REPORT:
The 2024 Central Coast Rugby Union season continued with Round 6 in the WLG Premier 1 series of matches.
The match between the Razorbacks and Lake Macquarie at Ourimbah Rugby Park saw a fierce contest from start to finish. The Razorbacks were able to outlast Lake Macquarie to the tune of 47 points to 35. However, there was very little in the match for the entire 80 minutes. Lake Macquarie got away to the better start with an early converted try in the 4th minute to take a 7 nil lead. This lead was soon pegged back with two penalty goals to the Razorbacks. Lake Macquarie then regained the ascendancy for quite a while, to go further ahead on the scoreboard, and they led by 21 points to 6 at the midway point of the first half. It was the Razorbacks who then steadied the ship and responded with their own two tries late in the half to square the ledger. The two teams went to the halftime break locked at 21 points apiece. It was shaping up to be a hard fought and tight struggle in the second half. The first half definitely was, and both teams were playing some very entertaining rugby. However, the second half saw the Razorbacks post a further 26 points while Lake Macquarie could only respond with the two converted tries. Both teams gave it their all and it was not until the latter stages of the match that the result was confirmed. Best players for the Razorbacks were flanker Matt Martin, No. 8 Rob Peden, who crossed for 2 tries, and Connor Peden. Lake Macquarie were best served by five-eight Rhys Cawley and flanker Jarrod Scott. Fellow flanker Joe Lewer crossed for 3 tries in the match. The Razorbacks showed they are Premiership potential this year, while Lake Macquarie will push for a Finals spot this year if they maintain the form displayed in this match.
Gosford and Warnervale met at Woongarrah Oval but it was the home team Warnervale who defeated Gosford by 41 points to 5. Warnervale dominated proceedings from the opening whistle and were able to maintain the lead throughout the entire match. They got away to an early lead with a converted try to Moleni Soane and never looked back on the day. By halftime, they led by 19 points to 5. Gosford scored their only try in the match in that first half. Warnervale maintained the attack in the second half and were able to post a further 22 points in the final 40 minutes. Gosford tried everything to bridge the gap but good defence by the home team prevented the visitors from posting any points on the scoreboard in the final 40 minutes. It was a good win for Warnervale who have placed themselves near the top of the competition ladder at this stage of the season. Best players for Warnervale were hooker Kye Haslam, winger Alfred Brown and prop Tupou Soane. Gosford’s best performers were No.8 Jackson Steinbeck, centre Joel Wagner and five-eight Ben Shelley.
Woy Woy hosted Terrigal at Woy Woy Oval but the match saw Terrigal convincingly defeat Woy Woy to the tune of 87 points to 7. It was non-stop scoring for Terrigal for the entire match despite the very best efforts by the home team. Terrigal scored early and then maintained the attack for the next 80 minutes. By halftime, Terrigal led by 40 points to 7 and even at that stage the match was all sealed up. Woy Woy did cross for their only try in that first 40 minutes. Terrigal were able to post a further 47 points in the second stanza and went on to record a handsome victory. Woy Woy had no answer to their attack despite their very best efforts in the match. Best players for Terrigal were fullback Jayden Woolley, who crossed for 2 tries, and flankers Eddie Bookallil and Will Shipton. Winger Blake Irwin crossed for 4 tries in the match. Best for Woy Woy were lock Harry Burgess, flanker Una Tupou, who scored their try, and centre Guy Blades.
The CCRU Women’s 12’s competition recommenced this weekend with some exciting matches. Lake Macquarie continued their great form and recorded a pleasing win over the Razorbacks, while Terrigal and Avoca Beach recorded resounding victories in their respective matches.
In the President’s Cup competition, The Lakes, Razorbacks, Kariong and Warnervale all recorded victories on Saturday. This competition continues to develop into a tight tussle.
