REPORT :
The Central Coast Rugby Union competition continued with all matches
resulting in some exciting rugby. The Match of the Day at Heazlett Park saw
Ourimbah hang on to defeat Avoca Beach by 34 points to 26. In a see-sawing
match both teams had their periods in the lead only to see the scores change quite
regularly throughout the 80 minutes. It was an exciting game of rugby from start to
finish and it was a very pleasing game of rugby for those in attendance. There was
nothing in this match on the scoreboard even though Ourimbah did score 6 tries to
three in the match. It was some very good goal kicking by Avoca Beach’s Shaun
Townsend that kept the home team very much in the picture. The first half was a very even affair. It was Avoca Beach who went to the halftime break leading by 21 points to 19 after they scored a converted try right on the halftime whistle. Both teams were putting everything into the clash – it was hard, tough rugby. The second half continued in much the same way with both teams throwing everything at each other. However it was Ourimbah who outlasted the home side in what was another win for the Ourimbah outfit. However it was Ourimbah’s closest contest of the year and things were certainly tight for the entire 80 minutes. Ourimbah had several very good performers. On top of the list was lock Josefa Biu, who crossed for 2 tries, Jarrod Grange, Jack Sheahan and Kaitu Kausana. Best for Avoca Beach on the day were Fion Henderson-Foley, Shaun Townsend, Matt Anderson and Mitch Jacob. Ourimbah continue to lead the competition while Avoca Beach, even though dropping out of the Top Four, know they can return there based on this performance.
Warnervale secured a significant victory when they defeated Kariong by 21 points to 12 at Woongarrah Oval No.1 yesterday. This match was also even stevens for much of the 80 minutes. Neither team could get ahead to any significant extent in the first half. The two teams went to the halftime break locked at 7 points apiece so obviously the match was certainly up for grabs from that point on. The second half continued to be hard fought and evenly contested. Warnervale did however score 2 tries to one in the final 40 minutes to grab the win. The win keeps Warnervale in contention for the Finals but they will have to keep winning from now on in. Best players for Warnervale were Jacob Griffin and Mitch Reilly in the backs, while winger Atunisia Turagabeci scored yet another try this season. It was an impressive win by the home side where the whole team played as a unit. On the other hand Kariong would be most disappointed with the result after performing quite well last week in the night game against Terrigal. Best for Kariong were Lachlan Peruch, Nick Farrell and Jai Clack.
Gosford defeated Hornsby by 33 points to 26 in what proved quite an even affair at Woongarrah Oval No.2. Hornsby got away to the better start in this match and midway through the first half they had jumped to a 14 points to 7 lead. However by halftime Gosford had regained the ascendancy and went to the break leading by 26 points to 14. It seemed at that stage the Gosford team had things firmly in control after coming from behind and taking a very handy lead. However the second half saw Hornsby push Gosford the whole way. In fact the second stanza saw Hornsby outscore Gosford to the tune of 12 points to 7 but they could not make up the leeway that Gosford had established in the first half. Best for Gosford were five-eight Adam Carlisle, lock Alec Corcoran and forward Daniel Glaves. Hornsby were best served by Wes Faupula and Leone Naisaorotaboa, who together scored all Hornsby’s tries. Gosford maintain third position on the table with some important matches coming up over the next few weeks. Hornsby would be happy with the performance despite the loss and will take a lot from this contest.
The Lakes returned to the Top Four with a resounding 54 points to 17 win over Woy Woy at Woy Woy Oval. It was a most convincing performance from start to finish and they certainly showed what their backline can do when supplied with a good supply of steady ball. They jumped to a 21 points to 0 lead early in the match before Woy Woy hit back late in the half with two very good tries. The Lakes went to the halftime break leading by 21 points to 12 so despite the good start the visitors knew they had a battle on their hands. However The Lakes commenced the second half just like the first. They crossed for another three converted tries and very early on in the second stanza had jumped to a match winning lead of 42 points to 12. It was a very good performance by The Lakes and the win puts them into fourth spot on the competition ladder. Woy Woy had their moments in the match were never really in the contest. Best for The Lakes were five-eight Marshall Hemopo, Peni Raulini, halfback Logan Hemopo, and Noah Halaapiapi, who crossed for 3 individual tries. Best for Woy Woy were lock Kane Burns, halfback Zach Doak-Stride, and centre Fokolulu Taumololo, who crossed for 2 tries.
At The Haven Oval, in the President’s Cup, Terrigal defeated The Entrance by 27 points to 10. This was a very solid win by Terrigal and cements their position near the top of the competition ladder.
Women’s 7’s rugby saw Avoca Beach, The Lakes, Woy Woy, Warnervale and Kariong all secure very good victories in their respective matches on Saturday. The highlight of the day was Kariong’s first win of the season.
