REPORT :
The Match of the Day at The Haven Oval saw Terrigal record a most convincing victory over Warnervale, running out winners by 61 points to 5. Warnervale got away to a great start by crossing for the first points in the match when they scored the opening try. But that is almost where it ended for them. It did not take long before Terrigal started to assert its supremacy and very quickly took control of the scoreboard. In fact by halftime Terrigal had jumped to a 33 points to 5 lead and the match seemed to be almost over by then. Terrigal was playing some very effective rugby and Warnervale appeared to have very few answers. Best players for Terrigal were No.8 Elekana Laupola, prop Harry Gray, flanker Sam Kenny, who crossed for 2 tries in the match, and five-eight Adam Danckert. Warnervale tried everything to close the difference on the scoreboard but it was just not going to be their day. Warnervale had several good performances, including No.8 Matt Martin, and centres Keegan Quakawoot and Soine Piukala. Terrigal continued on in the same vein in the second half and were able to post a further 28 points in the second stanza. The result sees Terrigal getting close to top form while Warnervale will need to regroup for the second half of the season to ensure they make the Finals this year.
The Lakes and Hornsby met at Pennants Hill Oval and the match proved a neck to neck struggle for the whole 80 minutes. The Lakes won the match in the final minutes by 27 points to 26. The Lakes opened the scoring with a converted try to take a 7 points to nil lead. This was quickly evened up by Hornsby. The middle stages of the first half saw The Lakes grab a significant lead and they maintained this lead to the break. At halftime The Lakes led by 19 pointas to 7. They had the better of the first half and thus had the lead in the match. However Hornsby was not to be outdone. They played some very good rugby early in the second half and by midway through the second half they had squared the match up at 19 points apiece. It was anybody’s game of rugby at that point. The latter stages of the match saw The Lakes regain the lead with a try, to lead 24 points to19 but it was not long before the home side took the lead 26-24 through a converted try. It was not until the dying stages of the match that The Lakes were able to kick a penalty goal to take the lead 27-26 and to get the victory. It was such a close and intense struggle throughout and both teams could have won this match. Best players for The Lakes were Wiremu Pirini, lock Reihana Hemopo, and fullback Macui Rauluni. Players who performed best for Hornsby were centres Hunter Bird and Harry Fox, and prop Russel Yates.
Heazlett Park saw another excellent performance by the Avoca Beach team, when they defeated Gosford by 69 points to 10. It was a fairly even start to the match with both team posting early points. In fact Gosford led in the early stages through some brilliant work by five-eight Ben Shelley. Gosford led by 10 points to 5 but that was the end of the scoring for the visitors. Avoca Beach gradually took control and was able to post points regularly for the reminder of the match. They played very structured rugby with their forwards doing their job and the backline showing considerable pace out wide to take full advantage of the good ball being received. Avoca Beach went to the halftime break leading by 26 points to 10 so even at that stage they were firmly in control. The young Gosford team never stopped trying but they had no answer to the Avoca Beach consistency and attack. Best players for Avoca Beach were fullback Mitchell Briggs, halfback Mitchell Magrath, hooker Cooper Elliott and flanker Austin McAlpine. Gosford had several good players but none were better than five-eight Ben Shelley, centre Sam Underwood, and locks Tofua Fifita and Mitch Cornwell. The win sees Avoca Beach maintain their spot at the top of the competition ladder.
Kariong defeated Woy Woy at Kariong Oval by 28 points to nil.
The Bay President’s Cup team had a hard fought loss to Terrigal White, going down by 15 points to 0.
Women’s 10’s rugby continued with two matches. Terrigal confirmed their Premiership favouritism by defeating Warnervale by 45 points to 10, and The Lakes caused an upset by defeating Hornsby by 26 points to 5.
