REPORT :
In the Premier 1 Minor Semi-final at Woy Woy Oval, Gosford defeated The
Lakes by 29 points to 14. In a match that never really rose to any great heights it
was a match that developed into a war of attrition for large parts of the contest.
After a quite even opening few minutes it was Gosford who opened the scoring in the 6th minute of play. A converted try saw Gosford jump to a 7 points to 0 lead very early on. It was the start that they wanted. Gosford were having the better of play in this opening stage of the clash. They increased their lead in the 15th minute when they crossed for their second converted try. This 14 points to nil lead was deserved at that stage. The middle stages of the first half however developed into an arm wrestle and was proving a very even contest. Both teams had further chances to score but probably more so The Lakes. They attacked the Gosford line for long periods in the first half but dropped ball and forced passes, saw opportunities to score go wanting. It was a quite frustrating period for The Lakes’ attack. However they did cross for a try
five minutes before halftime to get their scoring going. This scoreline of 14 points to 7 was the score at halftime so both teams knew they were well and truly in this clash. The second half continued in much the same vein. Both teams were trying to cement the win but errors at the wrong time were affecting both teams. However, Gosford did make things safer when they crossed for their third try very early in the second half. This score of 21 points to 7 was a handy lead even at this stage of the match. Gosford then scored their fourth try in the 22nd minute of the second stanza and they all but had the win secure at that stage when they led by 26 points to 7. Gosford were taking their chances while The Lakes were being frustrated by missed chances. Gosford had several good players in the match. Players such as flanker Sean Anzelark, centre Lenny Van der Velde, lock Alec Corcoran and prop Jonah Manuao were leading from the front and were making inroads into The Lakes defence. Best players for The Lakes were No. 8 Peni Raulini, flanker Paul Wilson and five-eight Marshall Hemopo. The Lakes never stopped trying. They scored a try in the 31st minute and with score 26 -14 they threw everything at Gosford to try to bridge the gap. However it was not to be. A penalty goal late in the match to Gosford sealed the victory with the final score being Gosford 29 The Lakes 14. Gosford move on further into the Finals and will play the loser of next week’s Major Semi-final in the Preliminary Final in 2 weeks time. The Lakes would be disappointed with the result but not with their season. They made the Finals and competed well all year.
The Lakes recorded a most convincing win in the Premier 2 Minor Semi-final when they defeated Gosford by 46 points to 10. The Lakes were always in control. They scored their first try early on in the match and then were able to regularly post tries throughout the remainder of the contest. Gosford simply had no answer to their play. The Lakes went to the halftime break leading by 26 points to 5 and had all but secured the win even at that stage. They continued to attack in the second half and were able to post a further 20 points in the second stanza. Best for The Lakes were fullback Alec Herridge, who scored a personal tally of 21 points, prop Jack Akehurst, halfback Liam Baker and lock Chad Goodhand. Gosford were best served by No.8 Wes Bull and centre Richie Cully.
Avoca Beach were able to win the President’s Cup Minor Semifinal defeating The Lakes by 21 points to 12. Avoca Beach scored early in the match with a try and a penalty goal and this lead of 8 points to nil early on held them in good stead for the remainder of the match. Avoca Beach went on to lead by 18 points to 5 at the halftime break so they obviously went into the second half full of confidence. The final half saw a real arm wrestle with The Lakes outscoring Avoca Beach by 7 points to 3 but it was all too late for them. Avoca Beach continue on while The Lakes hang up their boots for another season.
In what proved a one sided clash Avoca Beach defeated Gosford in the Under 19 Minor Semifinal by 40 points to 7. Avoca Beach scored their first try in the opening minutes before Gosford responded with their one try in the match. The Gosford lead was very short-lived as Avoca Beach quickly gained control in the match and went on to record a most convincing victory. Gosford never stopped trying but it was all in vain It is Avoca Beach who continue on to the Preliminary Final.
The Women’s 7’s Minor Semi-final saw Woy Woy prove too strong for Hornsby and ran out winners by 20 points to 5. The match was won by Woy Woy in the first half when they crossed for 3 tries to lead at the break by 15 points to nil. Both teams scored a try in the second half but it was Woy Woy who move on into the Preliminary Final. Hornsby women were the first team from their club to compete in the CCRU Finals and would have enjoyed the experience despite the loss.
