REPORT :
Round 2 saw some very exciting games of rugby played right across the Central Coast. The Match of the Day at Slade Park saw The Lakes sneak home in an extremely tight match over Avoca Beach by the narrowest of margins, by 15 points to 14. It was close throughout. The Lakes got away to the better start, kicking an early penalty goal and then following this up with a converted try take a lead of 10 points to nil lead at the midway point of the first half. The match was played in wet conditions but this did not dampen the enthusiasm of the players but did lead to quite a lot of dropped ball. Avoca Beach fought back late in the first half with two penalty goals to their fullback Shaun Townsend and at the half time break The Lakes only led by 10 points to 6. This score line was made even tighter when Avoca Beach kicked their third penalty goal to make the score 10-9. The match was up for grabs at that stage. The final stages were evenly fought. Both teams crossed for a single try apiece to make the final score 15-14. Best players for The Lakes were Tomi Kaati, Zac McGuiness and Nick Valentine. Avoca Beach were best served by hooker Fionn Henderson-Foley and fullback Shawn Townsend. Both teams will take a lot from the clash and the result proves that these two teams will be in the reckoning at the end of the year.
Hornsby opened up their season with a convincing win over Kariong at Mark Taylor Oval, running out victors by 41 points to 10. Hornsby were in control almost from the opening whistle. They led early and then went to the halftime break with a handy 17 points to 3 lead. They were playing some very constructive rugby and were always dangerous with the ball in hand. However it was in the second half that Hornsby really asserted its dominance. They posted a further 24 points to secure the win. The 7 tries to one score line does indicate the difference in the two teams on the day. Best for Hornsby were lock Wes Faupula, while Tuihakavalu Ika, No.8 James McCarthy and fullback Leone Naisorotab all scored 2 tries apiece for the home side. Kariong never stopped trying but it was just not going to be their day. Best for Kariong were flankers Josh Bottero and Christian Whitfield as well as Lachlan Peruch. Hornsby showed they will be a threat for all teams this year.
Terrigal continued on their winning way with a 31 points 13 win over Gosford at The Haven Oval. It was great to see Gosford back in Premier 1 and they certainly made their impact in this match. They put in a real full hearted performance and worried the Terrigal outfit for most of the match. Gosford got away to a great start and had posted two tries early in the match to take a 10 points to nil lead. Terrigal did score a converted try close to halftime, with Gosford going to the halftime beak leading by 10 points to 7. Gosford still led by 13 points to 12 well into the second half. Gosford were playing some pleasing rugby and certainly showed they will trouble teams for the remainder of the year. Terrigal gradually wore down Gosford and were able to cross for several late tries to eventually post a quite comfortable victory. Best for Terrigal were lock Josh Vainikolo and flanker Sam Kenny while for Gosford veteran Adam Carlisle made his mark at five-eight as did Ben Shelley at halfback. Terrigal showed why they are Premiership favourites with their 80 minute effort but Gosford also showed they do belong in Premier 1.
Warnervale scored their first win of the season when they accounted for Woy Woy at Woongarrah Oval by 18 points to 10. Warnervale only led by 7 points to 3 at the halftime break and so at that stage it was anybody’s match. The home side did increase this lead early in the second stanza and led by 15 points to 3 at the 60 minute mark of the match. Woy Woy never stopped trying however. They fought back to get the score to 15 -10 but a late penalty goal to Warnervale secured them the win. There was not too much between these two teams for the entire 80 minutes. Best for Warnervale were No.8 Cameron McNamara, Kye Haslem and Sione Branxton. Woy Woy were best served by backs Wade Hannell and Junior Stowers.
Women’s 10’s rugby saw some exciting clashes over the weekend. Although only 4 teams were in action, there was plenty of action on the paddock. Hornsby easily accounted for Kariong, while Woy Woy had a close win over Warnervale.
