All Premier 2, President Cup and Women’s 10’s matches were cancelled due to the ongoing wet weather situation.
REPORT :
In what was a most unusual situation, all Central Coast Rugby Union Premier 1 matches were played at the same venue one after the other yesterday. This situation arose because of all the recent extremely wet weather where all lower grade fixtures, and the Women’s 10’s matches, were cancelled.
The Premier 1 matches were played at Woongarah Oval No.2, the only venue available for matches on the weekend.
The first Premier 1 match on the day, kicking off at 12.30 pm, saw
Terrigal defeat Gosford by 26 points to 8 in what was a tight struggle
for much of the match. The first half saw Terrigal continue to attack for much of this time but great Gosford defence kept Terrigal out for most of the first 40 minutes. Terrigal crossed for the one converted try in the first half to go to the lead of 7 points to nil at the halftime break. Terrigal continued to control things in the second half and were able to cross for a further 3 tries to Gosford’s one. It was a good win to Terrigal where they gained the bonus point but Gosford showed their continual improvement this year. A feature of the match were the three tries scored by Blake Irwin. Best players for Terrigal on the day were lock Macklan Collins, halfback Jye Cornish, prop Bailey Platt and flanker Noah Hughes. Gosford gave one of their best performances of the year, despite the loss, and this was mainly due to the work of centre Sam Underwood, who crossed for the team’s lone try, flanker Richard Cully and winger Michael Jones.
The second Premier 1 match, which kicked off at 2 pm, saw Avoca Beach account for the Razorbacks by 41 points to 29. Avoca Beach started off very well and controlled much of the proceedings in the first 40 minutes. They played excellent rugby and were able to maintain control of the scoreboard. After the scores were locked at 3 all early on, Avoca Beach went on a scoring spree and were able to go to the halftime break, leading by a comfortable 28 points to 3. It appeared to be a winning lead, and was, but the second half proved to be a far less comfortable one for them. The second half was almost the reverse of the first half. The Razorbacks outscored Avoca Beach by 26 points to 10 in the second half but because of the first half lead, Avoca Beach were able to hold on for the win. Best players for Avoca Beach were hooker Cooper Elliott, flanker Fionn Henderson-Foley, winger Shawn Townsend, who crossed for 3 tries, and winger Liam Jenkins, The Razorbacks were best served by fullback Edan Serone, No.8 Rob Peden and Josh Holman, in his return to rugby.
The final match on the day, commencing at 3.30 pm, saw Kariong continue their great recent form by defeating Hornsby by 36 points to 17. This match was a quite even affair for much of the first 60m minutes. Kariong held the upper hand in the first half and went to the halftime break leading by a narrow 17 points 12. So the match was still very much up for grabs at that stage. This local derby, being played away from home for both teams, was developing into a tight battle. However, the further the match went on, the more Kariong were able to take control on the paddock and on the scoreboard. They definitely outscored Hornsby later in the match. Kariong scored 6 tries to Hornsby’s 3 and that is a realistic indication of the flow of the match. The win sees Kariong maintain their lead at the top of the competition ladder. Kariong had several good players but none were better than centre Kane Williams, flanker Lachlan Peruch and lock Taylor Mildren. Best for Hornsby were No.8 Talifolau Sitani, hooker Hosea Fotukava, who crossed for 2 individual tries, and centre Samuela Kanongataa.
