REPORT :

The 2024 Central Coast Rugby Union season continued with Round 12 in the WLG Premier 1 series of matches. The matches were played in beautiful sunny conditions which was a welcome change this year.

Avoca Beach and the Razorbacks met at Ourimbah Rugby Park in a contest that was hard fought and close throughout. Avoca Beach won the day by 20 points to the Razorbacks 15. The Razorbacks opened the scoring in the 9th minute when halfback Connor Peden crossed for the opening converted try. The 7 nil lead remained the score for the next 20 minutes before Avoca Beach squared the ledger. A converted try to Avoca Beach’s Sam Evans saw the scores locked at 7 points apiece for the remainder of the first half. It was proving to be a great game of rugby with both teams giving their all. There was nothing between the two teams in that first 40 minutes, the halftime score of 7 all was proof of that. Avoca Beach took the lead for the first time early in the second half when they kicked a penalty goal to lead by 10 points to 7. Avoca Beach went further ahead after 14 minutes in the second half when they crossed for their second try to increase their lead to 17 points to 7. The Razorbacks did reduce that lead with a penalty goal to make the score 17 points to 10 at the midway point of the second half. The Razorbacks attacked consistently later in the half but could only cross for the single try at this time to make the score 17-15. It was proving to be a close finish to the match with both teams trying everything to get the victory. A penalty goal to Avoca Beach near fulltime cemented the win by 20 points to 15. There were some outstanding performances from several players in both teams in this match. Best players for Avoca Beach were fullback Henry Parker, flanker Fionn Henderson-Foley, winger Tyler Park, and lock Michael Hobden. Best for the Razorbacks were halfback Connor Peden, centre Owen Turner and winger Kumudika Gunaratne. Both teams proved they have Premiership credentials about them but it was Avoca Beach, with this win, who jumped ahead of the Razorbacks on the competition ladder at this stage of the season.

Warnervale travelled to Woy Woy Oval to meet home team Woy Woy but it was Warnervale who won the day by 45 points to 14. It was a see-sawing match but it was always Warnervale who were in charge on the scoreboard. Warnervale crossed for two converted tries in the first 7 minutes to take a very early 14 points to nil lead. It was certainly the start they wanted but not what the home team needed. Woy Woy did strike back then with their own try to make the score 14-7 at the midway point of the first half. The match did even out at that stage with Warnervale only able to cross for their third converted try close to halftime. Warnervale went to the halftime break leading by 21 points to 7 and were definitely in control at that stage. The second half continued in much the same vein. Warnervale continued to post tries while Woy Woy never gave up in trying to prevent them scoring. Warnervale did post a further 24 points in the second half while Woy Woy were only able to respond with their second converted try in that same period. Best performers for Warnervale were lock Enosi Falekaono, who crossed for 2 tries, halfback Harry Sexton and outside centre Scott Fitzpatrick. Woy Woy saw good performances from hooker Tim Cook, halfback Mitch Hyde and No.8 Tali Sitani. It was a pleasing win for Warnervale which sees them cement their fourth spot on the competition ladder.

Lake Macquarie hosted Gosford at Walters Park, Boolaroo but it was the visitors Gosford who gained the victory by 35 points to 26. Gosford got away to a great start. They crossed for early tries. In fact, by midway through the first half, Gosford had crossed for three converted tries to lead by 21 points to nil. It was a great start for them and took them a long way towards their ultimate victory. Lake Macquarie did get going at that stage in an attempt to bridge the gap. They went a long way towards doing that in the second period of that first half. They responded with their own three tries to make the halftime score very close – Gosford 21 Lake Macquarie19. It was anyone’s match at that stage. It was then Gosford’s turn to surge early in the second half. They crossed for a further two tries at the start of the second half to jump to a very handy 35 points to 19 lead. Once again Lake Macquarie responded. They crossed for a converted try late in the half but it was all too late. Gosford had hung on for the win. Best players for Gosford were outside centre Will Sharpe, flanker Isaac Steinbeck, five-eight Jack Shelley and inside centre Jackson Steinbeck. Lake Macquarie was best served by outside centre Ifan Hunnam, who crossed for three personal tries, centre partner Isaako Enosa and five-eight Rhys Cawley.

The CCRU Women’s 12’s competition continued this weekend with three exciting matches. Avoca Beach defeated the Razorbacks by 10 points 5 in a close one, while the Terrigal and Warnervale recorded significant victories.

In the President’s Cup competition, there were some interesting contests. The Lakes, Avoca Beach, Kariong and Lake Macquarie all recorded victories.
