REPORT :

The 2024 Central Coast Rugby Union season rounds concluded this weekend with Round 14. The competition now heads into the Final Series over the next four Saturdays, leading to the Grand Final on the 24th August at Industree Group Stadium in Gosford. There were some exciting matches in this final Round 14.

Avoca Beach travelled to Woongarrah Oval to meet home team Warnervale in what proved a cliff-hanger from start to finish. Warnervale won the match by 13 points to 8. The win sees Warnervale leap into second spot on the competition ladder and they will meet Minor Premiers Terrigal in the Major Semifinal in two weeks time. Avoca Beach opened the scoring with a penalty goal in the opening few minutes of the start of the match. This 3 points to nil remained the score for the remainder of the first half. So obviously it was a very hard fought and intense first 40 minutes. Both teams gave it their all in an attempt to cross for that first vital try. However, great defence from both sides prevented any further scoring in the half. With the halftime score being 3 nil, it was any one’s match in the second half. Warnervale took the lead in the first few minutes of the second half when they crossed for a converted try. The second half was evenly fought but this 7 points to 3 lead to the home side was just the start to the half that Warnervale wanted. The remainder of the second half saw Avoca Beach respond with their own try but it was the two penalty goals to Warnervale later in the half that sealed the victory. The match was of a high standard and set the standard for the Finals coming up over the next few weeks. Best players for Warnervale were flanker Tevita Piukala, centre Sione Piukala and hooker Matt Willmott. Avoca Beach had several good performances, but none were better than hooker Cooper Elliott, fullback Michael Houssenloge, centre Liam Jenkins and winger Tyler Park. It was a significant victory for Warnervale, who now get a week’s rest, while Avoca Beach will meet the Razorbacks next week in the Minor Semifinal.

Terrigal hosted Gosford at The Haven Oval in what proved a convincing win for the home team by 70 points to 24. Although it was a big win it proved quite an entertaining match with player movement from one end of the field to the other. Terrigal got away to a great start and opened the scoring with a converted after 15 minutes. This was followed by two quick tries, and suddenly Terrigal had jumped to a very handy 21 points to nil lead. Terrigal were always in control on the scoreboard but Gosford never backed off and despite the loss they maintained the effort. Terrigal went to the halftime break leading by 35 points to 7 so basically had the match all sealed up even at that stage. Terrigal continued to attack in the second half and were able to post a further 35 points in the second stanza. Gosford did have their rewards in the second half and were able to gain a bonus point with four tries. Best players for Terrigal were hooker Ethan McInnes, who was playing his 100th Premier 1 match and who also scored two tries, No.8 Lachlan Sooialo and flanker Edward Bookalli. Gosford were best served by No.8 Taylor Mildren, centre Will Sharpe, winger Max Farmer and halfback Ben Shelley. Terrigal will have the week off and then will meet Warnervale in the Major Semifinal in two weeks time. For Gosford, it was an end to their season for 2024. Terrigal also hold on to the Challenge Shield for this season.

The Lake Macquarie and Woy Woy match at Woy Woy Oval saw Lake Macquarie cruise home with a huge 99 points to 31 victory. It was such a high scoring match from start to finish with a total of 19 tries in the match. But it was Lake Macquarie who were always in control on the scoreboard and on the paddock. Lake Macquarie opened the scoring early on and maintained the rage for the first 40 minutes. They went to the halftime break leading by 54 points to 12. The result had definitely been decided by then but both teams were still very much intent on scoring tries in the second half. It was a great way for Lake Macquarie to finish the season. Best players for Lake Macquarie were centre Isaako Enosa, flanker Jarod Scott and hooker Matt Bartley. Woy Woy had several good performances but none were better than hooker Daniel King, who crossed for three tries, lock Tofua Fifita and centre Guy Blades. These two teams see their season completed for 2024.

The CCRU Women’s 12’s competition continued this weekend with three exciting matches. The Lakes and the Razorbacks drew their match 10 all but this was enough for The Lakes to make the Finals. Wins were also secured by Lake Macquarie, who finish as Minor Premiers, and Avoca Beach. These latter two teams will meet in the Major Semifinal in two weeks time.

In the President’s Cup competition, there were some interesting contests. The Razorbacks defeated The Bay on Friday night, and on Saturday, Avoca Beach, Terrigal, Kariong and The Lakes all recorded victories.
