REPORT :
The Central Coast Rugby Union competition continues to tighten as the season enters the last 5 rounds of the season. The results yesterday saw a distinct Top Four develop; however there are a couple of teams looming just behind them on the competition ladder.
The Match of the Day saw Woy Woy storm home to defeat The Lakes by 49 points to 22 at Slade Park. The first half was a very even affair with both teams giving their all. There was absolutely nothing between the two teams as both teams went to the halftime break locked at 10 points apiece. It appeared at that stage that the match would go right down to the wire. However the second hall was a whole different matter. The second half was all Woy Woy. They were able to post 39 points to 12 in what was a most dominant performance. The Lakes tried everything to get back into the match but things simply did not go their way on the day. The harder they tried the less likely things were going to work out. The outstanding individual performance was by Woy Woy back Blake Arahill who crossed for 4 personal tries in what was his best effort this year. He very well supported by centre Wade Hannell and forward Nick Garnett. Others to play well included Wes Black, who crossed for 2 tries, and Adam McVean The win was so important for Woy Woy as it places them in fourth position, with a small gap to the following teams. They have some breathing space, at least for a few weeks. Best players for the home side were forwards James McCombie and Harry Pirini, while winger Eddie Uniwawa was dangerous with the ball in hand. The Lakes would be most disappointed with their second half effort. They are so close to the Finals but will now need to get some crucial wins over the remaining 5 weeks of the competition.
Ourimbah confirmed their favouritism for the Premiership when they came from behind to defeat Avoca Beach by 41 points to 18 at Heazlett Park. The first half was a very even struggle but it was Avoca Beach who went to the break with the lead. The home side played very well in the first 40 minutes and their lead of 18 points to 12 at the halftime break was very well deserved. They worked hard for their lead and they had Ourimbah a little frustrated at that stage. The second half saw things change completely. Ourimbah came storming out after the break and they were able to post 29 unanswered points in the second half. It was such a turnaround. Avoca Beach had no answer to this onslaught. Ourimbah were too big and too strong during this period, and Avoca Beach’s youthful teams had no answer. Best players for Ourimbah, especially in the second half, were prop Brett Cunningham, forward Keegan Evans, back Owen Turner and Will Fraser. The score line of 7 tries to 2 gives a fair indication of the flow of the match. Best players for the home side were centre Mitch Jacob, who was well supported by flankers Harrison Bowcock and Liam Donsworth. The loss leaves Avoca Beach in a vulnerable position in terms of the Top Four and the next few weeks will be vital.
The other two matches saw Top Four teams cement their positions with most dominate performances. Terrigal was able to defeat Gosford, while Kariong were far too strong for Hornsby.
At Gosford Showground Terrigal defeated Gosford by 43 points to 12. The first 20 minutes was quite an even struggle and no points were posted by either side during that period. However the match soon opened up and it was Terrigal who took control. Terrigal went to the break leading by 26 points to 5 so the visitors certainly took control in the period leading up to halftime. Terrigal were able to maintain control in the second period and were able to post a further 17 points in the final 40 minutes. Best players for Terrigal were flanker Ryan Metcalfe, while wingers Dan Sargeant and Brent Merritt were both able to cross for a double each. Forward Joe Taylor was also strong, as was centre Vaughan Kernan. Jackson Steinbeck never stopped for the home side, and was rewarded with a try. The win sees Terrigal hold their second spot on the ladder in what is developing into a close battle for the Finals. Gosford remain at the bottom of the table which will see them start preparing for 2019.
Kariong were far too strong for Hornsby at Kariong Oval, and ran out winners by 64 points to 27. In a match most thought may be quite a struggle, it proved to be a very one sided clash. Kariong went to the halftime break leading by 36 points to 10 and the match was all but over even at that stage. Kariong continued their good form into the second stanza and were able to post a further 28 points during that time. Best player for Kariong was Blake Silvester, who crossed for 4 personal tries, and he never stopped for the entire 80 minutes. He was well supported by forward Toutai Aho, and backs Henry Ahovelo and Mitch Clay. Hornsby were best served by flanker John King, Harry Fox and Chris O’Rourke. The win sees Kariong lock in third position on the competition ladder.
The Women’s 7’s competition yesterday saw Avoca Beach and Warnervale secure vital wins in their respective matches.
