REPORT :
In the Premier 1 Elimination Semi-final at Woy Woy Oval, the Razorbacks
defeated The Lakes by 37 points to 19. In a match that was played
in drizzly, damp conditions, the contest was an even affair for much of the first
half.
The Lakes commenced the scoring with a try in the opening stages of the match. However, it was not very long before the Razorbacks responded and posted their first try and took the lead by 7 points to 5. The Razorbacks were never to be headed for the remainder of the match. They maintained the lead but The Lakes were never far behind on the scoreboard. The Razorbacks posted points to maintain the lead but The Lakes were always able to respond to and able to keep in touch for much of the match. The Razorbacks scored 3 tries in the first half while The Lakes crossed for 2 tries. So, the Razorbacks went to the halftime break leading by 19 points to 12. The Razorbacks had controlled territory and possession so far and so had the lead. The early stages of the second half saw the Razorbacks take further control and at the midway point of the second half they had surged to a 32 points to 12 lead in the
contest. Both teams did score a further try each late in the match but the victory had already been achieved by the Razorbacks. Best players for the Razorbacks were lock James Mann, and flankers Lochlan Stuhne-Scott and James Blanch. The Lakes were best served by half back Logan Hemopo, who crossed for 2 tries, lock Reihana Hemopo and flanker Peni Rauluni. The Razorbacks move on further into the Finals and will play Kariong next week. The Lakes would be disappointed with the result but not with their season. They made the Finals and competed well all year.
The Qualifying Semi-final between Avoca Beach and Kariong proved an enthralling contest. Avoca Beach were able to win by 30 points to 14 but not until after a titanic struggle that went into extra time.
Avoca Beach had the better of the first half and went to the halftime beak leading by 11 points to nil. The game never rose to any great heights up until this stage. It was proving very difficult to post tries and only 4 were scored in the 100 minutes of the match. Whereas Avoca Beach dominated the scoring in the first half, it was Kariong who crossed for 2 tries in the second half. Avoca Beach were only able to respond with 3 points in the second half. Kariong forced the match into extra time with a converted try right on fulltime of normal time. A conversion from near touch saw the scored locked at 14 points apiece at fulltime. The second half had proved a far more thrilling half of rugby and this tension was to go over into extra time. However, it was Avoca Beach who dominated that extra 20 minutes of the match. Avoca Beach went to the halftime of extra time leading by 24 points to 14 and then went on to secure a very significant victory. Best players for Avoca Beach were flanker Harrison Bowcock, who was everywhere during the match, fullback Mitchell Briggs, and halfback Mitch Magrath. The goal kicking of Sam Evans also proved vital with 6 match winning goals. Kariong were best served by prop Jonah Manuao, lock Nick Outram and No.8 Lachlan Peruch. Avoca Beach now go into the Major Semi-final next week and meet Terrigal, while Kariong play in the elimination Minor Semi-final against the Razorbacks next Saturday.
The Premier 2 Minor Semi-final saw an arm wrestle from start to finish.
Terrigal were able to outlast Warnervale by 9 points to 6. It was a penalty goal shootout with neither team able to cross for that vital try. Neither team rose to any great heights in this match and the damp conditions forced the match into a battle of the forward packs. Terrigal went to half time break leading by 6 points to 3 and that was the difference in the scores at fulltime. Both teams kicked a penalty goal in the second half. The scores were locked at 6 all midway through the second half but Terrigal were able to convert a late penalty goal to secure the win. Terrigal move onto the Preliminary Final in 2 weeks’ time and will meet the loser of next week’s Major Semi-final next week. Warnervale will rue their chances in the match and would be most disappointed with the result.
The Lakes were able to win the President’s Cup Minor Semi-final defeating Terrigal Blue by 11 points to 9. Terrigal Blue kicked an early penalty goal to lead 3 nil but The Lakes quickly responded with only try in the match to take the lead by 5 points to 3. Terrigal Blue went on to lead by 6 points to 5 at the halftime break so the match was very much up for grabs at that stage. The final half saw a real arm wrestle with The Lakes kicking a penalty goal in the final few minutes to take the victory by 11 points to 9. The season ends for Terrigal Blue while The Lakes move into the Preliminary Final in 2 weeks’ time.
The Women’s 10’s Minor Semi-final saw Hornsby prove too strong for The Lakes and ran out winners by 26 points to 12. The Lakes started strongly and took the early lead in the match. However, by halftime Hornsby had responded and had jumped to the lead by 14 points to 7 with two excellent tries. This match was proving a thriller and one that was enthralling the spectators at the ground. Hornsby went on to post a further two tries to one in the second half to gain the victory. Hornsby continue on in the Finals while the loss ends the season for The Lakes.
