REPORT :
The Premier 1 Major Semi-final saw Terrigal defeat The Lakes by 33 points to 14. The match was played under lights at Woy Woy Oval and it proved to be typical Finals rugby. The first half was a dour battle with neither team willing to give any favours to the opposition. Terrigal did open the scoring very early on when they crossed for a try in the 4th minute of the match but for the next 20 minutes no further points were posted. Both teams had periods of attack while good defence seemed to be the operative format. However gradually it was Terrigal who were gaining the slight ascendancy. They scored their second try midway through the first half and then kicked a further two penalty goals to five-eight Adam Danckert to go to a very handy 18 points to nil lead late in the half. They had gained control of most territory and were being rewarded with points on the board. Things were certainly looking ominous for The Lakes team. However right on halftime they gave themselves some hope when they crossed for a converted try to make the halftime score Terrigal 18 The Lakes 7. The second half continued in much the same vein. However it was Terrigal who were playing the right style of Finals rugby and with a further penalty goal and then another try in the 14th minute, Terrigal had taken a lead of 26 points to 7. The Lakes still tried everything to get back into the match but it just was not to be. Terrigal cemented the win in the 20th minute of the second half when a further converted try had taken them to an unassailable lead of 33 points to 7. The Lakes, like the first half, scored right on the hooter to make the final score 33 points to 14. But the match had gone. Best players for Terrigal were lock Will McDonald, No.8 Josh Vainikolo and flanker Sam Kenny. The Lakes had several good performers but none were better than fullback Macui Rauluni and forward James McCombie. Terrigal continue on the Grand Final at Central Coast Stadium in two weeks time, while The Lakes get a second chance when they meet Ourimbah in the Preliminary Final next Saturday at Woy Woy Oval.
In the Premier 1 elimination Minor Semi-final at Woy Woy Oval, Ourimbah came from behind to defeat Hornsby by 32 points to 26. This proved to be an intense and very exciting game of rugby. Hornsby definitely had the better of the first half and they were able to take the early lead. Both teams had periods of attack but it was Hornsby who were putting the points on the board. An early try to the strong running centre Tuihakavalu Ika, and three very good penalty goals had taken Hornsby to a very handy 16 points to 0 lead late into the first half. It was windy and Hornsby did have the breeze behind them but their style of rugby was simply not allowing Ourimbah any leeway. Both teams had disallowed tries in the first half, and the match was one that went from one end of the field to the other. Ourimbah posted their first points right on halftime when they kicked a penalty goal to make the halftime score 16 to 3. Hornsby continued to control things early in the second half and in the 7thminute of this half they crossed for another converted try. The Hornsby lead of 23 points to 3 seemed comfortable and one that Ourimbah may have found insurmountable. However from the midway point of the second half Ourimbah suddenly started to find their legs. Whereas they were having trouble at scrum time early on, it was now becoming in strong point in their game. They scored a try to halfback Matt King and it was largely due to his penetrative runs that Ourimbahfound themselves looking far more aggressive. Matt King did score three tries and was certainly the best player on the paddock. Ourimbah scored tries in the 11th, 25th, 30th and 34th minutes to suddenly change the match. That final try to lock Josefa Biu saw Ourimbah complete the comeback and take the lead by 29 points to 26. A late penalty sealed the victory for them. This match was certainly not for the faint hearted. Ourimbah had escaped with the win and will now continue on and will meet The Lakes next Saturday in the Preliminary Final to see who plays Terrigal in the Grand Final. Hornsby would be most disappointed. They gained a great lead but simply could not hang on for the victory on the day.
The Lakes recorded a very close win in the Premier 2 Major Semi-final when they defeated Terrigal by 15 points to 10. There was absolutely nothing in this match throughout. In fact the first half went point for point and the half time score was locked up at 10 points apiece. The Lakes then scored the only try in the second half to break that deadlock. It was a classical game of rugby and in some ways the most intense match of the day. The Lakes did score 3 tries to one and because of that deserved the win. But it would be Terrigal who would rue their chances late in the match they could have seen them take the match. The Lakes go straight to the Grand Final while Terrigal have to face Avoca Beach next Saturday in the Preliminary Final so see if they get another chance to take on The Lakes.
Avoca Beach was able to win the President’s Cup Major Semi-final defeating The Lakes by 26 points to 10. Avoca Beach scored early in the match with two tries and this lead of 12 points to nil early on held them in good stead for the remainder of the match. Avoca Beach went on to lead by 19 points to 0 at the halftime break so they obviously went into the second half full of confidence. The final half saw a real arm wrestle with The Lakes outscoring Avoca Beach by 10 points to 7 but it was all too late for them. Avoca Beach continues on to the Grand Final while The Lakes take on Terrigal next Saturday in the Preliminary Final to see who goes to the big one.
In what proved a one sided clash Avoca Beach defeated The Lakes Maroon in the Under 19 Major Semi-final by 46 points to 7. Avoca Beach scored their first try in the opening minutes before The Lakes Maroon responded with their one try in the match. From this point on however Avoca Beach quickly gained control in the match and went on to record a most convincing victory. Avoca Beach led by 26 point to 7 at halftime and then posted a further 20 points in the second half. The Lakes Maroon will need to play again next Saturday in the Preliminary Final to see if they get a chance to go through to the Grand Final. It is Avoca Beach who now continues on straight to the Grand Final.
The Women’s 10’s Major Semi-final saw Terrigal prove too strong for Hornsby and ran out winners by 29 points to 15. The match was won by Terrigal in the first half when they crossed for 4 tries to lead at the break by 24 points to nil. The second half was far more even affair but all the damage had been done in the first half. Terrigal continue to the Grand Final while next Saturday Hornsby plays Avoca Beach in the Preliminary Final.
