REPORT :
The ‘Match of the Day’ at Heazlett Park saw Terrigal travel to meet home side Avoca Beach. This day/night match saw Terrigal defeat Avoca Beach by 32 points to 15. This seaside derby attracted a big crowd in great weather conditions. The match kicked off very evenly but it was the home side who crossed for the opening try. This 5 points to nil lead was quickly overtaken and with a converted try, Terrigal had grabbed the lead by 7 points to 5. A penalty goal to Adam Danckert soon after, increased the lead to 10-7. The remainder of the first half was an even battle with both teams having further chances to post points. Both teams did cross for a try before halftime to increase their respective scores. Terrigal went to the halftime break leading by 18 points to 10. This was a handy lead but one they know was nowhere near comfortable. A further try to Terrigal early in the second half made them more comfortable with the scoreboard but with over 30 minutes to go, anything could happen. Avoca Beach did respond with their third try to make the score 25-15, and despite a good period of play by the home team, they were unable to increase their score. Terrigal was able to secure the win with a late converted try to make the final score 32-15. Both teams will take a lot from this match. The win sees Terrigal go to the top of the competition ladder but Avoca Beach remain very close to the top. Best players for Terrigal were halfback Jye Cornish, five-eight Adam Danckert and winger Ulisene Esene. Avoca Beach were best served by halfback Mitch Magrath, fullback Mitch Briggs, who crossed for 2 tries, hooker Fionn Henderson-Foley and flanker Ethan Fullager.
The Razorbacks and Hornsby met at Ourimbah Rugby Park and the match resulted in a comfortable win to the Razorbacks by 51 points to 26. The Razorback got away to a strong start and it did not take long for them to jump to 13 points to nil lead early in the match. They had posted 20 points on the scoreboard before Hornsby were able to respond with their first try. The Razorbacks went to the halftime break leading by 20 points to 5. It was a comfortable lead. Hornsby did respond well early in the second half. They reduced the score to 20 points to 12 with two very good tries. However, the Razorbacks soon regained control and were not to be headed for the remainder of the match. The Razorbacks raced to 32 points to 12 lead. Hornsby were not to be outdone and were able to cross for a duo of converted tries to gain a valuable bonus point. It was a high scoring second half from both teams but the dominance of the Razorbacks in the first half had secured the victory for the home side. Best players for the Razorbacks were hooker Jordan Clark, flanker Jarrod Grange and winger Corbin Walters. Best for Hornsby were winger James O’Connor, and flankers Cooper Davenport and Samuela Kanongataa.
The Lakes were at home at Slade Park when they played neighbouring club Warnervale. The Lakes won this evenly fought match by 17 points to 7. Warnervale opened the scoring in the match with a converted try. They led 7 points to nil early in the match. The Lakes were quick to reply and had scored their own converted try soon after. This locked the scores up 7 all. The Lakes were able to cross for another converted try before halftime to go to the halftime break leading by 14 points to 7. It was still anyone’s match at this stage. The second half was a real dour battle. It developed into an arm wrestle for the final 40 minutes. The only points in the second half was a penalty goal to The Lakes to make the final score 17-7. Best players for The Lakes were five-eight Brayden Hutchinson-Walters, lock James McCombie and No.8 Reihana Hemopo. Warnervale were best served by No.8 Matt Martin, lock Lachlan Natapu and flanker Kye Haslam
The Bay & Woy Woy President’s Cup teams had the bye this weekend.
Women’s 10’s rugby continued with three matches. Avoca Beach defeated Terrigal 15-12 in a close match, while The Lakes and Hornsby recorded good wins.
