Day at Kariong Oval was an arm wrestle from start to finish but it was Terrigal who was able to claim an important win. Kariong did get off to a great start and led 9-0 at half-time with three penalty goals to their halfback Scott Hanley. Kariong lost the game in the first half with poor execution as they saw multiple chances to score tries go begging. Terrigal kept themself in the game and were able to score a try just after half-time and once they eventually jumped in front, they never lost that lead and went on to win and maintain their undefeated status. The Number 8’s for both sides had very strong games with Sam Kenny showing his Trojans the way forward, while Phil Brown for Kariong was crucial to his team’s good performance.
Woy Woy caused a minor upset at Ourimbah Rugby Park when they scored 4 tries to 2 to beat Ourimbah 26-13. Most local rugby supporters had tipped Ourimbah to claim their first win in three rounds but it was not to be. Woy Woy were never troubled on the scoreboard, leading 14-8 at half-time. The Lions dominated the set pieces which allowed them to make good metres up the field and score some wonderful tries. Best for Woy Woy were forwards Sam Soane, Chris Hitch & Alifeleti Atiola while Jarrod Grange and Matt King both served Ourimbah well.
Gosford moved back into the winners’ circle with a 26-23 win over The Lakes. At half-time The Lakes were up by 17 points to 10 and they were feeling confident of claiming their first win in 2017. Poor discipline by the home side saw them playing short for periods of time during the game and Gosford were able to keep in touch on the scoreboard with penalty goals from these infringements. The score see-sawed throughout the second half and The Lakes had a 23-21 lead with 10 minutes to go, but a try to Gosford with 5 minutes to go gave them a win they were desperate for. Both halfbacks had strong games, Sam Underwood had his Red Devils well organised all over the paddock while Billy Moroney kept his team on the go forward.
At Mark Taylor Oval, a bonus point win to Warnervale moved them into second spot on the points table. The Wildcats beat Hornsby 31 points to 15. Warnervale were the best team on the day and controlled all facets of play. The visitors led 19-10 at half-time so Hornsby had high hopes of a win but Warnervale were able to take control and score tries through their ever improving backline. Haydon Smith had a great game for the Wildcats while Ed Mills in Hornsby’s second row was everywhere.
On Friday night, Avoca Beach won a tough President’s Cup fixture, 26-17, over The Entrance at Joseph Banks Oval. Avoca led throughout but the Rams kept scoring to keep the visitors under pressure.
