REPORT :
The Central Coast Rugby Union season continued with some excellent games of rugby played across the coast yesterday. In the Swietelsky Premier 1 matches, all games were quite close at halftime, although the winning teams did get away on the scoreboard as the second half progressed.
Hornsby demonstrated they are in for a successful season when they accounted for Warnervale by 22 points to 3 at Woongarrah Oval. The match was very evenly fought in the first half with both teams giving their all. Hornsby only went to the halftime break leading by 5 points to 3 so the match was certainly up for grabs at that stage. The home side would have been most hopeful of getting the win but it was not to be. Hornsby controlled much of the second half but they certainly did not have it all their own way. Hornsby posted a further 17 points in the final stanza to secure a welcome victory. Both teams proved they will be a threat this year and they will both get stronger as the year progresses. Best for Hornsby were flanker Oliver Jenkins, No.8 Tevita Faupola, who crossed for a try, and centre Tuihakavalu Ika. Warnervale never stopped for the entire 80 minutes. Best for them on the day were flankers Moleni Soane and Dean Crofskey, and centre Rickard Aholelie. Both teams will take a lot from the match as they move through the 2021 season.
Terrigal came from behind to defeat Kariong at The Haven Oval by 44 points to 29. This match was a much closer and tougher affair than the final score indicates. It was a real tussle right from the opening whistle and both teams were throwing everything at each other. Kariong led early by 7 points to 3, and even increased this lead through the first half. They led by 12 points to 10 just before halftime when a penalty goal to Terrigal saw the home side take the lead at the halftime break by 13 pointas to 12. It was proving a very good game of rugby. This match under lights had attracted a great crowd and they were certainly all being enthralled by the quality and closeness of the match. Kariong regained the lead early in the second half but Terrigal were soon to take over on the scoreboard with some excellent tries. With the scores locked at 20 points apiece midway through the second half, the match was there for the taking. However it was Terrigal who finished the stronger towards the end and secured the victory. In the end the result proved a reasonably comfortable win for the home side but it took them quite awhile to gain control. Terrigal only scored 5 tries to 4 so that factor alone demonstrated the closeness of the match. Best players for Terrigal were lock Will McDonald, winger Dan Sargeant and flanker Sam Kenny. However it was the overall excellent performance of the team that was the dominant influence on the result. Best players for Kariong were fullback Jake Hubbard, No.8 Logan Campbell and lock CJ Fonoti.
The Razorbacks proved too strong for Woy Woy at Woy Woy Oval running out victors by 39 points to 5. The Razorbacks went to the halftime break leading by 17 points to 0 and even at that stage seemed to be in control. However Woy Woy were making them struggle for every point. Woy Woy had some very effective players and they were certainly not making it easy for the visitors. The second half saw the Razorbacks go on with it and they were able to post a further 22 points in the second half. Best for the Razorbacks were No.8 Rob Peden, who crossed for 3 individual tries, lock Josefa Biu and flanker Jarrod Grange. Best performers for the home side were lock Philip Shaw, who crossed for their try, No.8 Jazper Doak-Stride, and centre Junior Stowers.
It should be noted that The Lakes had a win on forfeit in their Premier 1 clash with Gosford. Gosford have not entered a team for 2021 season.
Women’s 10’s rugby continued with three excellent matches. Wins to Warnervale, Gosford/Woy Woy, and Terrigal saw the competition commence in what should prove an exciting season.
