REPORT :
The 2023 Central Coast Rugby Union season saw several exciting matches yesterday in Round 10 action in local rugby. The season has now entered the second half of the season and every match is so vital in the race to the Finals.
The Match of the Day at Gosford Showground between Gosford and Hornsby proved to be a nail biter from start to finish. Gosford won the match by 25 points to 17 but the contest was an arm wrestle for the entire 80 minutes. The opening minutes saw play move from one end of the field to the other, with several try scoring chances going by the board. However it was Hornsby who opened the scoring with a converted try in the 18th minute. Gosford were quick to respond with their own converted try to level the scores at 7 points apiece at the 23rd minute mark. This remained the score until right on halftime when Gosford kicked a long range penalty goal to take the lead by 10 points to 7 – that was the halftime score. The first half saw some great rugby displayed by both teams and the match was certainly up for grabs at the midway stage of the match. The second half continued in much the same vein but it was Hornsby who levelled the scores at 10 all early in the second stanza. At this stage the match ebbed and flowed and it was not until half way through the half that Gosford broke the deadlock with two quick successive tries to lead by 20 points to 10. But Hornsby was not to be outdone. They pressured Gosford right to fulltime so the match was no way secured until the final minutes of the match. Both teams crossed for a further try in the latter stages of the match but it was Gosford who hung on for the victory. Best players for Gosford were halfback Ben Shelley, winger Josh Parish and hooker Joel Wagner. Hornsby had several good efforts from prop Russell Yates, halfback Ben Astley, lock Dominic Cole, fullback Jack O’Connor and flanker Harrison Vollmost. The win sees Gosford cement their spot in fourth position on the competition ladder.
Avoca Beach hosted The Lakes at Heazlett Park and the home side were able to run out winners by 57 points to 19. It was all Avoca Beach in the early stages of the clash and they took the early lead. In fact they led by 17 points to nil before The Lakes were able to respond with their first points in the match. It was at that stage that The Lakes responded with two tries in the second half of the first stanza, but it was Avoca Beach who went to the halftime break leading by 24 points to 12. The second half saw Avoca Beach further assert their superiority in the match and they were able to post a further 33 points in the second half. The Lakes did cross for a lone converted try in the second half but were unable to make any inroads on the home team. Best players for Avoca Beach were prop Matt Ritchie, winger Mitchell Briggs, lock Lachlan Sooialo and flanker Matt Anderson. The Lakes were best served by prop Luke Clarkson, hooker Brandon Church and centre Ashton Hutchinson-Walters. The respective five-eights, Sione Vaenuku (The Lakes) and Sam Evans (Avoca Beach), both crossed for 3 tries apiece. Avoca Beach maintains their unbeaten record after 10 rounds of Central Coast rugby.
Woy Woy travelled to Ourimbah Rugby Park to meet the Razorbacks but it was the Razorbacks who recorded a 120 points to 0 victory. The Razorbacks controlled everything from start to finish and were to post points regularly and quickly throughout the match. They led by 52 points to nil at the halfway mark, and then were able to continue on and record a further 68 points in the second half. It was certainly not Woy Woy’s day. They had no answer to the Razorback onslaught. Best players for the Razorbacks were No.8 Lachlan Peruch, hooker Jade Strongman and centre Owen Turner. Flanker Rob Peden crossed for 5 tries for the home side. Best for Woy Woy were centre Jarrod Olive, winger Max Stride and centre Ulysses Fotofili.
Warnervale met Lake Macquarie at Woongarrah Sports Field in a match which saw Warnervale record a 50 points to 15 victory. Warnervale got away to a great start in this match and were able to pile on the points in the first half. They scored early and continued to post 38 points in the first half. They led by 38 points to nil at halftime. Lake Macquarie had no answer to the Warnervale attack in that first period. The second half was a far more even affair, and in fact, Lake Macquarie outscored Warnervale by 15 points to 12 in the second half. Lake Macquarie never gave up and maintained the effort right up until fulltime. Best players for Warnervale were five-eight Isaiah Niumata, centre Sevanaia Nabetelevu and prop Taniala Tangulu. Lake Macquarie were best served by halfback Matias Furno, five-eight Brendan Holiday and No.8 Vilikesa Ralagakali.
The Women’s 10’s competition matches continued yesterday. There have been some surprise results in recent weeks and this had resulted in the competition becoming all that more interesting leading into the second half of the year. Yesterday saw The Lakes, Terrigal and the Razorbacks all record important victories.
