REPORT :
The Match of the Day at Woongarrah Oval saw home side Warnervale and visiting Avoca Beach put an intense game of rugby. Avoca Beach were able to get the win, running out winners by 27 points to 12. Avoca Beach got away to the better start in the match and crossed for the first try early on. Avoca Beach were able to maintain the better of things for much of the first half and were able to go to the halftime break leading by 15 points to nil. They were able to cross for two tries and at the same time keep the home side scoreless in the opening 40 minutes. It was a tough struggle both in the backs and the forwards. Best players for Avoca Beach were No.8 Matt Anderson, playing his 300th game for the club, centre Steve Pike, halfback Mitch Magrath and winger Josh Parrish, who was able to cross for two tries later in the match. Warnervale were best served by halfback Brenton Acreman, No.8 Tevita Piukala and centre Sione Piukala. The second half was a far more even affair with both teams posting 12 points each in the final 40 minutes. The match was interrupted by a serious injury which obviously affected both teams. The win sees Avoca Beach jump to the top of the competition ladder while Warnervale drop to third spot.
The Lakes and Kariong met at Kariong Oval in what was another a hard fought and intense battle between two teams desperate for points. Kariong held on to secure a 33 points to 24 win. The match had been moved to Kariong from Budgewoi due to the continuing dampness of Slade Park. This match was also cut short because of a serious injury late in the match. Kariong opened the scoring with a try in the opening few minutes but The Lakes were quick to respond with their own converted try. It was a very open game with both teams determined to spread the ball. Despite the dampness of the pitch, both teams put on a great display of rugby. Kariong scored their second try in the 10th minute to lead by 12 points to 7. Kariong were able to lead the match from then until the end of the match. However, every time Kariong got away on the scoreboard, The Lakes were able to respond to keep in touch. However, they were unable to bridge the gap. Kariong went to the break leading by 26 points to 19 and even at that stage both teams sensed they could get the victory. Both teams were able to only score the single try each in the second half. The second half was notable for the good defence from both teams. Best players for Kariong were fullback Jake Hubbard, centre Lachlan Peruch and lock Nick Outram. Best performances for The Lakes included five-eight Brayden Hutchinson-Walters, prop Tim Poese and centre Lathan Hutchinson-Walters. The win sees Kariong jump into third position on the competition ladder.
The Razorbacks and Terrigal met at Ourimbah Rugby Park and it was the Razorbacks who got the win on the day by 25 points to 14. The first half was a typical arm wrestle. Both teams threw everything at the contest and no quarter was asked for or given. However, it was the Razorbacks who got the better of the opening 40 minutes. The Razorbacks opened the scoring with two early penalty goals to Jarrod Grange. This 6 nil score line remained the score for much of the first half. The Razorbacks were able to extend that lead to 11 points to nil prior to half time. It was a handy lead at the break but both teams knew there was much on offer in the second half. Unfortunately, there was an extended delay at the start of the second half because of a serious injury and this would have had an affect on both teams. Play did resume in the second half and both teams were able to cross for two converted tries in that period. The second half ended up 14 points all. However, it was the first half that saw the Razorbacks gain the victory. The Razorbacks would welcome their return to the winner’s list. Both teams will take a lot out of this result. Best players for the Razorbacks were locks Steve Finley and Josefa Biu, and No.8 Rob Peden. Terrigal were best served by prop Harry Gray and centre Richard Hooper.
Hornsby travelled to Woy Woy Oval to take on home side Woy Woy and were able to record a most convincing victory, winning by 89 points to 22. Hornsby got away to a rapid start and it was not very long before they had posted their first 4 tries. This same control and dominance continued right through the first half and by half time the visitors had leapt to a totally commanding 63 points to 7 lead. It was certainly not Woy Woy’s half. To Woy Woy’s great credit, they performed much better in the second half – Woy Woy was only beaten by 26 points to 15 in the second half. It was a far more convincing performance by Woy Woy but the first half onslaught by Hornsby saw them with no chance of victory. Best players for Hornsby were centre Brad Dixon, who crossed for 3 tries, centre Hunter Bird and prop Aisea Tukipili. Best performers for Woy Woy were Jackson Dewar, lock Jordan Ross and flanker Jazper Doak-Stride.
The Bay President’s Cup team had the bye this weekend.
Women’s 10’s rugby continued with three excellent matches. The two matches on display demonstrated some highly skilled 10’s rugby. Comfortable wins were recorded by Terrigal and Avoca Beach
