REPORT :
The Premier 1 Major Semi-final saw Terrigal defeat Avoca Beach by 23 points to 13. The match was played at twilight at Woy Woy Oval and it proved to be typical Finals rugby. The first half was a dour battle with neither team willing to give any favours to the opposition. Avoca Beach did open the scoring after 13 minutes with a penalty goal but for the next 20 minutes no further points were posted. Both teams had periods of attack while good defence seemed to be the operative format. However gradually it was Terrigal who came back into the picture with two penalty goals late in the half to go to the halftime break leading by the narrow margin of 6 points to 3. It was proving a very even struggle with huge physical contact and tough defence. At that stage both teams were very much in the picture. Terrigal increased their lead early in the second half when they crossed for the first try in the match. With a lead of 13 points to 3 lead, things were looking quite good for the Terrigal team. A further converted try saw Terrigal leap further ahead on the scoreboard. Midway through the second half Terrigal led by 20 points to 3 and things were not looking good for the Avoca Beach team. However they fought back hard, and with more possession, were able to respond with two late tries. Neither try was converted so Terrigal were able to hang on to a 20 points to 13 lead. Avoca Beach’s main issue was winning at the lineout and this problem saw Terrigal able to take control of much of the possession for large periods of the match. Best players for Terrigal were hooker Ethan McInnes, five-eight Adam Danckert and centre Brent Merritt. Best for Avoca Beach were halfback Mitch Magrath, fullback Mitch Briggs, who crossed for 2 tries, and prop Tim Newton. Terrigal continue on the Grand Final at Central Coast Stadium in two weeks time, while Avoca Beach gets a second chance when they meet the Razorbacks in the Preliminary Final next Saturday at Woy Woy Oval.
In the Premier 1 elimination Minor Semi-final at Woy Woy Oval, the Razorbacks were able to defeat Kariong by 38 points to 19. This proved to be an intense and very exciting game of rugby. The Razorbacks definitely had the better of much of the first half and they were able to take the early lead. Both teams had periods of attack but it was the Razorbacks who were putting the points on the board. This match was certainly not for the faint hearted. The Razorbacks controlled much of the territory and possession in the first half to lead by 12 points to nil. Further chances to score were not taken. However in the final 5 minutes of the first half Kariong hit back with two great tries to level the score at 12 all at the halftime break. The game had certainly opened up late in the half. Kariong actually got to the lead early in the second half with their third try and this lead of 19 points to 12 was certainly holding the crowd in suspense. But it was the Razorbacks who finished the stronger in the match. They were able to gradually take control and steadily posted a further four tries in the remainder of the second half to take the victory. Best players for the Razorbacks were hooker Jordan Clark, No.8 Rob Peden, and five-eight Owen Turner. Kariong were best served by lock Nick Outram, No.8 Lachlan Peruch and fullback Jake Hubbard when he came on. The Razorbacks gained the win and will now continue on and will meet Avoca Beach next Saturday in the Preliminary Final to see who plays Terrigal in the Grand Final. Kariong would be most disappointed. They gained the lead early in the second half but simply could not hang on for the victory on the day.
The Lakes recorded a pleasing win in the Premier 2 Major Semi-final when they defeated Avoca Beach by 29 points to 13. The Lakes appeared to be in control for much of the match. They got away to a great start and maintained the lead for the remainder of the match. But although The Lakes led by 17 points to 8 at the halftime break, at that stage things were tightening up and still very much up for grabs. However The Lakes cemented their control in the match in the second half and went on to record a good victory. The Lakes go straight to the Grand Final while Avoca Beach have to face Terrigal next Saturday in the Preliminary Final so see if they get another chance to take on The Lakes.
Avoca Beach was able to win the President’s Cup Major Semi-final defeating Terrigal White by 25 points to 18. The first half was a very even affair in this match with both teams proving threatening at various stages in the half. Avoca Beach led by 13 points to 9 at the halftime break so it was anyone’s game at that stage. However Avoca Beach did appear to be in control and their good play saw them score 4 tries to nil in the match, but great goal kicking by Terrigal certainly kept them in the picture. Avoca Beach continues on to the Grand Final while Terrigal White takes on The Lakes next Saturday in the Preliminary Final to see who goes to the big one.
The Women’s 10’s Major Semi-final saw Avoca Beach prove too strong for Terrigal and they ran out winners by 33 points to 14. This was a high standard game of women’s 10’s rugby and both teams gave it their all. Play went from one end of the field to the other but it was Avoca Beach who were controlling much of the game and putting points on the scoreboard. Avoca Beach went to the halftime break leading by 19 points to 14. Avoca Beach kept Terrigal scoreless in the second half while they themselves posted a further 14 points to claim victory. Avoca Beach continues to the Grand Final in 2 weeks time while next Saturday Terrigal play Hornsby in the Preliminary Final.
