REPORT :
The 2023 Central Coast Rugby Union season saw several exciting matches yesterday in Round 12 action in local rugby. The season has now well into the second half of the season and every match is so vital in the race to the Finals. Today the top placed teams played the lower placed teams and the results went that way.
The Match of the Day at Mark Taylor Oval saw Avoca Beach defeat Hornsby by 56 points to 14. The match started off quite evenly and both teams had their respective periods of attack and defence. Avoca Beach opened the scoring but very soon after, Hornsby grabbed the lead with their own converted try to lead by 7 points to 5. However, Avoca Beach were quick to respond and they crossed for their second try to retake the match lead soon after. It was from this point that Avoca Beach always threatened to be in charge although the scores did remain tight for a long period. Avoca Beach went on to lead by 27 points to 14 at the halftime break and even at that stage things were starting to not look good for the home side. So, it proved in the second stanza. Avoca Beach was able to post a further 29 points in the second half while Hornsby were unable to increase their score. Best players for Avoca Beach were winger Mitch Briggs, who crossed for 5 tries, fullback Kye Tancred, No.8 Michael Hobden and flanker Matt Hurd. Hornsby had several good performers but none were better than lock Dominic Cole, No.8 Hamish Perring, centre Jade Gillespie and flanker Cooper Davenport. It was a dominant performance by the Avoca Beach team and their unbeaten record is still maintained.
The Lakes hosted the Razorbacks at Slade Park but it was The Razorbacks who won the match by 61 points to 17. Like the match described above, the first half was a very even struggle with neither team able to gain any significant advantage on the paddock and on the scoreboard. The Lakes led early before the Razorbacks crossed for 3 converted tries to take the lead. It seemed they would go on with it at that stage but The Lakes were able to respond. The Lakes crossed for their own two tries later in the half and by halftime the match was almost squared up. The Razorbacks were in the lead and went to the halftime break leading by the narrow margin of 21 points to 17 – it was anyone’s’ match at that stage. However, the second half proved to be the Razorbacks – they controlled proceedings in the second half and The Lakes had no answer. The second half was a totally different story from the first half and the Razorbacks were able to post 40 unanswered points in the second half. Best players for the Razorbacks were flanker Rob Peden, who crossed for 3 tries, lock Steve Finley and prop Mackenzie Zammit, while centres Sione Vaenuku and Ashton Hutchinson-Walters were good for the home team.
Terrigal met Lake Macquarie at Boolaroo and the Terrigal team were able to post a huge victory, running out victors by 108 points to 0. It was all Terrigal from start to finish and Lake Macquarie had no answer to the onslaught. Terrigal were able to lead by 52 points to nil at the halftime break, and they then continued the attack in the second half to post a further 56 points. It was an excellent win by Terrigal and cemented their position in second spot on the competition ladder. Lake Macquarie had no answer on the day and will regroup for their next fixture in 2 weeks time. Terrigal’s best players were winger Blake Irwin, who crossed for 5 tries, flanker Josh Moorhouse and lock Zach Byrne. Lake Macquarie were best served by lock Jarrod Scott, five-eight Brendan Holliday and substitute Josh Nicho.
Woy Woy and Warnervale clashed at Woy Woy Oval and Warnervale ran out winners by 129 points to nil. Warnervale posted 21 tries in a totally one-sided match. They scored tries consistently for the entire 80 minutes and Woy Woy, despite their effort, were unable to stop their progress. Warnervale led by 62 points to nil at halftime, and then went on to score a further 67 points in the second half. Best players for Warnervale were prop Tupou Soane, centre Sam Kanongataa and flanker Jack Alipate. Best efforts for Woy Woy came from winger Mitieli Tamani, centre Ulysses Fotofili and prop Tim Cook.
The Women’s 10’s competition matches continued today. The Lakes, Warnervale and Avoca Beach all record important victories.
