REPORT :
The final round in Central Coast Rugby Union competition for 2020 saw the Top 5 in Premier 1 finally settled. The semi-finalists for this year were only finally sorted out in the final matches of the season.
The Match of the Day at Woy Woy Oval saw Terrigal cement the Minor Premiership when they defeated Avoca Beach by 36 points to 19. It was a hard fought and physical encounter throughout and neither team backed off for the entire 80 minutes. Terrigal opened the scoring with a penalty goal to five-eight Adam Danckert, and then soon after increased their lead to 10 points to nil when winger Dan Sargeant crossed for a converted try. It was Terrigal who were dominating the early stages of the match. Terrigal went further ahead on the scoreboard when centre Arana Taumata crossed for his team’s second try and the 15 points to nil lead to Terrigal was certainly the start they wanted. However Avoca Beach was not to be thwarted. They scored their first try close to halftime for the halftime score to be Terrigal 15 Avoca Beach 5. Terrigal continued to control things in the early parts of the second half. They were able to cross for further tries in the early part of that half and their lead of 36 points to 5, well into the second half, was enough to secure them the victory. However Avoca Beach never gave up. They continued to fight hard and were able to post two late tries in an attempt to grab a bonus point. Terrigal had several very good players but none were better than five-eight Adam Danckert, centre Arana Taumata, No.8 Josh Vainikolo and winger Richard Hooper, who crossed for 2 tries. Terrigal, with this vital win, secured the Minor Premiership and now have a week’s rest in the first week of the Final Series. Avoca Beach gave their all but it was not enough on the day. They finish fifth on the competition ladder and will now face Hornsby in next week’s elimination semi-final. Best players for Avoca Beach were five-eight Toby Marks, hooker Fionn Henderson-Foley, and centre Josh Montgomery.
In the other highlight ‘Match of the Day’, The Lakes proved too strong for Hornsby at Slade Park, running out winners by 23 points to 5. This match was won in the first half. It was The Lakes team that dominated the first 40 minutes and they went to the halftime break leading by 20 points to nil. It was certainly the half that the home side wanted but definitely not the first 40 minutes that Hornsby needed. The Lakes were able to cross for three tries in that first half while Hornsby were simply unable to secure any points. Best players for The Lakes in the match up to this stage were fullback Macui Rauluni, hooker Tyson Watene and winger Laufiso Vaisagote – but generally the whole team played well in that first 40 minutes. The second half was a far more even affair. In fact the Hornsby team outscored The Lakes by 5 points to 3 in that final 40 minutes but all the damage for the visitors had been done in the first half. However it was a far better effort by Hornsby in the second half and will hold them in good stead for their elimination semi-final next week against Avoca Beach. Best players for Hornsby were flanker Sau Faupola, fullback Mark Roberts and lock Wes Faupola. The Lakes now play Ourimbah next Saturday to see who meets Terrigal the following week in the Major Semi-final. It should be noted that this win contributed to The Lakes winning this year’s Club Championship.
Gosford and Warnervale played out an exciting and pleasing game of rugby at Gosford Showground. Gosford won the match by 29 points to 19, but with both teams have nothing to lose, they put on a display of running rugby. Warnervale opened the scoring with a good try but it was Gosford who hit back with two quick tries. By halftime Gosford had jumped to a handy 17 points to 5 lead and things were looking good for them. Gosford did hang on for the win but it was Warnervale who outscored Gosford in the second half by 14 points to 12. There were plenty of excellent tries on offer in the match and the match was proving a real spectacle for all at the ground. Gosford finish just out of the Top Five and would rue some results earlier in the season. Best players for Gosford were No.8 Sean Anlezark, hooker Vince Stewart, fullback Cullum Simpson and centre Sam Underwood. Warnervale were best served by flankers Harry Sexton and Dean Crofskey, centre Atunaisa Turagabeci and No.8 Cameron McNamara.
Ourimbah cruised to a victory over Kariong at Ourimbah Rugby Park, running out winners by 66 points to 19. Ourimbah were always in control although it was Kariong who opened the scoring with the first try in the match. However this early lead was not to last very long. Kariong were hit hard with injuries for this encounter and it was always going to be a difficult day. However they did not stop and were able to post three tries in the match. However it was Ourimbah team who were able to cross for 10 tries and thus were able to secure the victory. Best players for Ourimbah were flanker Jarrod Grange, prop Bret Cunningham and winger Ryan Bender, while for Kariong lock Nic Outram, fullback Jye Clack and prop Richard Harvey never stopped for the whole match. Ourimbah finish second on the competition ladder and next week meet The Lakes in what will be an exciting clash.
The Women’s 10’s rugby season concluded yesterday with two very good matches. Terrigal confirmed their Finals spot were a hard fought win over rivals Avoca Beach while Kariong got their first win of the season when they upset Ourimbah.
