SWIETELSKY PREMIER 1 REPORT :
The Central Coast Rugby Union season continued with some excellent games of rugby played across the coast yesterday. In the Swietelsky Premier 1 matches, all games were quite close at halftime, although the winning teams did get away on the scoreboard as the second half progressed.
In what was a repeat of last year’s Grand Final, The Lakes took on Terrigal at Slade Park. The result ended in a similar way to last year when Terrigal ran out winners by 28 points to 7. It was a hard fought struggle throughout with both teams displaying some good rugby form. Early on, the scores were locked at 7 points apiece, but it was Terrigal who went to the halftime break leading by 14 points to 7 when they scored a late converted try in that half. The second half continued in much the same vein. Terrigal held the upper hand and it was them who crossed for a further two tries in that final 40 minutes. The Lakes were unable to respond with any points in that same period. Even though Terrigal seemed to have things in control for much of the match it was still always quite close and The Lakes often threatened. The win sees Terrigal firmly at the top of the ladder and leading the race already so early in the season. It was The Lakes’ first hit out of the year so they will be much stronger for the run. Best players for Terrigal were No.8 Elekana Laupola, flanker Aaron Carrigg and winger Richard Hopper, who crossed for two personal tries. The Lakes were best served by flanker Sean Anzelark and No.8 Ben Minness.
Hornsby travelled to Heazlett Park to meet Avoca Beach but it was the home side that recorded a 20 to 5 victory. Avoca Beach played excellent rugby and led throughout to get the win. Avoca Beach played steady rugby right from the opening whistle and were able to consistently post points in the first half. They scored first to lead 5 nil early on, before increasing that lead to 10 nil, and then taking a halftime lead of 17 points to nil. Hornsby had no answer to this attack and were unable to cross the line in the first half. The second half was a very even struggle, and in fact Hornsby outscored Avoca Beach by 5 points to 3 in the final 40 minutes. However all the damage had been done in the first 40 minutes. Hornsby attacked every way possible way in an attempt to bridge the gap but Avoca Beach were able to hang on to record a pleasing win. Avoca Beach also had their opportunities in the second half but simply failed to take them. Best for Avoca Beach were flanker Blake Jacob, and winger Cade Robertson, who crossed for 2 tries. Best for Hornsby on the day were prop Jack Vandersteen, lock Sione Vuna and No.8 James McCarthy, who scored the visitor’s lone try.
Kariong Oval saw a great rugby battle in which Kariong just held on to record a 25 points to 24 victory. That scoreline alone indicated the closeness of the match. It was also a very tough affair with some great attack and very solid defence from both teams. Kariong started like a house on fire and had crossed for two tries within the opening few minutes. This was mainly due to some wonderful attacking rugby from their fullback Jake Hubbard who made 50 metre runs for both these tries. It was certainly the start Kariong wanted. However to Warnervale’s great credit they fought hard in the struggle to get back into the match from this 12 nil deficit – and they were successful. They responded with a try, and then another, to make the score, close to halftime, 12 points to 10 in Kariong’s favour. Kariong scored right on halftime to go to the break leading by 17 points to 10 at the break. It was certainly anyone’s match at that stage and both teams were looking threatening on occasions. Warnervale outscored Kariong in the second half by 14 points to 8 but they just could not get in front during this period. Kariong were always in front on the scoreboard but it was Warnervale who got closer and closer throughout those final exciting 40 minutes. They failed by the single point to catch Kariong and overtake the home side. It was a good match with both teams desperate for victory. Kariong were best served by fullback Jake Hubbard, who crossed for 3 tries, centre Lachlan Peruch, and flanker Nick Outram. Warnervale had some excellent performers but none were better than flanker Kye Haslam, lock Matt Willmott, five-eight Matthew Hurley and centre Ethan Sant.
