REPORT :
The Match of the Day at Ourimbah Rugby Park saw the Razorbacks up against Gosford. The Razorbacks outlasted Gosford by 32 points to 23 to cement their third position on the competition ladder. Gosford had the better of the start and after 4 minutes had kicked a penalty goal to lead by 3 points to nil. This was followed up by a further penalty goal, and then a converted try in the 20th minute, to take an early and well deserved lead of 13 points to nil. However the Razorbacks were not to be denied, and an intercept try to them soon after reduced the gap to 13 points to 7. The match was proving a physical clash with both teams putting everything into each phase of play. The Razorbacks were getting the better of the set pieces and their scrum was particularly strong. The match was proving to be a very even affair. The Razorbacks hit back with their second converted try to take the lead in the 30th minute, and led by 14 points to 13. But soon after, the lead changed once again. Gosford crossed for their second try and they took the lead in this see-sawing contest. A penalty on the break further increased the lead, with Gosford going to the halftime break leading by 23 points to 14. The second half saw the Razorbacks gain the ascendancy. Even though things were quite tight on the scoreboard for quite awhile, it was the home team who were able to cross for two further tries in the second half while Gosford remained scoreless in that final 40 minutes. The Razorbacks reduced the gap with a try in the 15th minute, and then took the lead with another try soon after as a result of a great 70 metre run by centre Alifereti Joji. This was the turning point in the match. Best players for the Razorbacks were flankers Rob Peden and Matt Martin, prop Jordan Clark, and No.8 Lachlan Peruch. Gosford were best served by half back Ben Shelley, flanker Logan Campbell and lock Taylor Mildren.
Warnervale proved too strong for Hornsby in their clash at Mark Taylor Oval, running out victors by 47 points to 12. Warnervale got away to the better start and they opened the scoring with a converted try. In fact, by halftime they had crossed for three converted tries so went to the halftime break leading by a very handy 21 points to nil. The visitors weer playing some very effective rugby and were maintaining the excellent form that they had shown in recent weeks. Hornsby did respond quickly in the second half with a try but it was Warnervale who maintained the rage and went on to post a further 26 points in the second half. Hornsby did cross for two tries in the match but they were unable to stop the Warnervale team from rewording a handsome victory. Best players for Warnervale were No.8 Tevita Piukala, flanker Kye Haslam and centre Zanian Theron. Hornsby were best represented by fullback Jade Gillespie, No.8 Hamish Perring and flanker Cooper Davenport.
Terrigal and The Lakes clashed at The Haven Oval and Terrigal recorded a totally one-sided victory by 106 points to nil. It was all Terrigal from start to finish and The Lakes had no answer to the onslaught. Terrigal led by 40 points to nil at the halftime break, and then went on to record a further 66 points in the second half. In the meantime, The Lakes were unable to move the scoreboard despite their best efforts. Best players for Terrigal were No.8 Salipopo Pamata, prop Antonio Cunha and winger Blake Irwin. Irwin was able to cross for 5 personal tries in the match. Several players gave their all for The Lakes but none more than flankers Seth Olsen and Wiremu Pirini, and centres Iliesa Cama and Brad Hayes. Terrigal, because of the win, hold on to the Challenge Shield.
Woy Woy travelled to meet Lake Macquarie at Walters Park, Boolaroo where Lake Macquarie scored their first victory of the season. Lake Macquarie won the match by 48 points to 17. Lake Macquarie got away to a good start and it was not long before they had crossed for their first try. Woy Woy did respond quickly and the scores were 7-5 in the home team’s favour for quite awhile. However, the remainder of the first half saw Lake Macquarie assert their authority and were able to cross for a total of 4 tries in the first half. Lake Macquarie went to the halftime break leading by 26 points to 5. Woy Woy did play some good rugby early in the second half. They were able to cross for 3 tries and suddenly the match was alive with the gap between the two teams on the scoreboard greatly reduced. Lake Macquarie did still lead the match but the lead was reduced to 26 points to 17. It was at this stage that Lake Macquarie switched on and went onto post a further 22 points to seal the victory. Best players for Lake Macquarie were Mark De Vries, winger Malu Fiu and halfback Matias Funo, who crossed for 2 tries. Woy Woy’s best were prop Sione Fanua, flanker Casey Woodford, fullback Ulysses Fotofili and winger Max Stride. It was a pleasing victory for the Lake Macquarie team who have had a tough year.
The Women’s 10’s competition matches continued today. Terrigal, Avoca Beach and Hornsby all recorded impressive and important victories on the day. These results see Terrigal and Avoca Beach entrenched in first and second positions respectively on the competition ladder, while Hornsby have jumped into fourth position.
