REPORT :
The Central Coast Rugby Union competition continued yesterday with some enthralling results. There were some lopsided results but also some very close tussles.
The Match of the Day between Ourimbah and The Lakes at Ourimbah Rugby Park saw Ourimbah continue on their winning ways and the home side ran out winners by 39 points to 12. Early in the match Ourimbah did not have it all their own way. The first half was a tight struggle but it was Ourimbah who took the early lead. They had jumped to a 12 points to nil lead in the first half and things looked ominous for The Lakes. However they put in a most dogged performance and put themselves right back into the match with a try later in the half. Ourimbah went to the halftime break leading by 12 points to 7. The match was then still very much there for the taking. However Ourimbah continued their great second half form. They proved too strong in that final 40 minutes and were able to post 27 further points in that period. The Lakes gave it their all. In fact The Lakes were very much in the match until midway through the second half before Ourimbah took control and stormed ahead both on the scoreboard and on the paddock. The Ourimbah scrum was the dominant feature of the match. Best players for Ourimbah were winger Daniel Ford, who crossed for 4 tries, flanker Jack Sheehan and Jarrod Grange. The Lakes had several very good performers. These included prop Dan Aliifaalago, halfback Logan Hemopo, No.8 Blake Moroney and winger Noah Hallipalli. Ourimbah confirmed their lead at the top of the competition ladder while The Lakes, despite the loss, hang on to fourth position.
Terrigal defeated Hornsby at Woongarrah Oval No.2 in what turned out to be such a high scoring match. The final score in Terrigal’s favour, 62 points to 37, saw a total of 99 points scored in the match, however it was not until the final period of the match that the result was cemented. The first half saw Hornsby get away to a flyer. It was not long after the kickoff before Hornsby had crossed for 3 tries and were leading by 17 points to nil. It was such a great start for them. Gradually Terrigal hit back and by halftime had taken the lead by a narrow 24 points to 23. It was proving to be such a tightly fought game of rugby. It was high scoring match but one that was so close for the first 65 minutes. Hornsby scored early in the second half to take the lead again and a possible upset was on the cards. Hornsby took three intercepts in the match and these length of the field tries were certainly proving exciting for the spectators. Much of the second half was close however Terrigal was able to post several late tries to jump ahead on the scoreboard. The end result of 62-37 seemed an easy win but it was not. Terrigal did finish the stronger and were able to take control in that final period. Best players for Terrigal were Ethan McInnes, who crossed for 3 tries, fullback Jayden Woolley, who posted an individual tally of 22 points, and back Frankie Webber. Hornsby played well and were right in the match for much of 80 minutes. Best players for them were winger Harry Fox, fullback Mitch Fullager and five-eight Sam White.
Warnervale defeated Avoca Beach in a nail biter at Woongarrah Oval No.1 by 27 points to 22. Avoca Beach had the slightly better of the first half and led at the halftime break by 8 points to 3. Avoca Beach continued to have the better of play early in the second half and increased their lead early in this half. It all seemed to going quite well for the visitors however the home side suddenly began to put things together. Some good play saw Warnervale storm home and take the lead and the match. Warnervale scored 4 tries to 3 in the 80 minutes and that fact alone showed the closeness of the result. The game could have gone either way but some good play by Warnervale in the final stages of the match saw them grab the victory. The win keeps Warnervale’s slim hopes of a Finals berth alive but they must win nearly all their remaining fixtures from now on. But besides that, the club would be most happy with this result. Best players for Warnervale were back Jacob Griffin, Sione Tonga and Dean Crofsky. Avoca Beach was best served by Mitch Jacob, newcomer to Premier 1 Alex Halls, hooker Fion Henderson-Foley, and Blake Jacob. Avoca Beach remains in fifth spot but will need to get those vital wins soon if they are to return to the Top Four.
Gosford convincingly defeated Woy Woy at Woy Woy Oval to the tune of 51 points to 15. It was totally Gosford’s match and they controlled things from the start to the finish. Woy Woy were never in the first 40 minutes and Gosford almost ran at random during that period. By halftime Gosford had jumped to match winning 31 points to nil lead and the match was all but over even at that stage. The match continued in much the same vein early in the second half. Woy Woy did get going a little in the second half when they crossed for 2 tries but it was all too late. Gosford ran in 8 tries to the home team’s 2 to emphatically record an important win for them. Gosford remain in third spot on the competition ladder. Woy Woy would be most disappointed with their performance after such a great effort last Saturday against Kariong. Best players for Gosford were winger Michael Jones, flanker Sean Anzelark, lock Alex Corcoran and centre Josh McGlynn. Best for the home team were five-eight Damon Boxswell and halfback Zac Doak-Stride.
Kariong secured a tight win in President’s Cup when they defeated The Entrance by 19 points to 12 at Kariong Oval. This was a hard fought clash from start to finish.
Women’s 7’s rugby saw several hard fought clashes yesterday. Wins to Terrigal, The Lakes and Avoca Beach resulted in some exciting women’s rugby across the Central Coast.
