REPORT :
The seaside derby at Heazlett Park, in the Match of the Day, saw Terrigal easily account for Avoca Beach by 59 points to 13. In front of an enthusiastic crowd, Terrigal took control of the match almost from the opening whistle and were never headed in the contest. The first 40 minutes had Terrigal in control of both territory and possession. In fact by halftime they had jumped to a comfortable 26 points to 6 lead and things seemed almost a foregone conclusion in the match even at that stage. Terrigal were playing some very strong rugby and both their attack and defence were on song. Best players for Terrigal at this stage were lock Josh Vainikolo, who crossed for 2 tries, Alex Brewin and back Jayden Woolley. But it was their whole team who were playing well. Avoca Beach were trying everything to stay in touch but it just proved too difficult to do so. The story was much the same in the second half. Terrigal continued to dominate and they were able to post a further 33 points in the final 40 minutes. The form of Terrigal is an ominous sign heading to the Finals. Avoca Beach never stopped trying. In fact they were rewarded with a try near fulltime but it was all too late for the home team. Best players for Avoca Beach were Harrison Bowcock, Alex Halls, and prop Jake McPhie. Terrigal, with this win, cement themselves in second spot on the competition ladder and can now start preparing for the Major Semi-final in 4 weeks time. Avoca Beach, with the loss, are now in a struggle with The Lakes and Warnervale for fourth spot on the ladder.
Warnervale caused a minor upset when they defeated Gosford at Woongarrah Oval by 24 points to 21. This was a quite even affair throughout. Gosford opened the scoring with a converted try but Warnervale quickly responded with heir own converted try to make the score 7 all midway through the first half. Gosford did take some control of the match late in the first half when they crossed for two further tries to go to the halftime break leading by 21 points to 7. This was a handy lead in the match but Gosford however were unable to post any further points in the second half. On the other hand, Warnervale were able to score 3 tries in the final 40 minutes to clinch the match. Gosford led by 21 points to 19 with time running out but Warnervale crossed for their match winning fourth try right on fulltime. The win sees Warnervale still with a chance of making the Top Four while Gosford, while disappointed with the result, know they have cemented third spot on the competition ladder. It all makes for a very interesting final two rounds in the competition to see which club actually locks in fourth position on the ladder. The best players for Warnervale were fullback Ben Butler, who crossed for 2 tries in the second half, and centre Scott Fitzpatrick. Best for Gosford was lock Alec Corcoran and five-eight Adam Carlisle.
The Lakes came from behind to defeat Hornsby by 36 points to 19 at Mark Taylor Oval. This match was definitely one of two halves. The first half saw Hornsby in control. They went to the halftime break leading by 19 points to 5 and everything appeared to be in their favour. It was not the position The Lakes needed to be in but Hornsby demonstrated some fine rugby to take this handy lead. However the second half was a totally different ball game. The Lakes responded with 31 points in the second half while Hornsby remained scoreless. It was an amazing turn around both on the paddock and on the scoreboard. The Lakes certainly needed the win as they are now in clear fourth spot on the competition ladder but know they have teams looming just behind them. Best players for The Lakes were halfback Logan Hemopo, fullback Macui Raulini and Latham Walters. Best for Hornsby were backs Harry Fox, Leone Naisaorotaboa and Sam White.
Ourimbah continued on their winning ways with a strong win over Kariong at Kariong Oval, running out victors by 53 points to 5. Ourimbah got away to a great start and were never headed. In fact, by halftime, Ourimbah led by 34 points to 5 and the match was already secured away at that stage. Kariong simply had no answer to the Ourimbah attack. Ourimbah showed why they have gone through the season undefeated and showed why they are the Premiership favourites leading into the Finals. The win also puts them in good stead for their big clash next Saturday against fellow frontrunners Terrigal. Ourimbah were good all day. Best players for them were Mavae Muru Teutau, who crossed for 3 individual tries, halfback Matt King, and prop Jordan Clark. However it was a good all round performance by the whole team. Best for Kariong were Ricky Walter, and flankers Lachlan Peruch and Josh Bottero.
Woy Woy defeated The Entrance in President’s Cup by 24 points to 17 in a close match at Joseph Banks Oval.
Women’s 7’s rugby continued to enthral on the Central Coast. Terrigal confirmed their status as Premiership favourites when they accounted for last year’s Premiers Avoca Beach. The Lakes also continued their improving form when they defeated Hornsby.
