REPORT :
In the Match of the Day at Ourimbah Rugby Park, the Razorbacks and The Lakes met. It was a damp, chilly day so wet weather rugby was the order of the day. The Razorbacks were able to get the win by 31 points to 7. The condition of the pitch made it extremely difficult to play any sort of running rugby. The Razorbacks got away to the better start and were first to score. Jarrod Grange crashed over for the first of his two tries in the match. The Razorbacks maintained their dominance for much of the first half and were able to go to halftime with a lead of 17 points to nil. This lead was basically a match winning lead with the conditions of the oval. Both teams tried to play concerted rugby for the entire match. It was the Razorbacks who adapted to the conditions the best and were able to further increase their lead well into the second half. The home side had jumped to a 31 points to nil lead late in the match before The Lakes were ale to cross for their first and only try. The Lakes went close to scoring on several occasions prior to this but great Razorback defence kept the visitors scoreless for much of the match. Best players for the Razorbacks five-eight Toby Carver, flanker Josefa Biu and No.8 Rob Peden. The Lakes were best served by locks James McCombie and Reihana Hemopo, fullback Travis Vawdon and flanker Wiremu Pirini.
Kariong was at home to Avoca Beach at Kariong Oval in what was another battle in the wet and mud. Kariong held on to win by 14 points to 7. This match was a real arm wrestle from start to finish. The conditions made things difficult but both teams stuck to the task for the entire 80 minutes. Kariong had the better of the opening stages and they were able to cross for two converted tries in the first quarter of the match. This was a very good start and it proved a very handy lead knowing the conditions of the day. This 14 nil scoreline was the halftime score. Kariong were to score no further points in the match while Avoca Beach were able to respond with the single converted try in the second half to make the final score 14 points to 7. Best players for the home side were locks Taylor Mildren and CJ Fonoti, prop Karl Verhoef and five-eight Josh McGlynn. Avoca Beach never stopped trying and the best players for them were veteran lock Emile Thomas, flanker Fionn Henderson-Foley and centre Mitch Jacob. The win sees Kariong jump to the top of the competition ladder in what has been a great year for the club.
Hornsby hosted Gosford at Pennant Hills Oval in what was another struggle from start to finish. Hornsby got the victory, running out winners by 17 points to nil. Both teams were even stevens in the first half and Hornsby only went to the halftime break leading by the single try. This 5 nil scoreline was indicative of the closeness of the first 40 minutes. The match was developing into a real arm wrestle. The second half continued in much the same vein but it was the Hornsby team who gradually gained increased control. They crossed for two tries in the second half, including one to debutant fullback Josh Woutersz. Gosford were unable to post any points to enable Hornsby to secure the victory. Best players for Hornsby were flanker Cooper Davenport, lock Aaron Duncan and prop Angus McQueen. Gosford gave it their all for the entire 80 minutes and they were best served by lock Tofua Fifita, No.8 Jackson Steinbeck and ever improving prop Ben Harvey.
The Bay fought hard in their President’s Cup game but went down to Terrigal Blue by 26 points to 7. Woy Woy had a close win over Warnervale, 26-19.
Women’s 10’s rugby continued with two hard fought matches. Close wins were recorded by Hornsby and The Lakes, in matches played in most trying conditions.
