REPORT :
After a long wait, the Central Coast Rugby Union season finally kicked off. The first round saw one close battle while the other two matches saw quite convincing wins to the away team.
The Match of the Day between Warnervale and Ourimbah was a close one throughout. Ourimbah held on to win by 29 points to 19 at Woongarah Oval after the home side seriously gave the visitors a scare during the final quarter of the match. The first half was a quite even affair but it was Ourimbah who went to the halftime break leading by 15 points to 5. With the limited preparation that all teams had this year, both teams did put on a good display of rugby. However it was always Ourimbah that keep in front on the scoreboard. Both teams had some good players in this first 40 minutes. Best for Ourimbah were No.8 Rob Peden, who crossed for a try in the match, lock Josefa Biu, who played his usual strong game, and five-eight Dan Jones. Best for Warnervale were prop Lachlan Natapu, flanker Kye Haslem and No.8 Cameron McNamara. The second half continued in much the same vein as the first. In fact both teams were able to post 14 points each to their score in the second stanza. Warnervale got very close on the scoreboard late in the second half but it was the visitors who were able to post some vital late points to secure the win. Both teams will take a lot from this clash and things do look good for both teams this year.
The Lakes showed great form when they defeated Kariong by 62 points to 24 at Kariong Oval. This was a very free flowing match with the attack from both teams the main feature. The Lakes basically won this match in the first half when they went to the halftime break leading by a massive 41 points to nil. It was 40 minutes of rugby where The Lakes forward pack was strong and their backline extremely dangerous. The Lakes always looked dangerous with the ball in hand and were able to cross for continual tries in the first 40 minutes. The second half saw Kariong finally kick into gear and actually outscored The Lakes in the final 40 minutes by 24 points to 21 but it was all far too late. In fact Kariong looked the more dangerous late in the match but they could not reduce the gap that The Lakes had created in the first half. The whole team played well for the visitors but the best for The Lakes on the day were Peni Raulini, Epi Vurle, Logan Hemopo, and Macui Raulini. Kariong were best served by No.8 Lachlan Peruch, who never stopped all day, Tyson Potger, who crossed for 2 tries, and Aiden Chambers. Like the match above, and despite the score, both teams will take much from the match and can expect a good season ahead.
Terrigal convincingly defeated Woy Woy at Woy Woy Oval by 70 points to nil. Terrigal crossed for 10 tries in the match, and five-eight Adam Danckert converted all 10 tries. The first quarter of the match was a very even affair with neither team giving an inch. However after this early, evenly contested period, the Terrigal team sprung into action and Woy Woy simply had no answer to the visitor attack. Terrigal went to the halftime break leading by 35 points to nil, and were able to post the same number of points in the second half. Terrigal were very good and showed why even at this early stage of the season they are the competition frontrunners. They worked well as a unit for the whole 80 minutes. Woy Woy were far from disgraced and they know they played last year’s Premiers first up and they will get stronger as the year progresses. They never stopped trying for the entire 80 minutes. Best for Terrigal were five-eight Adam Danckert, who posted 25 individual points in the match, centre Arana Taumata and prop James Hall. Woy Woy were best served by back Wade Hannell who gave everything all day.
Women’s 10’s rugby saw some exciting clashes over the weekend. Although only 4 teams played, there was plenty of action on the paddock. Terrigal easily accounted for Woy Woy, while Warnervale had a great start to their season with a win over Ourimbah.
