REPORT :
The ‘Match of the Day’ at The Haven Oval saw Terrigal and Kariong play out a 17 all draw. It was obviously a tight struggle throughout. The match proved intense and hard fought for the entire 80 minutes. Terrigal started the match a little stronger and the home team opened up the scoring with a converted try midway through the first half to take a 7 points to nil lead. This score remained for much of the first half. Kariong did kick a penalty goal through halfback Scott Hanley late in the half to reduce the score to 7-3. This 7 points to 3 scoreline showed just how tight the match was, and that it was to be anyone’s match. Kariong scored their first try early in the first half to take the lead by 10 points to 7, but a penalty goal to the home side soon levelled the scores at 10 points apiece. The remainder of the half was so intense. Both teams crossed for a converted try, first Kariong, then Terrigal for the match to be all locked up at the fulltime whistle. Best players for Kariong were lock Taylor Mildren, centre Lachlan Peruch and prop Jackson Parkes. Best performers for Terrigal were No.8 Sam Kenny, flanker Noah Hughes and centre Harry Hughes. The result of this match simply shows that both these teams are definite Premiership candidates, and that the competition this year is very open.
Hornsby and Warnervale met at Pennants Hill Oval and the match resulted in a 35 points to 24 win to Warnervale. The match proved a neck to neck struggle for the first 40 minutes. Warnervale opened up the scoring and it was not that long before they had jumped to a 12 points to nil lead after crossing for 2 tries. However, Hornsby were not to be outdone. It was not long before the home side had levelled the scores at 12 all. Warnervale did cross for their third try late in the first half to make the halftime score Warnervale 17 Hornsby 12. It was in the early and mid stages of the second half that Warnervale skipped away on the scoreboard. They were able to post a further 18 points to the scoreboard before Hornsby was able to respond with their own points. It was Warnervale’s half of rugby. Hornsby did respond late in the half with two tries but it was all too late. Best players for Warnervale were No.8 Tevita Piukala and hooker Cameron McNamara, but the whole team had made their mark. Best for Hornsby were fullback Jim Hawkins, hooker Hosea Fotukava and centre Harry Fox.
The Lakes had their first match at home this season at Slade Park when they
defeated Gosford by 35 points to 20. They certainly took full advantage of this
home ground advantage. It was a pleasing win for the home side but they did not have
it all their own way. The Lakes did cross for three tries to one in the first half to take a
17 points to 10 lead at the halftime break. The home side played well in the first 40
minutes and deserved that lead. Gosford also played well and were certainly making
The Lakes earn their points. The Lakes confirmed their dominance in the early stages
of the second half when they were able to post a further 13 points to jump to a
winning 30 points to 10 lead. Gosford never stopped trying and were rewarded with
two tries late in the match. Best players for The Lakes were winger Travis Vawdon,
who crossed for 2 tries, winger Illese Cama and prop Zac McGuiness. Gosford were
best served by locks Mitch Cornwell and Tofua Fifta.
The Bay President’s Cup team were defeated by Avoca Beach at Heazlett Park, going down by 36 points to 0.
Women’s 10’s rugby continued with three matches. Terrigal confirmed their Premiership favouritism by defeating Kariong/Razorbacks by 28 points to 0, Avoca Beach defeated The Lakes by 29 points to 14, and Hornsby defeated Warnervale in a close one by 14 points to 10.
