PREMIER 1 REPORT :
In a wonderful game of Swietelsky Premier 1 rugby at Mark Taylor Oval, Hornsby and Kariong played out a 26 all draw. This match was neck and neck for the entire 80 minutes, and the game was only tied up at the fulltime whistle. Kariong opened the scoring with a try in the opening two minutes and it was just the start the visitors wanted. However, Hornsby hit back soon after with a converted try to take the lead by 7 points to 5. The scores in the match were always close and neither team was able to make a break on the other. The quality of the rugby was excellent and the intensity of the match was there for all to see. Kariong were keen to maintain their great recent form while Hornsby were wanting to celebrate their first home match with a win. The match remined even for the middle stages of the first half. Then Kariong next took the lead with a try, to lead 12-10, but soon after again, Hornsby responded with a second converted try to take the lead again 14-12. It was certainly proving a see-sawing clash. Hornsby scored their third try close to half time to go to the break leading by 19 points to 12. The second half continued in much the same vein, both teams giving their all and both teams have their respective periods of attack and defence. It was proving a hard fought and very even encounter. Kariong locked the scores up at 19 points apiece early in the half and the scores stayed that way for quite a while. Both teams had several excellent performances. For Hornsby, five-eight Sione Ala was excellent in all aspects of play, and he was very well supported by hooker Hosea Fotukava, No.8 James McCarthy, halfback Jack Woodrow and fullback Mitch Fullagar. Kariong were best served by flanker Nick Outram, lock Taylor Mildren, centre Lachlan Peruch, and halves Scott Hanley and Mitch Clay. Hornsby took the lead with about ten minutes to go but Kariong were not to be outdone. Kariong finished the match with several close attacks at the tryline and they were rewarded right in fulltime with a converted try to Mitch Clay to level the scores at 26 all. In some ways, the draw was an appropriate result for the match but both teams would rue the opportunity to get the victory. Both teams proved they will be close to the action at the end of the season.
Avoca Beach hosted the Razorbacks at Heazlett Park and were able to record a meritorious 31 to 24 win over the previously undefeated Razorbacks, Avoca Beach got away to a good start in this match and they were showing right from the kick-off they were to be a force on the day. They opened the scoring with two penalty goals to Sam Evans and they took an early 6 nil lead. The Razorbacks were quick to respond and scored the first try in the match to reduce the lead to 6-5. However, it remained Avoca Beach in the ascendancy for much of the rest of the first half and they were able to post a further 15 points in the half. Avoca Beach went to the halftime break with a very handy 21 points to 12 lead and it was all up to the Razorbacks to make a comeback in the second half. For most rugby supporters the size of the lead at the halfway point came as a surprise but the home side were certainly playing the better rugby. The second half was a far more even affair and both teams went point for point but that half time lead to Avoca Beach remained the difference. The Razorbacks did outscore the home team by 12 point to 10 in the second period but it was all too late. Best players for Avoca Beach were flankers Blake Jacob and Eden McQueen, five-eight Sam Evans, and fullback Mitch Briggs. The Razorbacks were best served by locks James Mann and Josefa Biu, hooker Sam Kearney and five-eight Pat Martin. The result of this match, and several others recently, have proved that this year’s competition is a very even affair and no team can be taken lightly. It all makes for a very interesting season.
The Lakes proved too strong for Woy Woy at Slade Park to record their first win of the season to the tune of 57 points to 28. It was Woy Woy who opened the scoring in this match and took the early lead. In fact, they led by 14 points to 7 early in the match and seemed they were continuing their great form from the previous Saturday. However gradually The Lakes took control and cemented a lead to demonstrate their best form for the year. The Lakes quickly grabbed the lead and jumped ahead and by halftime had leapt to a very handy 26 points to 14 lead. The Lakes were played some great rugby and their mercurial backline was proving almost unstoppable. The Lakes continued this form into the second half and were able to post a further 31 points in the final 40 minutes. Woy Woy did not stop however – they posted a further two tries to grab a valuable bonus point. It was obvious The Lakes wanted their first win for the year. Best players for The Lakes were fullback Jaydan Nauluvula, who crossed for 4 outstanding tries. Others to play well were back Macui Rauluni, who crossed for 2 tries, prop Ben Kaifa and five-eight Fillimoni Seru. Woy Woy gave it their all and their best performers were No.8 Philip Shaw, lock Pita Pio and hooker Unaloto Tupou.
WOMEN’S 10-A-SIDE REPORT by Bronte Doorn
The Lakes hosted Gosford/Woy Woy over the weekend for a well-deserved win for the visiting side. The Lakes knew what to expect looking at the results from previous games and went into the game with confidence and spirit, nonetheless. The Lakes started off great, building on phase after phase, but Gosford/Woy Woy’s defence was outstanding and they worked hard. Small errors proved costly for the Ladies of the Lakes which allowed Gosford/Woy Woy to take the opportunity to score. And score they did! This seemed to be the story for most of the game. The Lakes were able to cross the line late in the game scoring their first points after a string of penalties against the visiting side. The Lakes will be looking to score a win next week against the Warnervale Wildcats in an exciting clash.
The Razorbacks didn’t come away with a win against Avoca Sharks after their cracker of a win against The Lakes the week previous. The end result of 36-10 represents a hard-fought game. Avoca were very strong on the day of play in both defence and attack. Razorbacks had 2 runaway tries from Ellie Dark & Makayla McCarthy during the 1st & 2nd halves. The power of both teams were showcased the intensity in the scrum & line out which was great to see, making the game exciting and intense. Injuries during the match proved troubling for the Razorback woman but the resilience of the team got them through the rest of the game. Avoca proved to be the better team, coming away with an impressive win. Looking for a win, the Razorbacks will be heading to Hornsby for the next round, while the Avoca Women will be staying at home and hosting the undefeated Terrigal Trojans.
The Hornsby Nala’s were set to host Kariong at Mark Taylor Oval on Saturday for their Back to Hornsby – Andy Warner Memorial Day. The game demonstrated great strengths of both sides, with the opening minutes hotly contested. The deadlock, however, was broken in the 5th minute by Hornsby after a scrum win and quick ball which resulted in an outside break and try. Hornsby kept the momentum flowing by securing another try in the 8th minute. Hornsby went in the break leading 12-0. The defence of both teams made for a compelling match, with the second half being tightly contested. Kariong began to find a lot of forward momentum midway through the second half, demonstrating their ability to play hard and fast rugby. Constant defensive pressure from both sides made for a compelling 40 minutes. Two late tries in the game to the home team, sealed the deal for Kariong. The final result of the game being 22-0. While the final result produced a convincing win to Hornsby Nalas for their first home game of the season, it was a hard-fought game from both sides and a game that produced limited opportunities to get through each team’s defence. The Nala’s will be looking to continue their momentum into round 5 against the Razorbacks. Kariong woman will have a bye and will come into round six looking for redemption and a win.
