REPORT :
The Central Coast Rugby Union competition saw the penultimate round of rugby fail to finalise the positioning of the top 5 in Premier 1. This will all be decided in the final round next Saturday.
The Match of the Day saw a close tussle at Ourimbah Rugby Park where Terrigal hung on to defeat Ourimbah by 26 points to 20. This match was hard fought and evenly matched throughout the entire 80 minutes. Neither side was ever able to get too far away from the other. Terrigal scored the first try in the match while Ourimbah kicked a penalty goal to make the early score Terrigal 5 Ourimbah 3. Ourimbah were quick to respond and a converted try to them saw Ourimbah take the lead by 10 points to 5. However this lead was soon lost and by halftime Terrigal had regained it when they were able to cross for their own converted try. So at the break Terrigal led by the narrow margin of 12 points to 10. So obviously at this stage the match was anybody’s and so it proved to be. Ourimbah regained the lead early in the second half when they kicked a penalty goal and so they led by 13 points 12. But this lead was to be short lived. Terrigal, in the first 20 minutes of the second half, were able to cross for two very quick tries and this was enough for them to take the lead and much of the control in the encounter. So midway through the second half Terrigal had jumped to the biggest lead in the match, by 26 points to 13. This was such a good lead in what was proving an enthralling game of rugby. Ourimbah did hit back late in the match to get a further converted try but it was all too late. Best players for Terrigal on the day were flankers Tim Bowring and Sam Kenny, lock Joe Taylor, and halfback Jye Cornish. Ourimbah had several good performers in the contest. Lock Josefa Biu and five-eight Daniel Jones continued their very good recent form, while loose forwards Jarrod Grange and Rob Peden also played very well. Terrigal did score 4 tries to 2 and that fact alone may have been a good indication of the flow of the match. The win sees Terrigal leapfrog Ourimbah at the top of the competition ladder. However these two teams remain one and two going into the final round of the competition next week, and both have very tough matches in that particular round. It all makes for a very interesting end of the competition proper next Saturday.
In a minor upset Woy Woy scored late in the match to defeat Hornsby by 27 points to 25 at Woy Woy Oval. The scores in this match see sawed throughout and there was never much between these two teams on the scoreboard. Woy Woy knew it was their last match of the season and played out of their skins. They played as they had nothing to lose and put on their best performance of the year. Hornsby had the better of the first half and led throughout but it was tight. They led by 10 points to 5 midway through the first half and by halftime had maintained a lead of 15 points to 10 at the halfway point. It was proving to be gripping encounter. The scoring went neck to neck throughout the final 40 minutes. It was initially 15 all, then 22 all, before Hornsby kicked a penalty goal late in the match to take what seemed to be the winning lead of 25 points to 22. But it was not to be. Woy Woy was able to cross for the match winning try in the final moments of the match to snatch the win. Best for Woy Woy were centre Brandon Edwards, prop Viepueki Siale and lock Tyren Andrea. Hornsby’s best players on the day were No.8 Tevita Puikala, lock Sione Vuna and centre Tui Hakavalu Ika, who crossed for two individual tries. Woy Woy did score 5 tries to 3 and would have been pleased by their efforts in this, their final match of the year. It was a pleasing way for the Woy Woy team to finish their season, but Hornsby know, despite the loss, they are still in the Top 5 with an important clash next weekend.
The Lakes cemented their position in the Finals with a pleasing win over Warnervale at Woongarrah Oval by 47 points to 22. Both halves in this match were very similar. The Lakes got the better of the start of each half but in both halves Warnervale showed real heart by coming back and scoring some good tries. The Lakes led by 21 points to nil quite quickly in the match but by halftime Warnervale had fought a little to make the halftime score 21 points to 8. The same thing happened in the second half – The Lakes scored points early but Warnervale fought back and scored two very good tries late in the match. However The Lakes were always in control on the scoreboard but this match proved an interesting and pleasing one to watch. Best players for The Lakes were fullback Macui Rauluni, centre Laufisa Vaisagote, flanker Va Talevia and prop Zac McGuiness. The Lakes forward pack was strong all day and caused much damage in the set pieces. Warnervale were best served by five-eight Mitch Riley, flanker Harry Sexton, lock Michael Peebles and halfback Brenton Acreman. The win sees The Lakes take over from Hornsby in 3rd place on the ladder so their clash with Hornsby in the final round next week should be a beauty.
Avoca Beach showed great form when they easily accounted for Kariong at Kariong Oval by 76 points to nil. It was one way traffic for the Avoca Beach team for the entire 80 minutes. They played extremely well and Kariong had no answer on the day. Avoca Beach went to the halftime beak leading by 45 points to nil so the match was basically all over even at that stage. The second half continued in much the same vein and Avoca Beach piled on a further 31 points in the second stanza. Avoca Beach had several good players. Notable was winger Alex Halls, who scored 3 individual tries, lock Aiden King, and flanker Blake Jacob, who also posted 2 tries. It was not a good day for Kariong but players like lock Taylor Mildren, prop Logan Campbell and Richard Harvey never stopped trying.
Women’s 10’s rugby witnessed three very good matches on Saturday. Terrigal, Avoca Beach and Hornsby all recorded important wins and thus assured themselves of a spot in the Finals for this year.
