REPORT :
Despite some upheavals with venues because of the continuing damp conditions, Central Coast Rugby Union was able to get all matches on the paddock for Round 4, with some excellent games of rugby played across the Coast yesterday.
In the Match of the Day at Woongarrah No. 2 Oval, the Razorbacks and Avoca Beach met. This match was transferred north because Ourimbah Rugby Park was unavailable. Avoca Beach were able to hang on in this match to defeat the Razorbacks by 24 points to 19. This was an evenly fought encounter throughout. Avoca Beach led the match for the entire 80 minutes but the Razorbacks were always just behind on the scoreboard. Every time Avoca Beach seem to jump ahead, it was the Razorbacks who responded to kept the scores close. Avoca Beach opened the scoring in the match with a converted try and then quickly followed this up with a penalty goal, to take an early 10 points to nil lead. However, the Razorbacks were able to respond before half time with their own converted try. Avoca Beach went to the halftime break leading by a narrow 10 points to7. The match was very much up for grabs at this stage. Avoca Beach went further ahead early in the second half when they crossed for their second try. But once again the Razorbacks responded with their own try. Both teams scored 2 tries apiece in the second stanza to keep the scores very tight. Both teams had plenty of possession, but the fact that both teams scored 3 tries, simply shows the evenness of this contest over the 80 minutes. Best players for Avoca Beach were winger Josh Parish, who scored the 3 tries for his team, hooker Cooper Elliott, and No.8 Fion Henderson-Foley. The Razorbacks were best served by winger Ryan Bender, who crossed for 2 tries, lock James Mann and No.8 Rob Peden.
Kariong were at home to Hornsby at Kariong Oval in the local derby. Kariong were able to easily account for Hornsby by 54 points to 10. Kariong got away to a great start and were able to maintain that momentum for the entire match. The further the match went on, the stronger the home team became. Kariong scored very early and they kept the scoreboard ticking over from then on. By halftime they had jumped to a handy 26 points to 5 lead and even at that stage things did not look good for Hornsby. Kariong maintained the rage in the second half where they were able to post a further 28 points. It was a very consistent performance by the home side. A feature of the match was the 6 tries scored by Sean Peruch. Besides Peruch, others to play well were prop Jonah Manuao, flanker Kane Thomas and halfback Scott Hanley. Hornsby scored a try in each half, to their winger James O’Connor. Others to never stop trying were centre Brad Dixon, prop Jack Vandersteen and centre Harry Fox.
Ettalong Oval saw a one-sided battle in which The Lakes recorded 51 points to 5 victory over Woy Woy. This match was moved from Woy Woy Oval where a drainage issue made the oval unavailable. This score line alone indicated the progress of the match. The Lakes took control early in this match and never looked back. They controlled proceedings from start to finish and gave Woy Woy little scope to get back into the match. The Lakes went to the halftime break leading by 26 points to nil so the match was very much in their control even then. They continued in the same vein in the second half and were able to post a further 25 points in the final 40 minutes. Woy Woy gave it their all but simply found the visitors too strong on the day. Best players for The Lakes were centre Lathan Hutchinson-Walters, winger Daniele Cakuseru, and flanker Peni Rauluni. Woy Woy gave it their all and their best players were No.8 Tali Sitani, flanker Jazper Doak-Stride and centre Posiano Kamoto, who scored their lone try.
Terrigal opened up their season at The Haven when they met Gosford. Terrigal ran out convincing winners by 93 points to nil. Terrigal completely dominated this match both on the paddock and on the scoreboard. Terrigal were able to regularly post points and by halftime they had surged to a winning lead of 60 points to nil. To Gosford’s great credit, they never stopped trying and were able to reduce the scoring flow in the second half. Best for Terrigal were flanker Aaron Carrigg, five-eight Adam Danckert, who posted a personal tally of 38 points, and centre Harry Hughes.
On Friday night, The Bay won their first President’s Cup game this season when they defeated Warnervale by a pleasing 15 points to 5. Warnervale opened up the scoring with the first try, but it was The Bay who finished the stronger and responded with 3 tries.
Women’s 10’s rugby continued with three excellent matches. Wins were recorded by Hornsby and Avoca Beach.
