REPORT :
The Premier 1 Preliminary Final saw The Lakes defeat Ourimbah by 32 points to 29 at Woy Woy Oval. In what proved an enthralling match, especially in the latter stages of the contest, it was The Lakes who outlasted Ourimbah to hang on for the victory. The opening 10 minutes was a very even affair. The match was played in very warm conditions and the game was certainly going to be battle of the fittest. Ourimbah opened the scoring in the 9th minute when they kicked a penalty goal but it did not take long for The Lakes to respond. In fact two tries in the next 10 minutes saw The Lakes jump to a handy 12 points to 3 lead. The Lakes were playing some excellent attacking rugby and most things seemed to be working for them. Both teams were having their chances and there were opportunities to post further points. It was Ourimbah who scored next when they crossed for a try to reduce the lead to The Lakes 12 Ourimbah 8. The match was proving to be a real arm wrestle at this stage despite the occasional incisive run by both teams. In the last 5 minutes of the first half, a penalty goal and a converted try right on halftime to The Lakes, certainly was a turning point in the match. Suddenly The Lakes had jumped to a 22 points to 8 lead and that remained the score at halftime. The Lakes did deserve their lead at the break and were playing some adventuresome rugby. Once again Ourimbah had let the opposition get away on them in that first 40 minutes. The second half continued in a similar way. The Lakes continued to attack right from the start of this half and with a further penalty goal and another converted try, The Lakes had taken a very commanding 32 points to 8 lead after only 10 minutes of the second half. It appeared at that stage that The Lakes were safely home but once again, for the third week in a row, Ourimbah commenced their fight back. They crossed for a try to make the score 32-15 but it was not until the last 5 or so minutes of the match that they really made their move. They crossed for two late converted tries to bring the scores so close, at 32 points to 29. The Lakes however held in those last few tense moments to record a very meritorious victory. Ourimbah would be most disappointed with the result and would once again be upset at the fact that they let The Lakes take such a handy lead before they got fully into gear. Best players for The Lakes were fullback Macui Rauluni, who scored one of the best individual tries seen this year, No.8 Va Talaileva and lock Matt Lanzini. Best for Ourimbah were No.8 Rob Peden, centre Owen Turner and halfback Matt King.. The win sees The Lakes progress to the Grand Final at Central Coast Stadium next Saturday where they meet Terrigal in what should prove a gripping Grand Final.
Terrigal recorded a very close win in the Premier 2 Preliminary Final when they also just held on to defeat Avoca Beach by 27 points to 25. There was absolutely nothing in this match throughout. It was a match of two halves. However it was Terrigal who had the better of the first half and they controlled proceedings for much of that period. They took a 19 points to nil lead well into the first half and it was a only late try to Avoca Beach that made the halftime score Terrigal 24 Avoca Beach 8. The second half was controlled by Avoca Beach. They gradually kept making inroads to reduce the lead and with scores 24- 22 with time running out, it was anyone’s match. But Terrigal held on with a late penalty goal to get the victory despite being outscored 17-3 in the second half. Terrigal move onto the Grand Final next Saturday where they will meet their Major Semi-final victors, The Lakes.
Terrigal was able to win the President’s Cup Preliminary Final defeating The Lakes by 31 points to 15. The first half was very much an even struggle with both teams giving it their all in an attempt to take control in the match. Terrigal took the early lead with a penalty goal but The Lakes were never far away on the scoreboard. In fact it was The Lakes who went to the halftime break leading by 10 points to 3. Terrigal quickly squared the scores early in the second half before gradually taking control of the match. Terrigal were able to outscore The Lakes by 28 points 5 in the second half. Terrigal continue on to the Grand Final where they will take on Avoca Beach in what will be another seaside derby.
In what proved to an evenly contested match throughout, where the scores were very even all day, The Lakes Maroon defeated The Lakes Yellow in the Under 19 Preliminary Final by 25 points to 23. This was a hard fought and tightly contested game of Colts rugby, which was played at a very high standard. The Lakes Maroon led by 17 points to 11 at the halftime break, having scored 3 great tries in that first half. However never team backed off in the second half, and the scoring remained close throughout. In some ways both teams may have deserved to win but it is The Lakes Maroon who will move to the Grand Final next week where they will take on Avoca Beach.
The Women’s 10’s Preliminary Final saw Avoca Beach prove too strong for Hornsby and they ran out winners by 34 points to 10. The match was almost won by Avoca Beach in the first half when they crossed for 3 tries to lead at the break by 17 points to 5. The second half continued in much the same vein and although Hornsby put everything into the match, they simply could not post the necessary points to bridge the gap. Avoca Beach now continues on and will meet Terrigal in the Grand Final next Saturday at Central Coast Stadium.
