REPORT :
Central Coast Rugby Union continued yesterday with some excellent games of rugby. Tension and excitement continues to build as we get closer to the Finals. There is still 6 weeks to go and anything can happen as teams are very close in all grades.
In the Match of the Day, Terrigal had a very good second half to run out winners over The Lakes by 41 points to 17 at The Haven Oval. There was absolutely nothing between the two teams in the first 40 minutes, both teams went point for point and neither team was able to gain any ascendancy. Both teams were playing pleasing rugby and there were many opportunities for points scoring. It was The Lakes who scored a converted try right on halftime to enable them to go to the break leading by 12 points to 11. At that stage it appeared the match would go right down to the wire. However it was in that final 40 minutes that Terrigal were able to break away on the scoreboard. Terrigal were able to cross for several tries but at the same time were able to limit The Lakes to the single try. Terrigal posted 5 tries in the match to The Lakes’ 3 and that was a fair indication of the flow of the match. Best players for Terrigal were flankers Salipopo Pamata and Ryan Metcalfe, halfback Sekope Maea and hooker James Storey. A pleasing feature of the match were the tries scored by Terrigal’s outside backs, Brent Merritt, Dan Sargeant and Mitch Hirst. The Lakes were definitely in this match for much of it, but it did get away from them in those final 15 minutes. The Lakes has several good players, and these included five-eight Fillimona Seru, and forwards Harry Pirini and James McCombie. The win sees Terrigal jump back into second spot on the competition ladder while The Lakes remain in the Top Four despite the loss.
Kariong secured a further victory when they defeated Warnervale at Woongarrah Oval by 29 points to 21. This was such a significant win for Kariong as it sees them go to third spot on the ladder. The win culminates in a significant comeback for Kariong after being far down the ladder earlier in the season. However, they did not have it all their own way in this clash. The two teams alternated the lead throughout the entire 80 minutes. Kariong only led by 5 points to nil at the halftime break, so it is obvious the first stanza was such an even struggle. Most points were scored in the second half. Warnervale took the lead immediately after halftime with a converted try. After that the lead in the match chopped and changed. Kariong did score 5 tries to 3 in the match and that may be a fair indication of how the match panned out. Best performers for Kariong were lock Adam Pearson, who scored 2 tries, halfback Scott Hanley and five-eight Mitch Clay. Warnervale will be most disappointed with the result. It makes things difficult for them. Best for the home side on the day were the McNamara brothers, Kevin and Cameron, who both never stopped all day.
Ourimbah showed why they are at the top of the competition ladder when they blitzed Gosford by 76 points to 12 at Ourimbah Rugby Park. The match was never in doubt for the home side as they went about their business. Ourimbah went to the halftime break leading by 33 points to 12. They maintained the performance in the second half when they were able to post a further 43 unanswered points. It was a most creditable performance to say the least. Best players for Ourimbah were prop Will Fraser and five-eight Jonte Witt, while flanker Jarrod Grange was able to post 21 individual points with a try and 8 goals. Ourimbah are 16 points clear at the top of the competition ladder and appear almost certain of having secured the Minor Premiership at this stage of the season. Gosford were unable to make any impact on the home side. The visitor’s best players were Jackson Steinbeck, Sam Underwood and Isaac Steinbeck.
Hornsby scored an upset win over Avoca Beach at Mark Taylor Oval when they won by 31 points to 19. Hornsby got away to a great start and by halftime had jumped to a very handy 19 points to nil lead. During this first 40 minutes both teams probably had equal possession, but it was Hornsby who took their chances and Avoca Beach did not. Avoca Beach attacked for lengthy periods but just could not get the points on the scoreboard. Hornsby were certainly playing well. Best players for the home side were outside centre Harry Fox, hooker John King and No.8 Lachlan Skulander. Hornsby continued the rage soon after the break and crossed for a further try. At that stage their lead seemed invincible. However Avoca Beach started to get going soon after and made a resurgence. They were able to cross for three tries, but the early Hornsby lead was too large to overcome. Best players for Avoca Beach in their resurgence period were flanker Liam Donsworth and fullback Shaun Townsend. The loss for Avoca Beach sees them positioned just out of the Top Four and the next few weeks will be most significant for them. Hornsby showed they will trouble all teams in the final 6 rounds and they will cause heartache for all opposition.
The Entrance secured a vital win in President’s Cup when they defeated Woy Woy by 18 points to 17 at Ettalong Oval. There was absolutely nothing in this match and both sides felt victory was very possible for the entire match. For the second week in a row The Entrance was able to kick a penalty goal on the fulltime whistle to snatch the victory.
The Women’s 7’s competition yesterday witnessed some exciting results and some very good rugby. Woy Woy, Terrigal and Avoca Beach secured wins in their respective matches.
