REPORT :
Round 14 of Central Coast Rugby Union saw some very interesting results, as well as some quite high scoring matches. However the Top Four remains far from settled at this stage.
The Match of the Day saw Terrigal come from behind to defeat Avoca Beach by 45 points to 19 at The Haven Oval. The match was played in front of a huge crowd with wonderful weather conditions. Terrigal started the game extremely well and had crossed for the opening try in just the first few minutes. This 7 points to nil lead was however quickly overtaken. In fact much of the remainder of the first half was dominated by Avoca Beach. The visitors were playing the better rugby and were controlling most aspects of the game. It was during this period that Avoca Beach had taken the lead, and close to halftime were leading by 19 points to 7. Terrigal did kick a penalty goal close to the break to make the halftime score Avoca Beach 19 Terrigal 10. At that stage the match was certainly up for grabs but Avoca Beach were definitely taking the game to the home team. The second half saw both teams battle it out in the early stages but, as the match went on, Terrigal became stronger and stronger, both on the paddock and on the scoreboard. Terrigal took control in the final 20 minutes and were able to cross for several match winning tries. For the second week in a row Avoca Beach were kept scoreless in the second half. Best players for Terrigal were No.8 Mike Ozdilli, lock Joe Taylor, and flanker Salipopo Pamata. These forwards led a pack of forwards who took control of the set pieces. Another feature of the match was the goal kicking of Mark Koteczky, who kicked all 6 conversions, and added a penalty goal as well. Avoca Beach gave it their all, but just could not maintain the effort for the full 80 minutes. Best players for the visitors were veteran prop Luke Sheridan, fullback Dylan Cadogan and winger Shaun Townsend. The loss sees Avoca Beach in a fight for their lives to make the Finals and will need things to go totally their way to do so. Terrigal, with the win, hang on to second spot and have showed form resurgence in recent weeks.
The Lakes recorded a crucial victory at Slade Park when they defeated Warnervale by 24 points to 10. It was such an important win for the home side as it places them just out of the Top Four, still with a significant chance of making the Finals. The Lakes were controlling much of the game in the first half and went to the halftime break with a very handy 14 points to nil lead. It was a good lead but not enough at that stage. The Lakes went further ahead in the second half to lead 19 points to nil. However the final parts of the match saw Warnervale post two tries to reduce the lead but it was all too late. Best players for The Lakes were forwards Jerry Tikomailepanoni and James McCombie, who both worked hard for the entire 80 minutes. The backs, led by Macui Raulini, Dylan Galvin and Fillimona Seru, certainly took advantage of the good ball supplied by the forward pack. Warnervale fought to the end, and players such as Kevin McNamara and Matt Willmot never stopped giving their all.
Woy Woy hung on to defeat Gosford by 50 points to 40 at Woy Woy Oval. This match was a try fest to say the least. Attack seemed to be the key to the day while the defence from both teams seemed to be a secondary factor. Gosford went to the halftime break leading by 21 point to 14. Gosford deserved their lead through some very good rugby. However Woy Woy took the lead early in the second half when they crossed for two very quick tries. They had jumped to the lead by 26 points to 21. At that stage it seemed the home side would go on with it and secure a comfortable victory. But it was not to be. Gosford got back into the match and pushed the home side right through to full time. It was a tight struggle throughout but Woy Woy were able to outlast the visitors on the scoreboard. Best players for Woy Woy were Dante Otto, Wes Black and Alifeleti Atiola. These three players led what was a good attacking team. They will have to work on their defence mechanisms over the next few weeks as they allowed Gosford to score too readily during the match. Gosford were best served by centre Josh McGlynn, who had a wonderful match, as well as veteran back Adam Carlisle. These two players led a visitor resurgence when things seemed lost early in the second half. The win sees Woy Woy hold on to third spot on the competition ladder but with teams just out of the Top Four, they cannot afford to relax in the coming weeks.
Ourimbah proved far too strong for Hornsby at Ourimbah Rugby Park. The home side ran out winners by 64 points to 24. The match was all but over by halftime when Ourimbah had already raced to a 36 points to 0 lead. Hornsby simply had no answer to what was a very good overall team performance. Hornsby made a far better effort in the second half. They were able to post their own 24 points but still allowed Ourimbah to increase their lead by another 28 points. Ourimbah showed why they are leading this competition and have all but secured the Minor Premiership. Hornsby, although defeated, are still very capable of scoring points. Best players for Ourimbah were No 8. Elekama Laupola, five-eight Jonte Witt, and Rob Peden, who was able to score two tries on his return from injury. Hornby never stopped and were best served by lock Ben Toga, who scored a try, flanker Ollie Jenkins and five-eight Sam White.
The Women’s 7’s competition yesterday saw Avoca Beach, Terrigal, Hornsby and Woy Woy secure vital wins in their respective matches. With four weeks to go, things are quite close for the 6 teams as they race for a position in the Finals Series.
