REPORT :
Round 11 saw the places on the competition ladder shuffled once again, leaving the Final Four still an open race between the top six Clubs at this stage.
Woy Woy dominated proceedings at Woy Woy Oval, defeating Warnervale by 39 points to 11. Woy Woy got off to a good start and were always in control of this Match of the Day. They led by 22 points to 6 at the half time break with Warnervale scoring soon after half-time to close the gap to 22-11, but Woy Woy then put their foot on the accelerator and were unstoppable for the remainder of the match. The Lions ran in 6 tries to 1 and showed everyone what they can do when they have a good day. Woy Woy’s captain Kane Burns was best on field for the home side while Matt Willmott put in a strong effort for Warnervale. The win jumps Woy Woy over Warnervale into the Top Four where they will want to remain for the next seven weeks.
Kariong won a very tight match over Avoca Beach, 14 points to 10, at Heazlett Park. Kariong led by 11 points to 3 at half-time and managed to hold out Avoca in the second half through some courageous defence. Avoca just could not break through Kariong’s defence and when the pressure was on, the home side made some bad decisions to lose their opportunities to score. The backline pairing of Ryan Wallbank and Mitch Clay were once again the best players for the Wanderers while Emile Thomas, in his 200th First Grade game for the Sharks, played his usual strong game. The win holds Kariong in second spot, though they’ve been equalled by Ourimbah, while Avoca grab a handy bonus point to close the gap between themselves and the five teams above them on the competition ladder.
Gosford did what was needed to claim a 34 points to 6 win over Hornsby at Mark Taylor Oval. It was close game in which Gosford slowly gained the ascendancy and ended up scoring six tries to none, but missed most of the conversions to keep the score tight. The Red Devils led by 10 points to 6 at half-time and knew they had to go up a gear to claim this win, they did that and ran in the necessary tries. The second row pairing of Luke Brown and Chad Sneyd were the best players on field for the visitors, while Hornsby’s hooker John King was best for his side.
Ourimbah was able to claim a 48 points to 12 win over The Lakes at Ourimbah Rugby Park, but the score does not reflect how close this game was. It took over twenty minutes for any points to be scored, and it was Ourimbah who scored the first try and then quickly their second, to lead 14-0. The Lakes hit back to make it 14-7, while Ourimbah scored right on half time to go into the break up by 19 points to 7. The Lakes were let down in the second half by some ill discipline and Ourimbah took advantage of their lack of structured play and ended up running in eight tries to one. The win puts Ourimbah into second place and The Lakes showed that they are not to be taken lightly.
The Entrance had a good 15 points to 0 win over Terrigal in the President’s Cup competition. Josh Finney scored the two tries for the Rams in his side’s win which puts them one win away from the Top Four of this grade.
