REPORT :
The 2023 Central Coast Rugby Union season saw several exciting matches yesterday in Round 11 action in local rugby. The season has now well into the second half of the season and every match is so vital in the race to the Finals.
The Match of the Day at The Haven Oval saw Terrigal and the Razorbacks play out an enthralling game of rugby which saw Terrigal hang on for a 25 points to 23 victory. There was nothing in this match throughout the entire 80 minutes. The Razorbacks opened the scoring with a penalty goal to lead 3 nil but it was not long before Terrigal crossed for a converted try to take the lead by 7 points to nil. The match seesawed from one end of the field to the other in what was proving an exciting game of rugby. Terrigal went further ahead midway through the first half when they scored their second try and then close to halftime they crossed for their third try. This took the home team to a handy 19 points to 8 lead and this remained the halftime score. This 11 points advantage was a big break for the Terrigal side both in the context of the match and in what was proving a vey tight match. Whereas the first half was in Terrigal’s favour, the second half was in the favour of the Razorbacks. In fact, the Razorbacks outscored Terrigal by 15 points to 6 in the second half. The Razorbacks responded quickly at the start of the second half and it was not long before they had crossed for two tries to close the gap. In fact midway through the second half a penalty goal saw the Razorbacks take the lead by 23 points to 22 before Terrigal kicked a late penalty to take the victory. It was a most pleasing game of rugby between two teams who are definitely Premiership aspirants this year. Best players for Terrigal were props Antonio Cunha and Harry Gray, and centre Jayden Woolley while the best performers for the Razorbacks were centre Owen Turner, Sam Kearney and Luke Redhead. The win sees Terrigal leapfrog the Razorbacks into second position on the competition ladder in what is proving an intriguing race to the Premiership.
The Lakes hosted Hornsby at Slade Park and Hornsby were able to outlast The Lakes in winning by 17 points to 10. This was a close struggle throughout. Both teams had numerous opportunities to post points with play going from one end of the field to the other. However the first half was limited to a single try each with Hornsby going to the halftime break with a narrow lead of 7 points to 5. It was anybody’s match at that stage and the scoreline obviously showed the closeness of the contest at that stage. The Lakes went so close to scoring on a couple of further occasions but good Hornsby defence kept them out. The second half continued in much the same vein. Both teams scored a further try but it was Hornsby who still remained in the lead by 12 points to 10. This remained the score for quite awhile before Hornsby secured the match with a try a couple minutes before the end of the match. Hornsby did finish the stronger in the match. This was an important victory for Hornsby who still keep their slim hopes alive for the Finals. Best players for Hornsby were No.8 Hamish Perring, who crossed for 2 tries, centre Chris James, prop Aaron Duncan and five-eight Hunter Bird. The Lakes had several good players but none were better then No.8 Geoff Hiku, fullback Damien Lawson and centre Ashton Hutchinson-Walters.
Avoca Beach met Lake Macquarie at Boolaroo in a match which saw Avoca Beach posting a 53 points to 7 victory. The match commenced quite evenly with both teams giving their all. Lake Macquarie were very spirited and showed several phases of attack early on. However it was not long before Avoca Beach took control on the paddock and on the scoreboard. From the midway point of the first half they crossed for regular tries and by halftime had jumped to a 27 points to nil lead. They had crossed for 5 tries of which only one was converted. Lake Macquarie did cross their only try early in the second half to make the score 27-7 but it was Avoca Beach who still controlled proceedings and went on to post a further 26 points in the second half. The win sees Avoca Beach cement their spot at the top of the competition ladder while Lake Macquarie definitely showed glimpses of their definite improvement. Best players for Avoca Beach were locks Joel Delaney and Emile Thomas, No.8 Michael Hobden, and flanker Matt Hurd while the best efforts for Lake Macquarie were put in by flanker Mark De Vries, five-eight Brendan Holliday and centre Matt Youman.
Woy Woy and Gosford clashed at Woy Woy Oval in a contest that was totally one sided and saw Gosford run out winners by 114 points to nil. Gosford controlled this match from start to finish. They led by 55 points to nil at the halftime break and then posted a further 59 points in the second half to take the victory. Woy Woy had no answer to the Gosford attack. Gosford crossed for 18 tries, of which Nathan Brown posted 5 tries and 3 conversions for a total of 31 personal points. Best players for Gosford were five-eight Josh McGlynn, lock Mitch Parker, hooker Joel Wagner and centre Nathan Brown. Woy Woy were best served by centre Hugh Fotofili, hooker Tim Cook and No.8 Max Edwards.
The Women’s 10’s competition matches continued yesterday. Yesterday saw The Lakes, Terrigal and Avoca Beach all record important victories. A feature of the round was the great effort by Warnervale who played with greatly reduced numbers.
