REPORT:
The 2024 Central Coast Rugby Union season continued with Round 8 in the WLG Premier 1 series of matches. After the break last weekend because of the NSW Country Rugby Championship, it was back to club rugby yesterday. Terrigal and Warnervale met at Woongarrah Oval in very damp and overcast conditions. Terrigal were able to outlast Warnervale by 15 points to 6. However, Terrigal certainly did not have it all their own way. This match was an arm wrestle from start to finish. Both teams gave it their all and it was defence that was the order of the day. This top of the table clash brought out the best in both sides. Warnervale opened the scoring with a penalty goal early on and this 3 nil lead remained the score for the majority of the first half. Warnervale increased the lead just before halftime with a second penalty goal to Sione Braxton, to go the halftime break with a narrow 6 points to nil lead. It was obviously anybody’s match at that stage. The score at half time showed just how tight the match was proving to be. Terrigal took the lead very early in the second half when they crossed for a converted try. This lead of 7 points to 6 remained the score for quite awhile. It was Terrigal who were to score a second try, and kick a penalty goal, later in the half, to go on to secure the victory. Best players for Terrigal were prop Harry Gray, lock Isaac Riviere, five-eight Adam Danckert and centre Jake Farnworth. Warnervale were best served by flanker Kye Haslam, and was everywhere during the game, hooker Setulu Paea and centre Sione Piukala. Both teams showed they will be close to the action at the end of the year. Both played excellent rugby on the day. However it was Terrigal who secured the victory and maintained their spot at the top of the competition ladder. The win also sees Terrigal take the Challenge Shield which had been briefly held by the Warnervale club. Gosford hosted the Razorbacks at Carrington Street Oval. The change of location was due to Gosford Showground Oval being closed. The Razorbacks proved too strong, running out winners by 36 points to 10. The Razorbacks went on the attack early and dominated both possession and territory for the first 15 minutes. Gosford did defend very well and thwarted many of the Razorback attacks. But it was not too long before the Razorbacks opened the scoring. They led 12 nil early on before Gosford were able to cross for their opening try. The first half was quite a good display of rugby with both teams prepared to throw the ball around. However it was the Razorbacks who were in control of the scoreboard and they went to the halftime break leading by 17 points to 5. The second half saw the Razorbacks take further control and they were able to post a further 19 points in that final 40 minutes. Gosford never stopped trying and went close on several occasions to getting their second try. This did happen later in the half but the match result had been gone for them at that stage. The win sees the Razorbacks leap into second spot on the competition ladder. Gosford were very competitive and they certainly made the Razorbacks earn their victory. Best players for the Razorbacks were hooker Jade Strongman, who crossed for two tries, No.8 Rob Peden, flanker Matt Martin and halfback Connor Peden. Best for Gosford were lock Taylor Mildren, halfback Ben Shelley, and centre Sam Underwood. The win also sees the Razorbacks take the Thomson-Brown trophy for another year. The match between the Avoca Beach and Woy Woy was transferred from Heazlett Park to Ettalong Oval, once again due to the very wet ground conditions. Avoca Beach proved too strong for Woy Woy, winning by 53 points to nil. Avoca Beach opened the scoring very early on with a try and they then scored consistently for the remainder of the match. Avoca Beach went to halftime break leading by 31 points to nil. They had the match already secured at that stage. To Woy Woy’s great credit, they gave it their all in the second stanza and did their best to post points. It was not to be but they made Avoca Beach certainly work for theirs. Best players for Avoca Beach were forwards Lachlan and Emile Thomas, five-eight Sam Evans, and centre Alex Halls. A feature of the match were the 4 tries scored by winger Kaya Ardita. Woy Woy were best served by five-eight Sione Matakaiongo, lock Levi Naiqaci and fullback James Leary. The CCRU Women’s 12’s competition recommenced this weekend with two exciting matches. Terrigal and Avoca Beach secured pleasing victories. In the President’s Cup competition, only two matches were played, both these being on Friday night. The Saturday contests were postponed due to the damp condition of the grounds.
