REPORT :
The fifth last round in Central Coast Rugby Union yesterday proved the most interesting this year. As the competition builds towards the Finals Series all teams are trying their best to make their mark on this year’s competition. Some teams are trying to reach the Finals while others are simply trying to perform well in their remaining few matches.
The Match of the Day yesterday saw Terrigal prove too strong for Gosford at Gosford Showground and ran out winners by 45 points to 19. Terrigal proved dominant right from the opening whistle. They were quick to the breakdown and their backline showed poise and speed to get over the advantage line on numerous occasions. Terrigal opened the scoring with a converted try and it did control proceedings in the opening minutes. Gosford did respond however with a very good 50 metre try of their own to level the scores at 7 all early in the match. However it was in the middle stages of the first half that Terrigal really did play some very effective rugby. As a result of this play they crossed for three further tries in this period to take a very handy lead of 26 points to 7. At that stage it seemed all was over unless Gosford responded quickly. Both teams did score a try each in the final minutes of the first half for Terrigal to go to the halftime break leading by 33 points to 12. It did prove a match winning lead. Terrigal deserved the lead and Gosford were finding it hard to find any answers to their attack. Best players for Terrigal were flankers Sam Kenny and Ryan Metcalfe, five-eight Jayden Woolley, outside centre Arana Taumata and lock Will McDonald. Gosford were trying everything to stay in the match. Their best players on the day included forwards Vince Stewart and Jackson Steinbeck, Adam Carlisle, in his 300th Premier 1 match, and centre Josh McGlynn. The second half was a far more even affair with some pleasing rugby on display. Terrigal did only score 2 tries to one in the final 40 minutes but their first half performance did cement their final victory. The win sees Terrigal firmly placed in second spot on the competition ladder with 4 weeks remaining the competition.
The match at Heazlett Park between Avoca Beach and The Lakes ended in a 37 all draw. It was certainly a cliff- hanger. There was absolutely nothing in this match throughout, obviously on the scoreboard and on the paddock. The Lakes led at halftime by the narrow margin of 21 points to 17 and play continued in much the same vein in the last 40 minutes. This draw leaves Avoca Beach in fourth spot on the competition ladder but only the one point in front of The Lakes in fifth spot. It will be real tussle between these two teams from here on in to see who qualifies for the semi-finals this year. This match proved there is nothing between them in this race. It was an enthralling game at Heazlett, and certainly the crowd on hand were on edge for the entire 80 minutes. Best players for Avoca Beach were back Mitch Jacob, prop Luke Sheridan, and Zac Montgomery in his first appearance in the top grade. The Lakes had several good performers also. None were better than their fullback Macui Raulini, who crossed for 2 tries, Eddie Vuniwawa and Noah Halapipi. Avoca Beach did score 5 tries to 4 but good goal kicking kept The Lakes on an even keel on the scoreboard. The remaining four rounds this season makes for an interesting struggle between these two teams for the Finals.
The other two matches on Coast yesterday were very close. Kariong defeated Hornsby by 27 points to 24 at Kariong Oval. There was nothing in this match also for the entire 80 minutes. Hornsby did actually score 4 tries to 3 but the goal kicking of Kariong flanker Lachlan Peruch kept them in the match and in front on the scoreboard. Kariong led by the narrow margin of 14 points to 12 at the halftime break and they were able to maintain that difference for the remainder of the match. Hornsby would be most disappointed in the final result and for the second week in a row they have been close but not close enough at the end of the day. Best players for Kariong were Lachlan Peruch, Ryan Wallbank, and Jayden Stanley. Hornsby were best served by Toby Forde, who crossed for two individual tries, Tevita Palu, and Sossasia Akaveka.
The other close match was at Woy Woy Oval which saw Warnervale hang on for a narrow 29 points to 24 win over the home side Woy Woy. Like the game above, the losing side scored more tries on the day but lost the match. Woy Woy scored 4 tries to Warnervale’s 3 but it was excellent goal kicking by Warnervale’s Cameron McNamara that kept them in the match and in front at fulltime. The match was very even in the first half and Warnervale went to the halftime break with only a narrow lead of 14 points to 12 so it was all up for grabs in the final 40 minutes. Best players for Warnervale were back Ben Butler, Brenton Acreman, Cameron McNamara and Jared Pomare. Woy Woy went close to getting the win but it was not to be. Best players for the home side were Fokolulu Taumololo and Jackson Dewar, who both scores a pair of tries each, and Luke McIntyre.
Ourimbah secured a comfortable win in President’s Cup when they defeated The Entrance by 54 points to 7 at Joseph Banks Oval.
Women’s 7’s rugby saw some hard fought clashes over the weekend. Wins to Avoca Beach, Hornsby and Woy Woy saw these three teams help secure their positions in the semi-finals.
