PREMIER 1 REPORT :
The final round in Central Coast Rugby Union has finalised the Final Five for the Finals this year. All four matches went as most people predicted so the the rankings for the Final Five in Premier 1 stay the same as last week.
Terrigal proved too strong for The Lakes at The Haven Oval, winning the match by 38 points to 24. Terrigal got away to a great start and it was not long before they had surged to a 12 points to nil leads with two quick tries. It was the start they wanted. However, it did not take long before The Lakes were able to get back into the contest and the match was soon locked up at 12 points apiece. It was proving an exciting match with some good rugby on display. Both teams were able to add a further try in the latter stages of the first half but with The Lakes converting their try, they were able to go to the halftime break leading by 19 points to 17. Terrigal proved the stronger team in the second stanza and they asserted their authority on the paddock and thus on the scoreboard. They were able to outpoint The Lakes in the final 40 minutes by 21 points to 5. Best players for Terrigal were centre Brent Merritt, flanker Aaron Carrigg and five-eight Adam Danckert. The Lakes were best served by centre Ashton Hutchinson-Walters and lock Reihana Hemopo. The win to Terrigal cements their Minor Premiership and they will have next week off in the Finals, while The Lakes meet the Razorbacks in the elimination Minor Semi-final at Woy Woy Oval. The Terrigal win also sees them retain the Challenge Shield for the remainder of 2022.
Avoca Beach won a tight struggle against Hornsby at Heazlett Park, running out winners by 35 points to 27. This match was an arm wrestle throughout with neither team able to take a complete break on the scoreboard at any time in the match. The first half went point for point for the full 40 minutes. Avoca Beach went to the halftime break leading by the very narrow margin of 18 points to 17. It was anybody’s match at that stage. The second half continued to be a close struggle but Avoca Beach were able to maintain their hold on the lead and to go on and win the match. Best players for Avoca Beach were centre Alex Halls, hooker Cooper Elliott, lock Emile Thomas and No.8 Fionn Henderson-Foley. Hornsby were best served by five-eight Hunter Bird, winger James O’Connor and No.8 Cooper Davenport. The win sees Avoca Beach confirm second spot on the competition ladder and next week they play Kariong in the qualifying semi-final.
Warnervale travelled to Kariong Oval to play Kariong. However they were unable to compete with Kariong on the day, and Kariong were able to run out winners by 52 points to 17. Kariong got away to a great start in this match and they completely dominated the first 40 minutes. They were almost unstoppable. They piled on 35 points in the first half to go to the break with a match winning lead. Warnervale did fight back in the second half with three team tries but it was all too late. The second half was a far more even affair with both teams posting 17 points in the final 40 minutes. However, the first half was the difference on the day. Best players for Kariong were fullback Jake Hubbard, who scored 2 tries, flanker Ryan Conaghan and five-eight Josh McGlynn. Warnervale’s best players were props Veipueki Siale and Nick Jansen, and flanker Ricky Halangahu. The win sees Kariong into the qualifying semi-final against Avoca Beach next Saturday at Woy Woy Oval.
Gosford hosted the Razorbacks at Gosford Showground and were defeated by 38 points to 5 by the visitors. It was a convincing win by the Razorbacks and holds them in good stead going into the Finals next Saturday. They controlled proceedings for much of the match. They went to the halftime break leading by 17 points to nil, and then were able to post a further 21 points in the second half. It was a very consistent performance. Gosford gave it their all but had to be content with the lone try. The win see the Razorbacks hold onto the Thomson-Brown Shield. Best players for the Razorbacks were flanker Lochlan Stuhne-Scott, prop Steven Finley and centre Jarrod Grange while the best for the home team were No.8 Joel Wagner, flanker Richard Cully and winger Liam Etherington. The Razorbacks meet The Lakes next weekend in the elimination Minor Semi-final.
President’s Cup rugby saw The Bay defeated by Woy Woy by 19 points to 0.
All six teams were in action yesterday in Women’s 10’s rugby. Avoca Beach defeated Hornsby by 17 points to 5 in a tight struggle, Terrigal defeated The Lakes by 73 points to 7, and Kariong/Razorbacks scored an upset 22 points to 17 win over Warnervale.
