REPORT :
The start of the second half of the Central Coast Rugby Union season saw several upset results and some quite surprising scores. It is building into a very interesting competition and the race to the Finals is on for young and all.
The Match of the Day saw Ourimbah defeat Woy Woy by 78 points to 5 at Ourimbah Rugby Park. Ourimbah winning may have not been a surprise but the size of the victory was certainly a major surprise. The match was all Ourimbah from start to finish. Woy Woy simply had no answer to the onslaught. Ourimbah have definitely placed themselves as the premiership favourites at this stage of the season. Ourimbah controlled everything from the very start. They went to the halftime break leading by 22 points to nil and even at that stage it seemed that the match was all but over. The second half was an even far more one sided situation. Ourimbah continued their attack and were able to post a further 56 points. Best players for Ourimbah were halfback Matt King and lock Josefa Biu, while Owen Turner, Jarrod Grange and Toby Carver contributed greatly towards the victory. Woy Woy were simply outplayed. Their best players were Luke Ingold, Max Edwards and Fokolulu Taumalolo, who scored their only points. The win sees Ourimbah well and truly entrenched at the top of the competition table, while the loss sees Woy Woy drop out of the Top Four.
In an upset, Kariong proved too strong for Terrigal at The Haven Oval and ran out winners by 29 points to 5. Kariong were the far better team on the day and fully deserved the win. They controlled proceedings from the kick-off and went to the halftime break leading by 17 points to nil. It was an excellent first half of rugby. Kariong had definitely come to play rugby and they did. Best performers for them at that stage were hooker Justin Walker, who was everywhere, five-eight Mitch Clay, who had one of his best games this season, and halfback Scott Hanley. Terrigal tried to get back into the match in the second period but simply were unable to do so. They were only able to respond with a lone try to winger Brent Merritt while Kariong were able to secure the victory but posting a further 12 points. Best players for Terrigal were Merritt, halfback Sekope Maea and Alex Brewin. Terrigal stay in the Top Four despite the loss but the teams are certainly bunching up, and this group includes Kariong. The win by Kariong makes a semi-final position almost a reality this year.
Hornsby caused another minor upset when they defeated Warnervale at Mark Taylor Oval by 27 points to 22. This match went point for point for the entire 80 minutes and it was only in the final 15 minutes that Hornsby were able to make the break and establish a handy lead. Hornsby held a tight lead of 15 points to 12 at the halftime break. Warnervale actually took the lead early in the second half when they scored a try in the opening few minutes of that half. This lead of 17 points to 15 was quickly responded to by Hornsby. They scored their own try to take the lead 22 points to 17, and then followed this up soon after with another to lead 27 points to 17 with time running out. Warnervale scored a late try to create a spirited and exciting final few minutes. Hornsby was able to hang on for victory in what was a most emotional day. Best players for Hornsby were five-eighth Mitch Fullager, flanker Petty Latu, No.8 Lachlan Skulander and fullback Sam White. Warnervale were best served by flanker Cameron McNamara, Jake Marlow, Kevin McNamara and Daniel Ford
The Lakes leapt into the Top Four when they defeated Gosford by 45 points to 15 at Gosford Showground. The first half was a very even affair with nothing between the two teams. The Lakes went to the halftime break leading by only 12 points to 10 so both teams saw themselves with a great chance of securing the win. However the second half saw The Lakes take control and they won this half by 33 points to 5. It was a most convincing last 40 minutes. Fullback Macai Raulini continued his wonderful form for The Lakes and was able to cross for 3 great tries. He has scored many tries in recent weeks and has been one of the form players in the competition this year. His elusive running has proved almost unstoppable. He was well supported by centre Paul Satu and halfback Logan Hemopo. Gosford played quite well early on but just could not stop The Lakes’ attack in the second half. Best players for the home team were Sean Anlezark, Sam Underwood and Ben Eccles. The win sees The Lakes move into the Top Four in what is proving their best season in many years.
The Entrance secured a vital win in President’s Cup when they defeated Avoca Beach by 23 points to 19 at Heazlett Park. There was absolutely nothing in this match and both sides felt victory was very possible for the entire match.
The Women’s 7’s competition yesterday saw some exciting results and some very good rugby. Woy Woy continued their winning ways while Terrigal, Avoca Beach, Warnervale and Hornsby all secured a win each.
