REPORT :
The Central Coast Rugby Union season continued with some excellent games of rugby played across the coast yesterday. In the Swietelsky Premier 1 matches, all games saw the team who got away to the early lead went on to victory.
In the Match of the Day at Ourimbah Rugby Park, Ourimbah proved far too strong for The Lakes right from the opening whistle. After a quite even opening few minutes in the match, where both teams had their chances of posting points, it was the Razorbacks who scored first. Within 8 minutes the Razorbacks had crossed for two tries, both to No.8 Rob Peden. He was certainly making his mark on the match. Both tries were under the posts so both were easily converted by flanker Jarrod Grange. This 14 points to nil lead was certainly what the home side wanted. It had put The Lakes on the back foot from which they were not to recover. The Razorbacks scored a converted try later in the first half to go to the halftime break leading by 21 points to nil. It was certainly all the Razorbacks in that first 40 minutes. The Lakes regularly were on attack and went close to scoring on several occasions, but their attack often broke down close to the line and points went begging. Best players for the Razorbacks in the match at this stage were Rob Peden, who ended up scoring 3 tries, centres Owen Turner and Dan Jones, and five-eight Pat Martin. The second stanza continued in much the same vein. The Razorbacks continued to score points while The Lakes simply just could not cross the line when needed. The Razorbacks went on to post a further 31 points in the second half to simply blot out The Lakes in the match. The Lakes never stopped trying, and two tries late in the match relieved some pressure for them. Best for The Lakes was No. 8 Sean Anlezark, while fullback Macui Rauluni was always dangerous with the ball in hand. Ourimbah proved they will be a major threat in the competition this year, while The Lakes will need to regroup after two successive losses.
Avoca Beach travelled to Kariong Oval to meet Kariong in what proved a most interesting match. Kariong held to win by 38 points to 24. Kariong got away to a great start and were able to take control in the first half of the clash. Avoca Beach did kick the opening points with a penalty goal but it was Kariong who then piled on 24 unanswered points in the remainder of the half, to lead by 24 points to 3 at the halftime break. It proved a very handy lead and also a match winning lead. The second half was a much closer affair. In fact Avoca Beach outscored the home side by 21 points to 14 but the first half blitz by Kariong was the winning difference. Avoca Beach played well in the second half and got back within striking distance, when midway through the second period there was only a converted try between the two teams. Kariong were only leading by 31 points to 24 but a late converted try sealed the win for Kariong. Best players for Kariong were lock Taylor Mildren, winger Kane Williams and prop Jackson Parkes. Five eight Mitch Clay was on fire in the opening stages of the match when he crossed for two personal tries. Avoca Beach were best served by No.8 Fion Henderson-Foley, locks Emile Thomas and Pete Steele, and halfback Ben Harding. Kariong will take a lot from this match and they proved they have Final Five hopes all over them this year.
Woongarrah Oval saw a great rugby battle in which Woy Woy just held on to record a 36 points to 31 victory over Warnervale. That score line alone indicated the closeness of the match. It was also a very tough affair with some great attack and very solid defence from both teams. Woy Woy got away to a pleasing start in the match. They led by 14 points to nil early on, and then by 21 points to 5 later in the half. By halftime, Woy Woy had confirmed their lead at 21 points to 12. They had played some excellent rugby and were certainly proving dangerous in attack. Best players for the visitors were flanker Jazper Doak-Stride and centre Junior Stowers, while winger Jim Meya crossed for 2 tries in the match. Warnervale however were not to be outdone. They had several very good performances, but none were better than centre Ethan Sant, fullback Sione Braxton and flanker Kye Haslam. They fought hard in the second half and through some great play, locked the scores up at 31 points apiece in the dying stages of the match. But it was Woy Woy who scored a try right at the end of the match to snatch the victory but 36 points to 31. It was a great half with the home side actually outscoring Woy Woy by 19 points to 12 in the final 40 minutes. Both sides will take a lot from the match going forward.
The Bay lost their President’s Cup clash with Terrigal Blue by 27 points to 21, in what proved a tough tussle throughout.
Women’s 10’s rugby continued with three excellent matches. Wins were recorded by Gosford/Woy Woy, Avoca Beach and the Razorbacks. Avoca Beach and Gosford/Woy Woy won their respective matches relatively easily, but the Razorbacks had to battle hard to get a close win over The Lakes.
