REPORT :
The Central Coast Rugby Union competition continued with some most interesting results. In this round of rugby, the results demonstrated the evenness of this year’s competition and simply showed that one of many teams can win this year’s Premiership. It was an exciting and enthralling round of rugby.
On what was a very cold and windy day, this round of rugby saw a draw, some very close matches and contests of the highest quality.
The Match of the Day at Slade Park saw a titanic tussle from start to finish in a match that resulted in a 31 all draw between The Lakes and Ourimbah. The score line seesawed throughout and maybe the draw was the most appropriate result in this match. Ourimbah got away to a great start and it was not too long in the match that they were in the lead by the very handy 14 points to nil. But what became typical in the match, The Lakes fought back to square up the match at the midway point of the first half. But then once again Ourimbah took of on the scoreboard and by halftime, Ourimbah had regained the lead and led at the break by 24 points to 14. It was proving a most exciting and intense game of rugby. The second half saw the match continue in the same vein but once again it was the home side The Lakes that fought back to even the score. Both teams went neck and neck for the final 40 minutes and by fulltime they could not be separated on the scoreboard. Best players for Ourimbah were flanker Jimmy Cunynghame, winger Jack Stonestreet and prop Stephen Finley, while halfback Matt King and lock Josefa Biu were both able to cross for 2 tries apiece. Best players for The Lakes included halfback Logan Hemopo, lock Peni Rauuni, winger Fillimona Seru and centre Ishaq kali Meehan. The quality of this match and the end result proved that these two teams will be close to the action at Finals time.
In the upset of the round, Hornsby defeated Terrigal at The Haven Oval by 19 points to 9 in one of the best games of rugby on the Coast for quite awhile. There was action from start to finish and both teams gave it their all. The first half was a totally even struggle and by halftime the scores were locked at 9 points apiece. At that stage the match was very much up for grabs. The first half was more or less a penalty shootout in that neither team was able to break through for those vital tries. Great defence from both teams saw no tries scored in the first 40 minutes. Three penalty goals to both teams was the only points scoring in the first half. The second half saw Hornsby able to score 10 points to Terrigal’s’ nil in what proved a surprising situation to most spectators. But it was Hornsby who were playing the good structured rugby. The visitors crossed for two tries in this period and they were the only points scored in the second half of the match. Best players for Hornsby were lock Wes Faupula and flanker Tevita Piukala, who both crossed for those two vital tries in the second half. But basically the whole Hornsby team played well for that team to gain their best result since the club joined the Central Coast competition. Terrigal were best served by fullback Adam Danckert and flanker Elekana Laupola. The win by Hornsby also saw the team take home the Challenge Shield which Terrigal has held since 2018 as they have not lost a home game since then. It was a great day for Hornsby. Like the match above, these two teams will be in the middle of the action at Finals time.
Avoca Beach also proved that they will be in contention for the big games at the end of the season when they defeated Warnervale by 43 points to 15 at Haezlett Park. The first half was a tight struggle with not too much between the two teams on the scoreboard. Avoca Beach led early but Warnervale were not to be kept out of the action. In fact, by halftime Avoca Beach only led by 17 points to 15 and it was anyone’s match at that stage. However the second half was all Avoca Beach. The home side was playing some very good rugby and Warnervale had no answer to this attack. Avoca Beach were able to post 26 points in the second half while Warnervale were unable to respond. It was a most dominant half by Avoca Beach. Best players for Avoca Beach were locks Aiden King and Harry Layton, and centre Alex Halls, who scored two tries. Warnervale were best served by hooker Cameron McNamara, who scored both his team’s tries – in fact, all their points – and No.8 Jacob Griffin. The win sees Avoca Beach now placed in fifth spot, but close to the leading teams, while Warnervale have it all to do to make the Finals this year.
Gosford proved too strong for Woy Woy at Gosford Showground, running out winners by 31 points to 21. However, they certainly did not have it all their way. Gosford led early in the match, in fact by the midway point of the first half were leading by 10 points to 7. However Woy Woy had the better of the latter stages of the first half and actually took the lead by 14 points to 10. Gosford did cross for a converted try near halftime to go to the break leading by 17 points to 14 so both teams were certainly in the picture at that time. The second half saw plenty of action on the paddock, but it was Gosford who were to score 5 tries to 3 in the match. This statistic was probably a true indication of the flow of the match. Best players for Gosford were Under 19 prop Sulivenusi Hakalo, No.8 Sean Anlezark and halfback Ben Shelley. Woy Woy had several good players however Junior Stowers, Wade Hannell and Joel Frazer were never far from the action.
Women’s 10’s rugby continued with two excellent matches. Both matches were hard fought and close. Hornsby scored an upset win over Terrigal, while Avoca Beach recorded a good victory over Warnervale.
