REPORT :
The 2019 Central Coast Rugby season resumed after the Easter break with some interesting results. The results have left 4 teams – Ourimbah, Terrigal, Gosford and Avoca Beach – with a break on the remaining teams but it is still very much early days in the competition.
In the Match of the Round at Gosford Showground, Gosford defeated Kariong by 30 points to 6. Gosford kicked an early penalty goal to their half back Damien Montgomery to take the lead by 3 points to nil after only 3 minutes. It was a good start for Montgomery who was playing his 350th game for the Club. At the 12th minute mark, Gosford increased their lead after an excellent try. It was an individual effort by their flanker Pepani Nabuliwaq, who beat several players to race 40 metres to score adjacent to the posts. This scoreline of 10 points to nil was a handy lead and one that was maintained for quite awhile. For much of the remainder of the half both teams had periods of attack and also of defence but neither team was able to post any further points until late in the half. This match was fast flowing, with play going from one end of the field to the other yet at the same time the physical contact was not to be denied. There were some very tough individual clashes in the match. In fact at times some individual battles saw the teams forget about the team’s pattern of play, and often chances to score went begging. Both teams kicked a penalty goal each just before the break to make the score 13 points to 3 at the halftime break. The game was still very much up for grabs but Gosford certainly had an advantage on the scoreboard. Both teams had several very good performers on the paddock. Best for Gosford were their flanker Pepani Nabuliwaq, but he was very well supported by fellow flanker Sean Anlezark, five-eight Sam Underwood, hooker Vince Stewart and lock Mitch Cornwell. Best players for Kariong were breakaways Lachlan Peruch and Brent Bovis, and halfback Scott Hanley. A further penalty goal early in the second half to each team saw Gosford maintain their lead into the half by 16 points to 6. However for much of the first 25 minutes of the second half both teams were trying their very best to get a breakthrough but were unable to do so. Individual battles saw several players receiving yellow cards to disrupt their respective chances of scoring. Gosford were trying to cement the win while Kariong were trying to get back into the match. However the final 10 minutes saw Gosford score two match winning tries. The first was scored from a Kariong miskick and the final one was almost on fulltime. Although Gosford had secured a comfortable victory in the end, the match was much tighter than the score indicated, Gosford have shown they will definitely push for a Finals spot this year after starting the season with 3 meritorious wins.
Ourimbah continued on their winning way when they comfortably defeated Woy Woy by 50 points to 12 at Woy Woy Oval. The first half was a quite even struggle with neither team really taking total control. Ourimbah went to the halftime break leading by only 16 points to 12 so the result was still very much up for grabs at that stage. However the second half saw Ourimbah post a further 34 points with no response from the home team on the scoreboard. Ourimbah scored a try early in the second half and continued their dominance for the remainder of the second stanza. Best players for Ourimbah were back Jack Stonestreet, who crossed for 3 individual tries, fullback Tyrone Davies, who scored an individual total of 20 points, as well as flanker Jarrod Grange. Best for Woy Woy on the day were lock Jack Dewar and halfback Damon Boxswell.
Avoca Beach defeated Hornsby at Heazlett Park by 24 points to 10. However the home team certainly did not have it all their own way. Hornsby actually played the better rugby in the first half and went to the halftime break as deserved leaders by 10 points to 7. It appeared at that stage that an upset was on the cards. However Hornsby could not maintain this control and it was Avoca Beach who soon took the lead and went on to the secure the win. In fact in the second half Avoca Beach were able to outscore Hornsby by 17 points to nil to claim the victory. Hornsby have strengthened over the first three rounds and will continue to grow especially when they get their first matches at home. Best for Avoca Beach were Mitch Jacob, who scored a try and kicked 2 conversions, Fion Henderson-Foley and Matt Anderson. For Hornsby, centre Nate Webb, and Tim Graham-Robinson, never stopped trying. It was an important win for Avoca Beach and despite the nervous first half were able to go on to gain a bonus point victory.
Terrigal proved far too strong for Warnervale The Haven Oval and ran out winners by 60 points to nil. Terrigal were in control right from the start. They led by 38 points to nil at the halftime break and then went on to post a further 22 points in the second half. It was a most complete performance by the Terrigal side. They scored 10 tries to nil in what was a totally dominating performance. Warnervale had no answer on the day. Best for Terrigal were Dan Sargeant, Ethan McInnes, Sekope Maea, Josh Vainikolo and Jim Storey. Warnervale were best served by Matt Martin, Deahn Wanstall and Dean Crofskey, who all never stopped trying all day.
In the President’s Cup, The Lakes hung on to defeat The Entrance by 7 points to 0 at Joseph Banks Oval. There was nothing in this clash from start to finish.
Women’s 7’s rugby was dominated on Saturday by a strong performance from last premiers Avoca Beach. They defeated Hornsby in both their matches.
